APSA 2015 Presidential UpdateDear APSA members, colleagues, and friends, Welcome to APSA’s 11th Annual Meeting! We are thrilled that you are joining us for what will surely be an exciting and engaging meeting, filled with great speakers, informative panels, and plentiful networking and social opportunities. This meeting is a reflection of the prominent role that young physician-scientists play in medicine and science. The Annual Meeting is also a reflection of the hard work and dedication that APSA leaders have put in over the last year to provide benefits for our members, advance the training of physician-scientists, and plan for this meeting. In this letter, I will outline just a few of the accomplishments of each of our committees. Our Events Committee, led by Dan DelloStritto (who also serves as president-elect), has put in tireless hours in planning this meeting. The committee recruited high profile speakers, brought in dozens of established physician-scientists to serve as mentors and panelists, and helped provide over thirty travel awards. They have attended to every last detail to ensure that this meeting is productive and goes without a hitch. The committee also helped put on five Regional Meetings this past fall, which included one on the West Coast for the first time since 2007. In aggregate, these Regional Meetings attracted over 600 attendees! A goal of APSA has always been to keep our membership dues low. To help support our operations, our Fundraising Committee (led by Hsin-Pin Lin) has helped to fundraise and secure over $100,000 in grants from companies, non-profit organizations, specialty societies, and the NIH. I want to also take this opportunity to thank our many sponsors (listed on page 1 of this booklet). The generous contributions reflect our sponsors’ belief in the importance of physician-scientists. The core of APSA has always been its members. The membership committee, under Peter Mittwede, has done tremendous work over the past year in improving and increasing the benefits we provide. Over the past year, we held online interactive sessions with mentors including Francis Collins, David Ginsburg, and Mukesh Jain, among many others. We initiated a Local Chapters Initiative that helped APSA spread at local medical schools and provided lunch grants to many of these local chapters. We also started a mentorship program, pairing up over 30 undergraduates with current MD/PhD students. Our Partnerships Committee under Josh Cohen and Stephanie Jackson has been engaging many specialty society partners to provide additional benefits to our members. These include establishing travel awards to our Annual Meeting and travel awards to the specialty society meetings, recruiting mentors for our Interest Group breakfast on Sunday morning, and providing four of the keynote speakers for this meeting. New specialty society partners this year include the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American College of Rheumatology (ACR), and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). A mission of APSA has always been to advocate for its members and on behalf of the physician-scientist community as a whole. Under Jennifer Kwan, the Policy Committee has engaged in a number of initiatives toward this cause. The committee has conducted a large national survey of MD/PhD students to understand the motivations for students to pursue this track and the reasons for attrition along the physician-scientist pipeline. A manuscript outlining the results of this survey is in preparation for submission. The committee also partnered with the Association for Clinical and Translational Science (ACTS) in advocating on Capitol Hill on behalf of physician-scientists. This Annual Meeting will also feature a Policy Panel that will feature Dr. Francis Collins as a panelist. Our Public Relations committee, led by Stephanie Brosius, has done wonderful work this year in a variety of areas. Our social media presence has grown tremendously on Facebook and Twitter. The committee has retooled our marketing campaign for reaching out to sponsors, which has helped greatly in our fundraising efforts. The committee also used their creativity and professional-level design skills to put together our newsletters, as well as this Annual Meeting program. Alex Adami, chair of the technology committee, is the backbone of this organization. He has valiantly managed all of the organization’s technology needs over the last few years, making sure our website runs smoothly, maintaining our membership database, and managing the A/V at the Annual Meeting, and doing many of the “behind the scenes” tasks that keep this organization running. He has taken on a Herculean task, one that is often under-recognized. I also want to thank Aaron Adair and the Sherwood Group for their work in managing our organization. The team at Sherwood has worked tirelessly over the last few years to help grow our organization, and I can confidently say that we would not be where we are today without them. They have demonstrated dedication, integrity, and professionalism in helping to manage APSA—I cannot express enough gratitude for everything the Sherwood Group has done. Beginning on May 1st, we will be transitioning to our new management group, McKenna Management and are assured they will help to continue to grow APSA. I have outlined just a small fraction of the organization’s accomplishments over the past year. The dedicated members of the Executive Council have done tremendous things in all aspects of our organization, and I hope this Annual Meeting will be a showcase of their efforts. I hope you enjoy the Annual Meeting!

Best,

Michael Guo

APSA 2015 Annual Meeting Committee Welcome

Colleagues, Mentors, and Friends,

On behalf of the 2015 APSA Events Committee, welcome to the 11th Annual Meeting of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA). We are excited to once again hold this meeting in partnership with the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians (ASCI/AAP) joint annual meeting, and the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research and the Midwestern Section of the American Federation for Medical Research CSCTR/MWAFMR meetings.

Over the past 11 years this meeting has strived to bring unique opportunities to physician-scientists trainees to help expand networking opportunities, educational experiences and the chance to share your work in a highly interactive manner. This year our business meeting has put emphasis on the expansion of our Local Chapter initiatives. To further grow APSA outreach, we know that it starts with our local chapters and we wanted to recognize those chapters that have continuously done an excellent job representing APSA.

The joint APSA/ASCI/AAP meeting described in this booklet is held at the Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park. The CSCTR/MWAFMR meeting, which all APSA registrants are welcome to attend, is held at the Hotel Chicago (333 N Dearborn Street), within walking distance from the Fairmont from Thursday the 23th until Friday the 24th -- a full schedule of events can be found at www.cscr.com/am15. Furthermore, there is a great social outing with representatives of this society on Thursday at Bar Louie (335 N Dearborn Street). This has been a tradition for the last two years and if you are too late to participate this year make sure to mark it in your calendar next year!

Overall, the entire Events Committee has put a program together with the goals that all attendees can take advantage of the exceptional educational experiences. We focused on Keynote address with a broad area of research interests but most importantly a long history of excellent mentorship. We have invited panelists to share their expertise in question and answer sessions; finally, we have spent time recruiting mentors for you to speak with in a wide array of research/clinical interests. We hope that you use these chances to get to know your colleagues and future mentors well. On behalf of the Events committee I want to welcome you to the APSA 11th Annual meeting!

Sincerely,

Daniel DelloStritto

He now serves as Vice Chair of Research in emergency medicine and a professor of physiology. Jeffrey Kline studies blood clots, the people they affect, and the providers who care for those people. His diagnostic research interests focus on human affect analysis, pretest probability and novel breath-based instruments to reduce medical imaging. His human treatment research includes randomized trials of fibrinolysis and inhaled nitric oxide to reduce heart damage from blood clots in the lungs. He derived and validated a decision rule to help emergency physicians reduce unnecessary diagnostic tests for low-risk patients with symptoms of blood clots in the lungs. His current work focuses on using the human face as a diagnostic instrument to further help doctors make smart decisions about diagnostic testing for blood clots. His laboratory work focuses on mechanisms and treatment of acute pulmonary hypertension from pulmonary embolism, animal models of pulmonary embolism, and a nanoparticle-delivered enzyme, plasmin to promote clot lysis without increasing risk. He helped set up an advanced treatment program to treat patients with severe PE in the hospital, and he also created and runs a clinic specifically to allow patients diagnosed with blood clots in the emergency department to treat themselves at home, rather than in the hospital.

Epithelial cells perform the absorptive and secretory functions of an organism and these activities frequently require the generation of tremendous ionic, electrical and pressure gradients. These gradients are achieved by the unique structural and functional organization of epithelial plasma membranes. He has studied how this organization is achieved by examining processes that disrupt the polarized features of epithelial. Ischemic injury has been shown to cause profound derangements in epithelial organization and this is an area of intensive investigation in my laboratory. A second disease process that has been shown to disrupt the polarized phenotype of epithelial cells is autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Protein sorting defects and Golgi complex dysfunction have been described in epithelial cells derived from ADPKD kidneys. A gene responsible for this disease has recently been identified and has been called PKD1. Computer analysis of the PKD1 gene sequence suggests that the gene product is a transmembrane protein which interacts with the extracellular matrix. However, a definitive function for the PKD1 gene product has not been discovered. His lab employs a variety of biochemical, molecular and cell biology methods to address these scientific questions.
