Liverpool Philharmonic Welcomes You...

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is open! We’re delighted to return to live music making this Winter in a series of concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company and associated ensembles.

Our venue is Covid-secure, with special measures taken, including socially-distanced seating, one-way systems, hand sanitiser stations and regular fogging of our building. In recent surveys, 98% of customers said they felt completely or very safe in attending and a similar number rated their overall experience as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’.

Audiences commented on recent performances:

“I am so glad Liverpool Phil started to provide concerts and made such excellent arrangements to provide concerts safely. I have really enjoyed each of the concerts and it was great to see other regular Phil attendees.”

“Very emotional. When the first note was played I burst into tears.”

“A few bars, and I knew I was again hearing a great orchestra. A joy to see and hear players I know and love, who haven’t performed at the Phil for months but who still had the excellence and unmistakable Phil sound.”

Don’t miss performances featuring Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko (page 11, 19, 20, 21), Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze (page 7, 9), and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason (page 9).

We mark the 40th anniversary of John Lennon’s death in December with three performances of John Lennon: A Life in Music (page 4).

And for Christmas, we welcome the whole family to enjoy The Snowman with Live Orchestra (page 5) and The Nutcracker: Re-imagined when the Orchestra’s brass and percussion join in the fun (page 6).

All concerts are approximately one-hour long with no interval. Seating is socially distanced with a capacity of c. 350 seats.

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on Demand

If you are unable to join us for live concerts, enjoy performances in the comfort of your home with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra On Demand.

We’ll bring the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to your living room with an innovative new online experience featuring not only concerts, but musicians and conductors from around the world talking about the works they love.

The 4* Times review of our first ‘On Demand’ performance praised “a performance of dancing colours, crisp beauty and punch… Petrenko’s forces played with heart, soul and all the other necessaries in a performance strong enough to overwhelm even a home listener alone with a laptop.”

On the date of broadcast, the concert is preceded by a live pre-concert talk on Zoom with BBC Radio 3 broadcaster and author Stephen Johnson, and a post-concert Q and A session with musicians, conductors and composers in a sort of ‘post-match analysis’, where you can ask questions and participate.

On Demand concerts are marked throughout with this symbol:

Tickets are £10 or £45 for the series of 5 concerts. To book and for further details visit liverpoolphil.com/ondemand

Dag Wirén Serenade for Strings Nielsen Flute Concerto Beethoven Symphony No.8

Andrew Manze conductor Cormac Henry flute

Dag Wirén once wrote the Swedish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. It wasn’t a hit, but his catchy and hugely popular String Serenade had already made his name. As a fan of Carl Nielsen, he would have been delighted to be paired with Nielsen’s idyllic yet eccentric Flute Concerto performed in these concerts by the Orchestra’s own Cormac Henry. Nielsen called Beethoven “the revolutionary”. Certainly the Eighth Symphony broke new ground even for Beethoven - drama and lyricism abound alongside tongue-in-cheek moments and a few surprises.

Weber Symphony No.2 in C Dvořák (arr. G Morton) Cello Concerto

Andrew Manze conductor Sheku Kanneh-Mason cello

Needing no introduction to our audience, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason (who memorably performed at the royal wedding of Meghan and Prince Harry) brings us Dvořák’s nostalgic cello concerto. Homesick in America and hearing that his wife’s sister - and also his first love - was seriously ill, Dvořák poured his heart and soul into a new piece for the cello. Full of personal touches and meanings he created one of the most beloved of all concertos. In contrast, to open, Carl Maria von Weber delivers a delicious classical symphonic bonbon.

Mendelssohn Midsummer Night’s Dream: Overture, Nocturne and ScherzoTchaikovsky Suite No.4 in G Mozartiana

Vasily Petrenko conductor

Mendelssohn was just 18 when he wrote his famous overture. He travelled 80 miles through the snow to hear his first big public success but it was 16 years before he wrote the rest of the music for Shakespeare’s iconic play. Tchaikovsky called Mozart “my god”, and his musical homage was to take four pieces by the composer, make them his own, and celebrate “these pearls of musical art”. Glorious music!

Karl Jenkins Palladio Elgar Serenade for Strings Sibelius Andante Festivo Mendelssohn String Symphony No.7 in D minor

Rebecca Tong conductor

Written 25 years ago, this work by Karl Jenkins was influenced by the wonderful 16th century Italian architect, Andreas Palladio. The piece reflects the perfect balance and precision found in his buildings (and we know you’ll go home with the tune in your head). A work which immediately summons an image of English countryside is Elgar’s Serenade for Strings. Did you know that the first public UK performance was given in New Brighton? Today the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra strings are conducted by Rebecca Tong, recent winner of the La Maestra International Conducting competition.

Born on the backstreets of Buenos Aires, tango is more than just a dance fuelled by passion. It’s a cry for justice, the song of a wounded heart, and in the hands of Astor Piazzolla, it conquered the world: sexy, stylish, moving with ease between the worlds of popular and classical music. Tonight, we salute the king of ‘nuevo tango’ in what would have been his 100th birthday year with a world premiere orchestration of his Suite, Midsummer Night’s Dream.

MozartPiano Concerto No.24 SchubertSymphony No.2

Mihhail Gerts conductor Martin James Bartlett piano

“O Mozart! Immortal Mozart! - what countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!” wrote Franz Schubert, clearly in awe of the composer. Written when only a teenager, after a grand opening, the sprightly first movement of the composer’s Second Symphony reflects his youth and energy. Making his Liverpool debut, pianist Martin James Bartlett brings one of only two of Mozart’s piano concertos written in a minor key – a deeply serious opening full of drama. A perfect Viennese double bill!

This concert will be a fantastic opportunity to learn a piece from both a player’s and composer’s perspective. There will be demonstrations of period instruments, looking at the developments over the centuries, exploring the impact of that evolution on sound and on the challenges and joys of music-making. We’ll also take the Septet apart and show the inner workings of this absolute masterpiece. The evening will conclude with a complete performance of the Beethoven Septet.

Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1 Beethoven Symphony No.2 Vasily Petrenko conductorAnastasia Kobekina cello

Sponsored by

The friendship between the cellist Rostropovich and several composers produced many works that are the backbone of the cello repertoire today. Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 is perhaps the most well-known, and was first performed by him 60 years ago. Respecting each other as artist and composer, their friendship was long and they spent many hours together talking about music whilst quenching their thirst! The sheer force of energy that thrusts out of the cellos opening bars builds to a tremendous ending which simply leaves the soloist (and audience) out of breath. After two years of sketching which coincided with his realisation that his hearing was becoming a problem, Beethoven produced his Second Symphony, one of the last works he was able to hear performed.

StravinskySuite No.1 for Small OrchestraShostakovichIncidental Music to Hamlet (Concert Suite from the incidental music)Schreker Birthday of the Infanta

Vasily Petrenko conductor

The world of the theatre dominates in this concert, with Vasily Petrenko bringing music from one of his signature composers (Shostakovich) and introducing us to a younger contemporary of his beloved Mahler (Schreker). Shostakovich’s thrilling score runs the gamut of styles and emotions as he mirrors the twists and turns of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Franz Schreker’s sumptuous and brilliant score to a theatrical pantomime based on a novella by Oscar Wilde, marked him out as a potential successor to Mahler and Strauss. A cheeky opener by Stravinsky sets the scene for the dramas.

Building on the success of Discover the Classics, this season we’re delighted to present Discover: Beethoven String Quartets featuring cellist Geth-yn Jones and the Ensemble of St Luke’s, made up of members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmon-ic Orchestra.

In celebration of Beethoven’s 250th year in 2020, the Ensemble of St Luke’s and Gethyn Jones survey three of Beethoven’s string quartets. Combining full performances of the Quartets with Jones’ affable, informed and often humorous lectures about Beethoven, his world, his life and his music, these Saturday concerts are a great way to get closer to the music and musicians who perform it.

Part of the Op. 59, ‘Razumovsky’ quartets, this work was composed during Beethoven’s middle period which was, like all of his life, a time of intense highs and lows. There was an especially striking contrast between his impressive professional success and his rapidly deteriorating health. He put all of his life experience into his work, successfully channelling his struggles and tribulations into his music.

Kurt SchwertsikSchrumpf-Symphonie op. 80 SchubertSymphony No.9 ‘The Great’

Kevin John Edusei conductor

For his debut with the Orchestra, Kevin John Edusei brings us two Viennese composers from very different eras. Maverick Kurt Schwertsik’s engaging music is laced with wry humour. ‘Schrumpf’ means shrunken and that is exactly what it is - a miniature symphony. Schubert’s Ninth Symphony is quite the opposite. Discovered by Robert Schumann ten years after Schubert’s death he famously described it as having a “heavenly length”. It is monumental in scale, a roller-coaster of rhythmical energy and lyricism that leaves you exhilarated.

Tickets£32, £28, £24
