From The Editor… The seven dwarfs went off to work in the mine one day, while Snow White stayed at home to do the house work and cook their lunch.

However, when she went to the mine to deliver their lunches, she found there had been a cave in, and there was no sign of the dwarfs.

Tearfully she yelled into the mine entrance “hello—is anyone there, can any-one here me?”

A voice floated up from the bowels of the mine “New Zealand will win the Rugby World Cup”

“Thank god” said Snow White “at least Dopey’s still alive”

IGNITION. November 2007. Where has the month and year gone? Firstly the Nove Rove is now officially an annual event. Tthanks to the Halfords for the trophy. The first weekend of November is now “Nove Rove” weekend. Remember to annually mark you calendars! For those who took part starting November 3rd Saturday morning in Balclutha, then travelling down the Catlins Coast with various stopping places of interest and arriving in Invercargill for the night. The evening concluded with a meal and general fellowship in the lounge and bar areas after the presentation of awards as seen fit by the Halfords. These included the Nove Rove trophy won by Karen and Reid Buchan. The following morning we headed for Richardsons Truck Museum where there was something intriguing for everyone, from small cars to 1920’s Paddy Wagons, to Big, Big Rigs, in all shapes, colours and sizes. Then twas the Road Rally part where in the end everyone was lost at one time or other, INCLUDING THE DESIGNER! A number of us managed to arrive at the park designated for lunch and a photo shoot, after the break, off to Balcluth via Tapanui, with a stop at Pukerau to allow some passengers to ride in the correct cars to get home. A big THANK YOU to Bernie and Steph for their efforts in making the weekend so enjoyable. The first meeting for 2008 will be Wednesday 6th February , but at Decembers meeting we will be looking at a social event to start the New Year somewhere, as the end of a year is usually very busy for most of us. That’s enough from me. Safe and enjoyable travel to you all. Norman & Carleen S. President.

Waipapa Point Light House.

This lighthouse shone for the first time on the 1st of January 1884. It marks the scene of NZ’s worst civilian shipwreck, when 131 OF 151 passengers drowned on 29th April 1881. After the shipwreck, a Court of Inquiry recom-mended that this lighthouse be established and for two important changes to occur in maritime safety procedures. These changes were the compulsory provision of life jackets for all passengers onboard and the requirement that crew regularly practice lifeboat evacuation procedures. The wooden tower stands 13metres high and is 21metres above sea level. The light flashes 5 times every 20 seconds and can be seen for 9 nautical miles (16km). The 50watt lamp operates on a battery charged by solar panels. The light was fully automated in 1976 and the lighthouse keeper was with-drawn. The operation of the light is fully automatic and is monitored by a computer and Maritime NZ staff in Wellington.

Nove Rove 2007

The first thing we did was drive to Balclutha and meet up with all the other Rovers. There we got our instruction sheets for the trip. It was or-ganised by Bernie and Bill. Next we headed for the Catlins and stopped at the Owaka Museum. In-side the Museum was a display that showed the surrounding area. It had buttons with locations written beside them. When you pressed the but-ton, a light would turn on the display to show where the location was. Us kids played around on it. Near by there was a bigger display which you had to get a token to see. There was a hut with birds and a Possum on the roof. There was also a display of huge saw blades and other tools from the area. There was a big bone from a whale as well. Around the corner there was a door from a local jail. A sign said “open the door to see who the villain is”. I thought there would be a puppet inside, but it wasn’t. When I opened the door the villain was me! There was a mirror behind the door. I thought is was a great joke. We looked around the rest of the Museum and then we hit the road again.

When we stood up on Hill Lookout we had a great view of Tau-tuku Bay. After lunch we went to Curio Bay and the Fossil Forest where there were amazing shells on the beach. One of the best places we went to was Slope Point, the southern most point in the South Island. From there you could see Stewart Island. It is 5140km from the Equator and 4803km from the South Pole. At Waipara Point was a lighthouse and after that we travelled to Bluff Hill. It was really cold up there! After Bluff it was a short drive to Invercargill and our Motel. We had dinner in the dining room. We all had the same main but we got to have different deserts. I had a lovely mud cake. The next morning we had a look at Richardson’s Truck Mu-seum. In there was hundreds of trucks, displays, truck parts and lots of other stuff. We spent about 2 hours there. After that we stopped to look at some tulips. The colours were amazing; my favourite was the striped ones. Some travelled to Dalamore Park for lunch, while others got a bit lost. I got to ride in the Smith’s SD1 which was great. We met up near Balclutha then we travelled back home. By Rachel Pilley, age 11.
