Panel Discussion “Transformation of Electric Vehicles with Normal Vehicles”
12.02.2020
A panel discussion was held on 12 th February 2020 at
6.00 pm in IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre auditorium. The topic of
the day was “Transformation of Electric Vehicles with Normal
Vehicles”. Er. R Ramdoss FIE, Chairman, IE(I), TNSC welcomed
the gathering and introduced the guest speakers
Dr J Balamurugan, Committee Member, Electrical Engineering
Division, IEI-TNSC, Dr P S Kumar, Managing Director,
ETAsmart Pvt. Ltd., Er S Selvakumar, CEO, Power Projects, Dr
E Bhaskaran, Joint Director, Department of Industries and
Commerce, Government of Tamil Nadu and Er P S Praveen,
Blockchain Head, Chennai.
Dr. J Balamururgan has started the event addressing why this
theme has been selected. Er S Selvakumar has talked about the need
of hour to convert the conventional vehicles to Electric Vehicles
and highlighted the paths to be travelled before we reach the goal.
He has touched the base of just not the advantage of EV but also
the challenges to be faced during the transformation. He has stressed
the Two-wheeler, Three Wheeler, Charging Infrastructure, Life of
Battery, Effect of Temperature on Battery etc., He has presented few
case studies and Statistics.
In Dr PS Kumar's opinion EV Vehicles are only one of the
NEV Vehicles - New Energy Vehicles which are transforming the
automotive industry. NEV Vehicles consists Electric Vehicle,
Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle, Fuel Cell Vehicles
etc. Without high safety system like Pyrofuse these electric vehicles
will not assure the buyers higher safety standards. Charging -
Different types of Charging sockets, Charging Systems,
Rechargeable Batteries and Convenience of Charging are another
barrier the EV Vehicles needs to overcome. EV Vehicles should
ensure the buyers the lower operating cost and longer life of the
batteries. People in India will migrate to NEV In a phased manner
provided the cost economics are justified.
Er P S Praveen pointed out that India has missed out on first
two opportunities of going green that is ethanol and jatropha which
was supposed to be used by the Railways and diesel vehicles
.Sugarcane producers are now offering the ethanol as a by product
to various alcohol Industries but they are not providing it for vehicle
addition of 20% in petrol . It's been legal for the last four five years
but there is a lot of resistance in implementing this ethanol process
in the petrochemical industry and the government is also taking it
very easy on this particular subject.
We know the green aspect of EV, but there is lot of
standardization in terms of charging interfaces that needs to be
looked into because if a person has the first generation charging
interface he is not able to charge into the modern are the modified
charging interfaces of II and III generation. Charging as a business
also has to be seen as an enabler for this EV Revolution as without
the charging stations available in public and long distance Highways
EV may not be successful at all. The automobile companies are
looking for more policy support from the government in terms of
bringing EV Technology into India and they are looking at tax
breaks and land allotment for EV launch in India. But I am not sure
if the new policies which are released are attracting the auto sector
IOT is also playing a big role in the EV sector because it will
help communication between vehicles and from the vehicle to the
manufacturer and from the manufacturer to the service companies
to support EV vehicles on big platforms which are driven by AI.
So that is a very important advantage of EV because they can be
managed using IOT remotely.
Dr.E.Bhaskaran talked about Electrical Vehicle Manufacturing
Entrepreneurs need 10 STEPS to start their industry.

Talk on “Experiences in Grid Operation with Integration of Renewable Power”
26.02.2020
A lecture meeting was held on 26th February 2020 at 6.00 pm in
IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre auditorium. The topic of the day was
“Experiences in Grid Operation with Integration of Renewable Power”.
Er. R Ramdoss FIE, Chairman, IE(I), TNSC welcomed the gathering
and introduced the guest speakers Er S Selvakumar, CEO, Power
Projects, Chennai, Er S Senthilkumar, AEE/ATC, O/o. SE/LD&GO,
TANTRANSCO, Chennai, Er Y Srinath, Assistant Director, National
Institute of Wind Energy. Er Babu Sidramappa More FIE, Chairman,
IEI Kalaburagi Local Centre was participated in the lecture meeting as
a Special Guest.
Er Y Srinath has talked that the penetration of wind generation
(infirm power) is increasing day by day on interconnected power
systems; hence system operators are facing increased levels of
variability and uncertain power in the grid. The Indian wind industry
/ utility faces several hurdles including transmission, scheduling and
forecasting problems, resulting in wind turbines being backed down
from the grid because grid mangers could not accurately predict the
wind power to be accommodated in the grid.
Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA) highlighted that in the
state of Tamil Nadu, 2-3 billion units of electricity were lost during
the year 2013 and 2014 because of wind farm downtime (500-1000
Crore Revenue loss for Producers) which is mainly due to non-
availability of proper forecasting mechanism to predict wind power
generation. The integration of increasing amounts of wind into
generation mix requires new tools and practices to ensure the continued
reliable operation of the grid. In order to utilize the maximum of wind
energy resources and to increase the penetration and evacuation of wind
power generation, and for managing the grid effectively an accurate
wind power forecasting technique is needed.
In this regard, NIWE has developed an Indigenous wind power-
forecasting model with the help of high-resolution NWP model data
from the NCMRWF and ISRO-SAC. NIWE has established an
automated system to predict the wind power up to 7 days ahead so as
to support all the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) in the country
to evacuate wind power / manage the grid effectively and efficiently.
NIWE has developed a dedicated forecasting dashboard for viewing
the Day-ahead wind power schedule and intraday wind power schedule.
Any public can view the aggregated forecast for the next 7 days using
NIWE's Wind Power Forecasting dashboard by signing in as a guest
user. The respective SLDCs are provided with username and password
to view the forecast, actuals and Error analysis report. In addition to
that, NIWE is also sharing the forecast results to SLDCs through FTP,
E-mail and WhatsApp.
Major achievements
• The forecasting project viz, "Wind Power Forecasting services for
the Whole State of Tamil Nadu" has been awarded National
Awards for eGovernance 2018-2019(GOLD) under Category-IV
"Outstanding research on Citizen Centric Services by Academic
Research Institutions".
• The same wind power forecasting project has also been awarded
SKOCH Smart Technology award 2015.
• In Tamil Nadu, due to NIWE's forecast, Evacuation has been
improved from 80 Million Units to 100+ Million Units in a day
this would reduce the usage of fossil fuel and shall increase the
usage of renewable energy resources optimally and sustain a
secure energy policy for India.
• The NIWE's forecast is largest single regional forecast with 22.1
GW (65%) of Wind across India is operational.
• Wind power forecasts increases the reliability and stability of
power systems by reducing operating reserve shortfalls.
Er.S.Senthilkumar briefed about the Presentation of Integration
of Renewable Energy. Tamil Nadu demand of around 15000 - 16500
MW and Installed capacity of 32,000 MW in conventional and non-
conventional generation is being handled with the existing State Load
Despatch Center (SLDC) i.e. One MLDC and three Sub - LDCs.
Integration of Renewable power into the grid :- The Renewable
Power from Wind/Solar is around 13,000 MW and a monitoring and
scheduling & forecasting is difficult in the existing system conditions
and more additional developments and infrastructure is essential for
load despatch centres.
The Central Government is planning to implement,
• Out of 175 GW, 60 GW Rooftop Solar Plant to be proposed to
establish in Decentralised environment.
• Electric Vehicles/Hybrid Electric Vehicles in India by 2020/2030
with the demand around 1000 - 5000 MW. Before on
implementation lot of requirement for infrastructure development
and monitoring is highly essential for State/Sub-Load Despatch
Centres and Area Control Centres in Grid Management.
This SLDC ensures integrated operation of the power system. It
is responsible for optimum scheduling and dispatch of electricity within
the state in accordance with the contracts entered into with the licensees
or the generation companies operating in that state.
It monitors grid operation, exercises supervision and control over
the inter-state transmission system and is responsible for carrying out
real-time operation for grid control and dispatch of electricity within
the state through secure and economic operation of the state grid in
accordance with the grid standards and state grid code.In future
prospects, Renewable power play a major role in the power system.
Finally S Selvakumar, Head - Engineering and Design has talked
about "Role of Energy Storage and Load Dispatch Center in Converting
175 GW RE dream to Reality". He has touched the based on present
installed capacity, Renewable Penetration, Renewable Contribution,
Transmission Network Strength etc.
In his talk he has highlighted the challenges in increased
renewable penetration and mitigation measures required to ensure the
enhanced renewable penetration. He has also touched the base on
Blackout in UK in August 2019. He has stressed significance of Load
forecasting, Renewable Forecasting and Energy Storage in converting
the 175 GW Renewable Penetration to Grid. He has also touched the
challenges faced by load dispatch centres while running with increased
renewables.
Er R Ramdoss, Chairman, IE(I),TNSC honoured the guest
speakers with a gift. Er P Gomathi Nayagam, MIE, Honorary
