Autumn Learning Adventure: Reading
Objectives for our READING Learning Adventure 2017 Learn about famous authors & their genres.
Each child in the school to write an effective book review of their favourite book that which does more than simply retell the story.
Children take part in before and after evaluations to see how their skills have improved. o Before/Pre Task – children to write review of their favourite book without being given any
support or guidance. o After/End of Week – children to rewrite review using the skills they have been taught.
Principles of a Learning Adventure
We will focus on quality of learning.
We seek to provide enriching, creative and fun activities.
We ensure that learning is inclusive and accessible to all pupils.
The whole school focus will be introduced in an assembly at the outset and celebrated at the end.
Why did we choose this for our Learning Adventure?
Reading is a key priority from our school development plan 2017-18
Monitoring reading records showed us that we wanted to increase the quantity and quality of responses per week from children in their reading records.
What did the children do over the Learning Adventure? By the end of the week, children engaged in these activities….
1. Were shown/shared at least three different genres of books (in assemblies). 2. Learned about how to write a high quality book review (age appropriate). 3. Heard different stories and reviews from teachers across the school.
1. On Monday 6th Nov we had a whole school assembly to launch the week, led by HT, DHT &
AHT. The focus was on sharing a range of genres of stories with the children. 2. On Tuesday 7th Nov, in guided reading session, teachers taught children how to how to write
high quality review by going through key features that could be/need to be mentioned. We discussed with children…
Summary of the plot in one sentence?
Characterisation and readers response to them?
Setting/s of story?
Theme of book/genre?
The main dilemma and resolution of the story?
Key language/literary devices such as use descriptive language, figurative language, humorous language, alliteration, personification and onomatopoeia (age approp.)
3. On Weds 8th Nov, in assembly time, 10.05 to 10.25, teachers visited TWO other classrooms and read a page or two from a book of their own choice and shared with the class their review of that book which highlighted elements of the bullet points above. Each class saw two different teachers
4. On Thurs 9th Nov, we continued with the teaching from Tuesday. 5. On Friday 10th Nov, children completed their own book review using the skills they had been
shown and compared this to the entries in their reading records. We also celebrated the Learning Adventure in achievement assembly with special certificates for STAR READERS OF THE WEEK to highlight reading for pleasure!
Over the next pages you can see a range of pupil outcomes from across the school. You can see that the children were able to write an effective book review that did
more than simple retell the story. They identified a range of ways the books appealed to them! If you are a parent, they can help you to see the kind of comments that are
helpful to put into the reading record each week as part of homework tasks.
