SUMMARY

From September 5 to 16, 1997, a heavy mineral sampling program was completed on the Feder Claim Group, Wawa, Ontario. A total of 92 sites were sampled. At each site, a 15 - 20 kg bulk sample was obtained for heavy mineral analysis, and a 250 gm representative sample was taken for future reference and geochemical analysis.

The results of this program have been reported previously (Thomas, 1997). Apart from the kimberlite indicator minerals that were found, two samples were found to contain gold grains and six samples were found to contain pyrite or goethite- limonite after pyrite. In order to evaluate the significance of the pyrite bearing samples on the Feder Northern Claim Group, the 250 gm representative samples were submitted for geochemical analysis. Three samples were found to contain detectable quantities of gold with a maximum of 6 ppb; one of these was found to contain elevated quantities of copper. Three samples contained anomalous quantities of silver. None of the Co, Cr, Ni contents of any samples would indicate the presence of ultramafic intrusives.

1 INTRODUCTION

The 1996 field program conducted on the Robert Arend property comprised a heavy mineral sampling program aimed at evaluating specific targets and at generally appraising the diamond and gold potential of the claims. Similar techniques have been shown by Morris et al ( 1994) to identify areas of kimberlite emplacement in the Wawa area. R. D. Thomas and Associates was contacted to carry out this program. The field work was carried out between September 5 and 16, 1997 with a total of 92 samples being taken. The sample acquisition procedure, laboratory techniques and results are discussed in Thomas (1997).

Two samples collected during this program contained gold grains. Six other samples were reported to contain pyrite or hematite (or goethite/limonite) after pyrite in the heavy mineral concentrates. As a test to determine if there is gold associated with this pyrite, the samples from the northern group of claims was analysed geochemically for Au + 47 elements. This report outlines and discusses the results that were obtained. The geochemical results are presented in the appendices; the field notes and heavy mineral analytical results were previously reported in Thomas (1997).

2 LOCATION AND ACCESS

The property is located (Figure 1) seven kilometres east of Wawa on NTS map sheet 42C/2 and on Ontario Base Maps 2016 6700 53200 and 2016 6700 53100. The centre of the claim group is located at latitude 84" 41.5' N longitude 840 03' W (UTM zone 16 5320300mN 674700mE). Two claims lie within Chabanel Geographic Township and two claims lie within McMurray Geographic Township. Chabanel and McMurray Geographic Townships are incorporated within the Municipality of Michipicoten Township.

Access to the claims is from Highway 101 from Wawa which crosses through the northwest part of the claims.

3 GEOGRAPHIC SETTING

The property lies to the southeast of Wawa Lake (Figure 1) in an area of high, steep sided hills which reach a maximum altitude of 432 m. The altitude of Wawa Lake is 287 m.

The claims are drained by small streams that flow into Wawa Lake. Wawa Lake drains southwesterly via Wawa Creek into the Michipicoten River and thence into Lake Superior. Wawa Lake underlies the north westernmost corners of the claims 1174531 and 1174532. Several small lakes, generally 200 m to 400 m in length, lie within the southernmost claims. Some appear to be related to the activity of beavers, however the others may be structurally controlled.

4 REGIONAL GEOLOGY

4.1 Precambrian Geology

The regional geology has been mapped by Rupert (1975, 1979) and Sage et al. (1982), and Sage (1988 and 1993) among others. A compendium of the regional geology has been written by Sage (1994). The geology of the Wawa Subprovince is presented in Williams, et a/(1991).

The property lies within the Michipicoten Greenstone Belt of the Wawa Subprovince of the Superior Province. The Michipicoten Greenstone Belt has been subjected to considerable study, dating back to 1847 (Logan, 1847), because of its economic significance with respect to the many gold and siderite iron mines that have been developed. Three cycles of volcanism have been outlined by Sage (1986), which, from oldest to youngest are: the Hawk Assemblage, the Wawa Assemblage and the Catfish Assemblage. The claim group is underlain by the Wawa Assemblage

The lower part of the Wawa Assemblage is composed of massive and pillowed magnesium- and iron-rich tholeiitic volcanic rocks. These are overlain by polymictic breccia and epiclastic tuff of intermediate composition with thin beds of chert, pyrite, and graphite that form the middle part of the unit. The upper part of the Wawa Assemblage comprises calc-alkalic intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks consisting of tuff, quartz-feldspar crystal tuff, lapilli tuff, oligomictic and polymictic breccia and rare spherulitic flows. The Wawa Assemblage is capped by 100 -150 m section of iron formation which is the ore rock for the Wawa Iron Mines. The Jubilee Stock, which lies to the west of the claims, is believed to be comagmatic with the intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks of the Wawa Assemblage. The Wawa Assemblage has been deformed into major folds; it is also sheared along its contacts. Details of the geology of the claims, as mapped by Archibald (1996), are presented in Figure 2.

4.2 Quaternary Geology

The Quaternary geology of the area has been mapped in detail by Morris (1990, 1992) and is described on a province-wide scale by Barnett (1992). The details of the post-glacial history of the Lake Superior Basin is presented in Farrand and Drexler(1985).

In general, the glacial deposits present in the Wawa area were deposited during the last glacial event which ended at approximately 9 500 yrs BP (Phillips and Fralick, 1994). This event, the Marquette Readvance, started at approximately 10 000 BP, and filled the Lake Superior basin reaching into northern Michigan. The glacial till that lies throughout the Wawa area was laid down during both this advance and the subsequent deglaciation. This till is a silt till, in places becoming a sand till, generally with less than 1007o gravel-sized material. It is generally less than 2 m thick and lies on bedrock. In thicker sections it is observed to be hard and very compact. Ice flow directions, recorded from striae in the region indicate that the initial flow was toward the southwest (225T) varying between 165T and 2630T. During the retreat phase,

the ice flow direction became progressively more westerly 2660 21 0T as the ice thinned and the local topography had more influence on the ice dynamics (Morris et a/., 1994). In valleys, the glacial deposits are commonly overlain by glaciofluvial sands and gravels deposited in front of the melting icesheet. Such deposits are present along the Firesand River Valley.

The ice front was in contact with glacial lake Minong during its retreat from the Lake Superior Basin. This lake reached a maximum altitude of approximately 311 m, although there is some evidence that flood discharges from Lake Agassiz may have resulted in short lived lake level increases of up to 20 m (Phillips and Fralick, 1994). As such, the floor of the Firesand River valley and the terrain adjacent to Wawa Lake may have been covered by Lake Minong, at which time, some lacustrine materials, probably coarse-grained, may have been deposited. Subsequent to the draining of Lake Minong, geological activity would include general subaerial erosion of the lands surface, incision of some of the streams and rivers, and the deposition of organic (peat) deposits in depressions.

6 PREVIOUS WORK

6.1 Exploration by Others

6.1.1 General

Wawa has been a centre of mineral exploration and mining for a century. Gold was discovered on the shores of Lake Wawa in 1897 and the ensuing gold rush created the Michipicoten Mining Division with the first government Mining Office in Ontario being established in Wawa shortly thereafter. With the rapid increase in population as a result of the gold discovery, the town site was surveyed and registered as Wawa City in 1899. In 1898, Ben Boyer discovered iron ore near Wawa. This was eventually developed into the first, and last, iron mine in Ontario and the only underground iron mine in Canada. The first iron mines, Helen, Magpie and Moose Mountain Mines along with a few smaller ones, produced iron from the Wawa area from 1904 to 1926. After a period of about 13 years when there was very little iron produced because of cheap ore from the USA, iron production recommenced from the Helen and George W. Macleod mines by Algoma Ore Division on the outskirts of Wawa. The George W. Macleod mine is presently active and has reserves for at least the next 20 years.

In the 1920's, gold exploration resumed and culminated with the opening of fifteen mines including the Grace, Jubilee, Minto, Darwin and Parkhill. The latest gold exploration activity occurred as a result of the major discovery and development of the Hemlo deposit, some 100 km to the northwest of Wawa. As a result several mines were opened in the late 1980's including the Magino, Kremzar and Magnacon mines but most have since closed. The main gold mine presently operating in the Wawa area is the Eagle River mine owned by River Gold Mines Ltd. It has an annual production of S40,000 ounces. Production of ore from the Magnacon Mine has recently recommenced and is being processed by River Gold Mines.

6.1.2 Diamond exploration

Diamond exploration in the Wawa area started with the discovery of diamonds in the gravels of a point bar of the Dead River south of Wawa by C. Clement in the summer of 1991. Two of the three diamonds that were discovered were verified by the Royal Ontario Museum, Department of Mineralogy, and were described as industrial grade stones of 1.05 and 1.13 carats.

Follow-up work by the Ontario Geological Survey consisted of a regional stream sediment sampling program and two detailed sampling programs in which a total of 257 samples were taken (Morris, et a /, 1994). This program discovered an abundance of kimberlite indicator minerals in the streams south of Wawa and along the Michipicoten River to the south of Wawa. Several samples of modern alluvium were collected along the Firesand River (Wad56 - Wad62) and in the general vicinity of the claims (Wad79). Sample Wad58 taken on the Firesand River in the southern part of claiml 10143 was found to contain one grain each of ilmenite and chromite. Sample Wad56, taken on the Firesand River where it crosses Highway 101 also contained one grain of ilmenite. Sample Wad79, taken along Leroy Lake south of the claims,

Page 11: RPT ON GEOCHEM ANALYSES OF TILL SAMPLES FEDER N …...Gold was discovered on the shores of Lake Wawa in 1897 and the ensuing gold rush created the Michipicoten Mining Division with

contained 18 gold grains. These gold grains presumably were derived from further up the drainage system, or possibly the Golden Reed Mine.

Several companies have been involved in diamond exploration in the past few years. The most recent announcements from some of these companies confirm the presence of kimberlites and diamonds in the Wawa area. Currie Rose Resources Inc. have found up to nine kimberlitic bodies near Wawa. Canabrava Diamond Corporation have recently announce finding two 'kimberlite1 pipes near Wawa. Spider Resources Inc. have recently announced finding diamonds in several mafic (lamprophyric) dikes along the Trans-Canada Highway 20 km north of Wawa.

6.2 Present Project

Two campaigns of exploration have been conducted by Robert Arend Ltd. The first, in August and October, 1995 (Archibald, 1995), involved detailed geological mapping, magnetometer and VLF-EM surveys, and backhoe pitting and sampling for heavy minerals on the central block of claims. Of the thirteen pits that were sampled, one contained 24 specks of gold per cubic yard, one contained 60 grains per 2.5 yd3 and three others contained a few grains each. The auriferous sites are located mainly on claims 1201473, 1174010 and 1201471 (Figure 1). The geophysical surveys outlined several targets that were considered worthy of further investigation.

The second exploration campaign (Archibald, 1996) was conducted October-November, 1996 and involved diamond drilling four holes on claims 1110143, 1201473, 1174480, andl 171421, as well as geological mapping, and magnetometer and VLF-EM surveys on claims 1174416, 1174530, and 1174531. Several lamprophyre dikes were intersected by the drill holes, particularly on claim 1171421 which was designed to intersect the Ward Lake - Coleman Creek Fault and the northwest contact of the Firesand Carbonatite.

7 GEOLOGY OF THE CLAIMS 1163960, 1174530, 1174531 AND 1174532

The claims are underlain by rocks of the Wawa Assemblage. Detailed mapping by Archibald (1996) (Figure 2) and by Rupert (1975) show that the rocks are predominantly mafic to intermediate volcanic rock comprising predominantly fine grained flows (basalts). Two flows, 25 m and 50 m in width, of coarse-grained mafic (gabbroic) flows were observed by Archibald (1996). This steeply dipping, east northeast trending, north facing sequence of flows is cut by several north northwest trending dikes of diabase, gabbro, olivine gabbro, peridotite and amphibolite. All units have been cut by northeast trending carbonate-rich shear zones, some of which contain quartz veins and quartz-calcite veins.

8 METHODOLOGY

8.1 Sampling

The sampling medium of choice was till. If till was not available, then glaciofluvial materials was the second choice. The optimum sample locations were

R. D. Thomas and Associates December 16, 1997 Page 7 of 17

Page 12: RPT ON GEOCHEM ANALYSES OF TILL SAMPLES FEDER N …...Gold was discovered on the shores of Lake Wawa in 1897 and the ensuing gold rush created the Michipicoten Mining Division with

chosen before the field crew left for Wawa based on the previous work that was available. Samples locations were selected to test previously delimited magnetic and/or VLF-EM targets.

Upon mobilization to Wawa, the field crew, comprising Igor Bilot and Marc Filion of Consorminex Inc., visited the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to obtain the latest information on the forestry roads in the area. This information was useful to locate the roads on maps such that the sampling could be completed efficiently. The sampling was completed between September 5 and 16, 1997 by the two man field crew. Sample locations were located on the cut grid or by means of pace and compass traverses from known reference points along the roads, rivers or lakes. Topographic maps were used as an aid in locating the points.

At each site, a 15 - 20 kg bulk sample for heavy mineral concentration and a 250 gm "soil" sample were collected. The samples were taken by hand digging a 0.5 -1.0m deep pit, preferable into unoxidized till. In many places, where bedrock was less than 1 m from surface, the material was oxidized throughout the section. The walls of the pit were examined to determine the stratigraphy of the materials present. If till was present, then this material was sampled. The treatment and results of the bulk samples have been previously described (Thomas, 1997). The notes describing the location of the sample, the nature of the materials and the terrain at each site are also in Thomas (1997). The sample location was marked on a topographic map and a flag bearing the sample number was tied to a nearby tree.

The 250 gram samples were delivered to R. D. Thomas and Associates in Carp, Ontario for storage. The eight samples which were taken from the northern claim group were selected and shipped to Activation Laboratories for geochemical analysis.

8.2 Laboratory Analysis

The ^O-mesh fraction of the geochemical samples was analysed by the "Au + 47" combination INAA/Total digestion - ICP package. This package utilizes both the INAA and 4-acid digestion-ICP techniques. The elements determined are listed in Table 1 along with their detection limits. Note that Ag, Ca, Mo, Ni, Sr, and Zn are analysed by both techniques. Except for Mo and Sr, the ICP technique obtains a lower detection limit and is generally considered to have a more accurate result.

9 RESULTS

The geochemical laboratory reports are presented in Appendix l. Other data related to the samples are presented in Thomas (1997) and are summarized where pertinent, below.

A total of eight samples were collected from the four northern claims. Seven were classified as tills, one 97RND04 was classified as silt. This latter sample is probably of material derived from the washing of the till by a postglacial lake.

9.1 Gold and base metals

Pyrite was found in the heavy mineral concentrate of sample 97-RND-92 and pseudomorphs after pyrite (PAP), basically oxidized pyrite, were observed in the heavy mineral concentrate from sample 97-RND-06 (Figure 3). Geochemically, gold was detected in sample 97RND-06 (6 ppb) but was not detected in 97RND-92 ^2 ppb) (Figure 3). Two other samples, 97RND-03 and 97RND-04, contained detectable gold, 3 and 4 ppb respectively. Although none of these results can be considered "anomalous", they are significant because the "normal" gold content of till is generally ^1 ppb.

Sample 97RND-06 also contains anomalous quantities of As (7.7 ppm), and Mo (6 ppm INAA) (Figure 4). Sample 97RND-03 also contains anomalous quantities of Ag (0.7 ppm ICP) and As (6.9 ppm). 97RND-04 contains anomalous quantities of Ag (0.7 ppm ICP), Sb (0.8 ppm), and elevated quantities of As (2.6 ppm), Cu (152 ppm) and Zn (118 ppm ICP and 144 ppm INAA). Other samples of interest include 97RND-02 which contains anomalous As (10 ppm) and 97RND-92 which contains anomalous quantities of As (5.1 ppm) and elevated amounts of Ag (0.5 ppm ICP).

9.2 Elements associated with kimberlitic intrusions

The heavy mineral concentrates from samples 97RND-01 and 97RND-92 contained 4 and 3 grains of ilmenite respectively (Figure 5). The geochemical analyses of the eight samples contained and average of 0.42 07o Ti varying from a minimum of Q.30% to a maximum of Q.70% (Figure 5). Samples 97RND-01 and 97RND-92 contained Q.40% and Q.36% Ti respectively, which is not significantly different from the average of all samples. Also all results except 97RND-04 (Q.70% Ti) are below the estimated crustal abundance of Q.632% for Ti (Mason and Moore, 1982). Similarly all samples contained normal abundances for Co, Ni, and Gr, elements that might indicate the presence of ultramafic bodies or kimberlites.

10 SUMMARY AND DISCUSSION

There appears to be a close association of Au with pyrite, Ag and As. Mo, Cu and Zn are also present in some samples. This association is strongest in samples 97RND-03, 97RND-04 and 97RND-06 which are grouped in the central part of claim 1174530. The pyrite pseudomorphs observed in the heavy mineral concentrate of sample 97RND-92 does not appear to be of similar genesis. The bedrock source of the former sulphide mineralization may be associated with VLF anomaly "A" or "B" (Archibald 1996). The style of mineralization may be similar to that found along the Jubilee Shear where the main deposits are in predeformation quartz-carbonate-chlorite- tourmaline veins in locations outside the main zone of deformation (Samson et a /., 1997).

None of the samples contained significant quantities of Ni, Cr, Co or other metals that would indicate the presence of nearby mafic or ultramafic intrusive bodies. The results do not negate the presence of these bodies either as the distribution of the samples does not evenly sample the claims.

1 1 RECOMMENDATIONS

The present study has shown an association between pyrite, Au, Ag As and in places Mo, Cu and Zn. In order to better define the source of the gold mineralization, further till or humus sampling should be completed to determine the extent and location of the anomaly. Some geophysical surveying, induced potential or MaxMin, may be required to define the mineralization at depth. By these techniques a drillable target will be defined.

The presence of kimberlite bodies associated with the ilmenite bearing samples on these claims appears unlikely. The olivine gabbro dike which occurs up-ice from these samples should be examined to determine if it contains ilmenite that could be the source of the mineral in the heavy mineral concentrates.

Other recommendations for further work based on the heavy mineral till sampling program (Thomas, 1997) are still valid and should be implemented.

This report is respectfully submitted by,
