    Ralph Liguori, that time-tested wa rhorse who seemed tomake acareer out ofmissing th e lndy 500 an d crashingheavily on television, is th e focus of thislatest chapter in th e history of Americanpopulism. As the sport's longest-suffering snakebite victim. Liguori ha sfo r years heen a sentimental people'schoice down in oval racing's dustybottomlands.Now that he is almo st 50 year s old andat the twilight of hi s career. it would havebeen safe to ass up e that Liguori wasn'tgoing to do much about his status asIndy's oldest liv ing rookie (in terms ofvears o f senioritv).
