concert followed tea and a very interesting programme was much appreciated. As is well known by those who have been stationed at Woolwich, our married families, who are mostly on the lodging list, are scattered over a very large area, and were it not for these gatherings, so kindly organized by the ladies, there are some o our wives who would not meet from one year's €lid to the other. Many are the thanks, therefore, due for the spontaneous invitations which bring our folks together now and again.

" Patients' Enterta~nments.-The usual series of miscellaneous winter entertain-ments for· the patients in the Royal Herbert Hospital commenced last month with an excellent concert furnished by some local professionals and assisted by members of the Royal Artillery Band. The second concert was given by the Corps' Variety Tronpe on November 12, under the stage managership of Staff-Serjeant Pettley. The Items included several of the latest successes. Both concerts were immensely successful and were thoroughly appreciated by both the patients, the staff, and a large number of their friends. These entertainments are held in the hospital theatre, which has very good stage arrangements and accommodation for about 350 persons. The next entertainment takes the form of a lantern lecture by the hospital chaplain, the Rev. C. A. Peacock, on 'The Island of Malta,' from which station he has recently returned and of which he has a unique and interesting collection of slides.

"Games Tournament.-The members of the Lancer Depot Serjeants' Mess were the guests of the Royal Army Medical Corps' Smieantson November 1, when a games tournament took place in which the Royal Army Medical Corps came out victorious by twelve events to five. Billiards went all in favour of the Corps members and this gave them their snbstantial lead. However, the games are not 'the all' that makes these inter-mess competitions serve as pleasant reminders of good comradeship. There was plenty of conviviality in addition to the events proper, and the evening seemed to pass all too quickly. An invitation has been received for a return tournament to be held in the Lancers' Mess.

"Cookery Eo,hibition Successes.-Woolwich sent up two competitors to the National Cookery Exhibition, Privates Daltry and Williams; the former was awarded a silver medal and the latter a bronze medal, and each obtained a mone\' prize." .

NOTES FROM SHORNCLIFFE.-lVIajor A. W. Hooper, D.S:O. writes, November 14, 1912: "On November 5, Shorncliffe was honoured by a visit from Princess Henry of Battenberg, who came to visit the Helena Hospital.

"It was unfortunately a very wet day, but this did not prevent a largenumher of people from the camp coming out to give her a cordial and loyal welcome.

"Her Royal Highness was accompanied by :Miss Anne Annetta :Minna Oochrane (Lady in Waiting), Mr. Victor Cochrane (Oomptroller and Treasurer), and she waos escorted by Brigadier-General J. A. L. Haldane, O.B., D.S.O., and Staff to the hospital.

"Princess Beatrice was met by a Guard of Honour·furnished by the 2nd Battaolion Seaforth Highlanders, under Captain l\brshall, the band playing" God Save the King" as Her Royal Highness arrived.

" The Princess was received on her arrival by the Senior :Medical Officer, Shornclit1e, Lieutenant-Colonel D. V. O'Oonnell, and Major G. H. Goddrtrd, Officer in charge of the Hospital, who conducted her round the Institution. .

" The present building was opened in 1909 by Princess Christian, after whom it is named, and since that date about 628 patients have been received within its walls.

" The Princess spoke in very pleasing terms to several of the patients, and was particularly interested in the small children there. She thought .the hospital a very comfortable place for the patients and was extremely glad that it was utilized so largely by the women and children of the district.

.. The cricket sea~on was in every way successful and a large number of games were played. Corporal Mayman, as last year, was most in evidence, both in batting and bowling, having the good average of 34 and taking 76 wickets, at an average of i runs each.

"Now, however, all thoughts are given to football, and our team is engaged in League matches, regimental matches, and also in the Harwood Cup Competion. The first tie for the Harwood Cup was played last Saturday (November 9) and resulted in a win for us by 2 goals to none. The team from Chatham was unfortnnate in losing two men from injuries and being weakened in consequenee. Co rp(IJral Mayman and Private Crowther scored for us and Corporal Stoner, the Secretary, should also be mentioned for his keenness in training the team. "

NOTES FROM CAIRO.-Serjeant-lVlajor Conolly, writes November 4, 1912: "The cricket season has now come to a close, and, although we did not have a very successful season, some very pleasant matches ensued. The team should do better next year as we have been strengthened by Lieutenants O'Connor and Nicol, and we are in hopes of some more new blood before the trooping season ends.

" The Company lost a good cricketer and footballer in Corporal Douglas, who sailed for England on the' Rohilla' in September.

"Foothall has started in Cairo, and No. 33 Company will do very well this year if they keep up the present form. New players to our team are Privates Coney, Ferdinando, Dedow, Sims, and Squirrel. Up to the present we have played seven matches, winning three and losing four. Goal average, 19 for and 9 against.

"Private Sims, our light weight boxer, has accepted the challenge of Private Keddie, 1st Suffolk Regiment (light weight champion of Egypt and the Soudan), and in all probability the contest will take place some time in December. We hope the best man wins. Our man met Keddie in a six-round contest in July last, and, after a very clean fight, lost by a very small margin on points. The forthcoming fight has aroused considerable interest in Cairo."

ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS CENTRAL MESS FUND AND GAMES COMMITTEE.

PROCEEDINGS OF A MEETING OF THE ABOVE COMMITTEE (WHICH WAS APPOINTED AT THE LAST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE CORPS),' HELD AT THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL COLLEGE, ON NOVEMBER 4, 1912.

    The following representatives of the various messes were present :-Aldershot.-Major A. R. Greenwood, Captain .T. J. Wright. Chatham.-Major G. A. Moore. Cosham.-Major W. P. Adye-Curran. Curragh.-Captain H. B. Kelly, Lieutenant R. T. Vivian. London. -Captains A. B. Smallman and G. A. D. Harvey. Netley.-·Major D. Lawson. Woolwich.-Major A. C. Chopping. Majors J. C. Jameson (Woolwich), and A. H. Mitchell (Netley), were unable to be

present, as were several representatives of messes abroad who had been invited to attend.

Major D. Lawson (Netley) having been elected Oh airman on the proposal of Captain G. A. D. Harvey (London), seconded by Major G. A. Moore (Ohatham), the question of the proposed Oentral Mess Fund was thoroughly.discussed, and the following resolutions were carried unanimously: --

    (1) "That the annual subscription of half a day's pay, recommended by the Annual General Meeting, is necessary if the Fund is to be a success." (If all officers of the Corps on the active list subscribe, it is estimated that the income of the Fund will be about £580 per annum.)

    (2) "That the Fund be expended in granting financial help :-" (a) To new messes, on starting. "(b) Towards outlay required in re-fitting messes. "(c) To messes in temporary financial difficulties. " (d) In fitting out messes for camps of instruction. "(e) In any other cases where the necessity for help may arise."

In all the above cases the grant of as,istance will be entirely at the discretion of the Central Oommittee, who will decide whether it shall take the form of a loan or donation.

    (3) "That all officers subscribing to the Central Fund be, ipso facto, honorary members of all Roya'! Army Medical Oorps messes.

    (4) "That until a sufficient sum has accumulated, 20 per cent of the annual income of the Fund be set aside to maintain, where necessary (local funds not being available), messes closed during war, and to assist them to re-open."

    (5) "That at future meetings of the Committee five members constitute a quorum."

    (6) "That it is most desirable that the opinion of every officer of the Oorps be obtained as to whether he is willing to subscribe to the proposed Fund: and that to ensure a complete and prompt reply a copy of these resolutions be sent, semi-officially, to eV61ry D.D.M.S. and A.D.M.S. with a request that he will kindly circulate them in his command and return the result to the Honorary Secretary."

[It is particularly requested that any officer who, being on leave, or for any other reason, may not receive this circular, will send his opinion on the matter direct to the Honorary Secretary.]

The Oommittee then discussed the question of how the interest of the Corps in games could best be promoted. The matter was' held over for further consideration.

Oaptains A. B. Smallman, P. A. Lloyd Jones, and Private G. B. Orooke proceeded to Turkey with units of the British Red Oross Society on the 26th ult.

The cost of equipping and despatching a unit is estimated not to exceed £1,500. The cost of paying and feeding a Unit, and maintaining its supplies for six months,

is estimated not to be less than £4,000, and may be considerably more, according to the extent of the relief afforded.

    BRITISH RED OROSS BASE HOSPITALS.

At Antivari, Montenegro, a Red Oross Base Hospital has been opened, whilst dressing-stations have been established at Peaker and at Pentaro.

At Oonstantinople, the Fine Arts School, oppoaite to the building originally used by the late Florence Nightingale as a Military Hospital at Scutari, has been formed into a Red Oross Hospital by our Turkish units.

At Salonica, the Greek units have improvised a Field Hospital. At Kirk Kilisse, our Bulgarian units are now actively engaged in giving relief to

the wounded. ' Oonsiderable difficulty is being experienced in forwarding supplies to Turkey. Funds are urgently needed to maintain the units that are at present in service: The wide extent of the fighting, the bareness of the country, the severe climate and

the tot!l.lly inadequate provision for the sick and wounded, make it inevitable that the suffering in the rear of the contending armies will be without a parallel in modern times.
