STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematic) In order to expand the co-curricular activities of the science department of the high-school and elementary school of Anatolia, 14 volunteers have been requested to help with the science clubs and activities. This service site is available to students who are studying engineering, environmental sciences and natural sciences. There must be a keen interest and enthusiasm for science on the volunteers part and an ability work individually and with self-initiative. Below are projects suggested by the head of the high- school science department, Mr. Kalabokis. However, students are welcome to come up with more or different projects that they may have had at their own high school that can be implemented here at Anatolia. ARSIS

ARSIS is a non-governmental organization that deals with the social support of young people and defending the rights of youth. It was first founded in October 1992 and operates centers in Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos, Larissa and Karditsa.

The vision of ARSIS is to help develop a society which gives opportunities to all young people and upholds and defends the rights set out in the Greek and international laws for child protection.

ARSIS has a small center in down town Thessaloniki that offers tutoring, day care and support to refugee families, especially their children. 3-4 volunteers are needed to help run arts and crafts sessions for the children.

KEPEP

KEPEP is a recovery and rehabilitation center for children and young adults with special needs. Their mission is to provide care to children with severe physical and mental disabilities.

KEPEP began in 1974. The role of the institution 1974 to 1994 was to provide residential care and asylum status to individuals with special needs, and multiple disabilities. From 1994 onwards however, KEPEP has establishing itself as an open care center for people with special needs, they offer training programs, supports and awareness for family and friends as well as residential care.

10 Volunteers are needed in the afternoon from 5-7pm on week days and will be assigned to befriend and pay special attention to one particular child or young adult and help him/her get involved in some afternoon activities or else spend time reading books, playing music, drawing, playing puppet shows and generally doing creative activities with him/her.

ELEPAP

ELEPAP is a rehabilitation center for children and youth with special needs. They offer a whole range of treatments and accommodate a variety of needs to speed up the recovery and reestablishment of children with special needs. The center opened in 1969 and has two buildings with a total area of 3,000 sqm in a green area of 9 acres of olive groves in Pilea, right by the Anatolia campus.

3-4 volunteers are needed to support the children during creative workshops as well as other activities. Volunteers may also be asked to help with basic maintenance jobs like re-painting certain classrooms, upkeep of the gardens etc.

ASSOCIATION FOR PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME

The association for people with Down syndrome was founded in 1990 with the hard work of Mrs. Chariklias Chatzisevastou - Professor of Pediatrics. The families that are supported by the association are more than 430 families - a growing number - from all over Greece.

Two volunteers are needed at the association to help in the mornings with a workshop where the kids make wedding decorations which get sold to support the center (for this workshop volunteers need to be good at crafts). Volunteers may also help with morning classes where the kids get taught basic tasks on the computer or they may also be able to help with evening dance/coordination classes.

How to get there: How to get there: From Metropolitan Hotel take the 3, 5, 6, 33, or 39 bus to HANTH (ΧΑΝΘ). Take a right after you get off the bus and walk to the first intersection and cross the street to the right and veer to the right to walk down Nik. Germanou Street. You will see the bus stop on that street. From there you take Bus 12. You get off at the stop called Klimataria, which stops on a road called Αμφιπολεως (Amfipoleos). Next you turn right on the street called Δορυλαίου (Dorileu) and then left on the street called Αν. Χανδρινού (An. Xandrinou) and then right again on the streeτ called Καρανιβάλου (Karanivalu), the center is on Καρανιβάλου 31. You can also take a taxi to this site and share the cab fare it will be around 2euro/person.

ANATOLIA ELEMENTARY

Anatolia Elementary is the newest member of the Anatolia family, an organization with a long history and a strong presence in education for 125 years.

The mission of Anatolia Elementary is to help children reach their academic potential in the modern world of multi-dimensional knowledge. Through a child-centered and experiential approach, traditional ethics and values are nurtured while promoting proficiencies in the use of the English language and cutting-edge technology.

Beginning in kindergarten, English is taught 6 hours a week. 14 volunteers will be helping out in various areas for the English program of Anatolia from Kindergarten through Grade 6 students. Duties include working with the teachers in the regular English classes at all levels, but also in a variety of extracurricular activities that are conducted in English.

ANATOLIA U.S COLLEGE COUNSELING OFFICE

The American higher educational system is known throughout the world for its quality of faculty, facilities, research opportunities, extracurricular offerings, and general resources. The College Counseling office is focused on helping Anatolia students explore the option of study in the USA, define their academic interests while enhancing their personal profile, and assist them in preparing applications for their undergraduate study in the USA.

Two volunteers are needed to help provide services that will assist Greek high school students apply for American Colleges. Duties may include working on college databases, helping with college applications, putting together vital information for the office website as well as planning a college fair in order to introduce the high school students to the American College life and more.

ANATOLIA BILLINGUAL PROGRAM

The Bilingual Program is an innovative afternoon (after school) English learning program for children, ages 4-14 who have been exposed to English outside the classroom: •Who have lived abroad •Who have at least one English-speaking parent •Who have been exposed to English from a young age This ESL program nurtures emerging bilinguals to speak, read, and write English fluently and correctly.

The Bilingual Program is taught by dedicated bilingual teachers with local and international experience in small classes to ensure individual attention and in an English-speaking environment The entire lesson takes place in English. Teachers adapt the level of language to the age of the children. Lessons are designed for classroom interaction and hands-on experience to ensure maximum exposure to the language.

16 Volunteers are needed to assist in this afterschool program. Volunteers will be integrated into the lesson to further expose the pupils to native English speakers. The volunteers will give the pupils an opportunity to converse and interact with native speakers and they will also provide creative ideas for the lessons.

YOUTH CENTER IN EFKARPIA - TO ΣTEKI

To ΣΤΕΚΙ is a youth center in a welfare housing district in the west of the city that provides afterschool creative activities such as arts and crafts, photography as well as extra English language support. 3-4 Volunteers are need to run an English conversation workshop. The workshop is not to be set up as formal lessons but using fun means to get the youth to practice their English. For instance, through teaching them American games, songs and telling them about customs and traditions and the way of life in the U.S. Volunteers can also employ the use of drama and performing arts to teach English, the more creative the better.

How to get there: From Metropolitan hotel you take bus number 8 and get off at the stop called Kamara (The big arch). Take number 28 bus from the Kamara Arch that takes you to Efkarpia. The ride will be around 35 minutes and you need to get off at the stop called "άνοιξη" (aniksi), which means spring. The youth center is 10 meters from the bus stop.

4 SOUP KITCHENS

Around the city of Thessaloniki a variety of churches are providing 1-3 meals a day for people in need. The soup kitchens vary in location, size of kitchen and exact needs. However, volunteers are needed in the below soup kitchens to help the cooks prepare meals. The tasks are basic and include cutting vegetables, washing dishes, serving the food etc. The cooks rarely speak any Greek but they are very hospitable and will make volunteers feel very at home and give them an opportunity to practice speaking Greek.

CHRISTIAN AID CENTER

This is a Christian center formed by the evangelical community of Thessaloniki where services are offered to the poor and marginalized populations. They serve meals, provide clothing as well as personal hygiene services with a bath for women and men. The center is in the heart of Thessaloniki and volunteers are needed to help in the afternoon hours with serving snacks and meals and help keep the center clean. Six Volunteers are needed and its best if they are Christian or at least understand and respect Christian values and are open to working with the Christian community.

SAINT LUKE’S HOSPITAL

St. Luke's Hospital is a private medical institution of 278 beds, situated in the area of Panorama, Thessaloniki. It was built with funds from the USA and belongs to AMG International, a non-for-profit organization, which has its offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

St. Luke's Hospital is a general hospital covering almost all medical and surgical specialties. Even from the beginning, the hospital was privileged to include among its staff some of the best doctors of Thessaloniki and, more generally, of Northern Greece. Medical and nursing care is of the highest standard. All the departments have state of the art equipment, which is constantly renewed in order to keep up with the latest developments of medical technology.

The Hospital accepts patients covered by all public medical insurance organizations and has special contracts with private medical insurance companies.

Four volunteers will be helping in different words of the hospital, both shadowing the doctors and learning more about the medical profession but also helping out wherever possible. This site is only available to pre-med or nursing students.

Contact person: Mrs. Katsarka or Mrs. AgapidouTimes: the volunteering at this site will occur for two weeks on a daily basis so that volunteers can maximize the learning but also to be off more help. Volunteers will complete the 10 sessions in 2 weeks.

MUNICIPALITY OF THERMI

4 SITES

The Municipality of Thermi, under the Welfare & Preschool education act has been developing a variety of extra services for the community such as:

- Baby nurseries to help mothers with child and infant care - Early childhood pedagogical programs - Social Protection and Solidarity programs- Daycare centers- Entertainment and Recreation for Seniors (KAPH)- Support and of vulnerable populations- Support for people with disabilities and special needs

The Municipality has provided 4 service sites in which NUin students will be involved in volunteering during afternoon hours 5pm onwards.

1. Conversational English Workshops for High School students that are preparing for English Language exams at Lower, Advance or Proficiency levels. The workshops will be taking place at the primary school in Thermi. It is anticipated that around 20 high school pupils will be attending. 3 Volunteers will be needed at this site.

2. Afterschool Basketball Club: 3 Volunteers who are trained in basketball will form an afterschool basketball club for primary and possibly secondary school students.

3. Assisting at the Community Grocery Shop which provides food and household supplies for families on welfare. One day per week the Community Grocery Shop remains open during the hours of 14:00 to 20:00, 3 volunteers will be helping to pack bags of food and detergents that will be given to families in need.

4. Helping at the day care center for children with special needs. The ΚΔΑΠ-ΜΕΑ offers creative activities for young people with mental or physical disabilities. Volunteers will help the carers in keeping the center clean, helping feed the children as well as helping out with the IT session and gymnastics sessions.

MUNICIPALITY OF PANORAMA

4 SITES

The Municipality of Panorama would like to offer Conversational English Workshops for primary and secondary school students in four areas that are under the Municipalities jurisdiction. The workshops are to be informal but prepared in advance and should focus mainly on conversing in English. This is of special interest to High School students that are preparing for English Language exams at Lower, Advance or Proficiency levels. The workshops will be taking place. It is anticipated that around 15-30 pupils will be attending each workshop. The 4 workshop will be similar in format but in different areas.

GREEK PUBLIC SCHOOLS

7 Schools

1. The 3rd Primary School of Stavroupoli a. Two volunteers that are good at arts and crafts are needed in

the afternoons (after 4pm) to help re-decorate and transform the interior of the school with murals, stencils and other decorations as well as make crafts with the children using recycled goods. The creations will be presented at the end of the project with music dance and presentations.

2. The 25th Primary School of Evosmosa. 2-3 volunteers who are interested in education, literature or

drama to help with a new afternoon story-telling workshop that they have set up. Stories will not only be read but they will also be acted out and they will be combined with games, dance and more. Volunteers will also be asked to find stories from their own countries to share with the kids.

3. The 6th International Primary School of Evosmos a. 2-3 volunteers are needed who are interested in education,

children’s rights as well as must and arts, to help run a workshop I English on ‘Learning about my rights’. This workshop will entail helping the children learn more about their rights and responsibilities in a community through stories, open discussions, arts and crafts as well as music and song. This workshop will take place in the morning hours, from 8am-10pm.

4. The 7th School of Stavroupoli a. This school is piloting a project called ‘art helps me express

myself’ which aims to help children develop different means of self- expression. The teachers have put together a schedule of ‘themes’ for 10 weeks and each weak the pupils will discuss a different emotion (like fear, loneliness, joy etc) in combination

with different art forms (sculpting, drawing, film etc). Artistically inclined volunteers are needed to prepare the ‘arts and crafts’ projects for each weak. Volunteers must have a sincere interest in different art forms and in working with children. Three volunteers are needed in total and the workshop will take place in the afternoons.

5. The 3rd International School of Menemeni a. This school would like to continue a project that began with NUin

volunteers last year. It has a very high percentage of Roma and International children whose first language is not Greek. The project involves putting together a lexicon that has important words in English, Greek, Roma as well as drawings, in order to help the international students integrate better and give them a project that is meaningful to them. 3 volunteers are needed, in the morning hours (8am-10am) to help put this lexicon together with the children.

6. The 4th School of Polixnia. This school would like to set up an English Book Reading Club

and needs 3 volunteers to help pick appropriate books from the Eleftheriadis library at Anatolia and ready the stories in combination with music, dance, art or theatre to make the stories more vivid and exciting for the students. Volunteers must have an interest in working with young children and enjoy reading.

7. 1st School of Langada has not decided 100% on their project yet, most possibly they want to run English language workshops for their teachers. This will be a project working with adults rather than children. 3 Volunteers will be needed

Locals Like: This project involves interviewing locals around Thessaloniki, finding people who are interesting to interview (such as museum curators, university students, artists etc.) and asking them some basic questions about what they love in Thessaloniki, what they would recommend to a tourist etc. This interview will then be edited and placed on-line as a great reference for tourists on ‘what to do’ in Thessaloniki during their visit according to the locals.

Tourist Reports: This project involves interviewing tourists in Thessaloniki and finding out why they decided to come to Thessaloniki, what they thought about Thessaloniki before arriving and generally getting their impressions and suggestions. These videos will be a great service to all the tourist and travel offices in Thessaloniki.

Guest Bloggers: This project involves going to events that are announced in the city like concerts, exhibitions, street parades etc and writing reviews about them as guest bloggers on the website.
