News from the Round Table

A Foundation for Success

Often, one does not know what he or she has until it is gone. John Bapst is not one of those things. When I was at Bapst, I loved it. I thrived in the environment that could only foster success. But I did, however, take for granted the community created within Bapst between students, and faculty as well. I simply assumed all schools had friendly students, enthusiastic teachers, and school pride.

The summer before my senior year of high school, I moved to southern California. Of all the places to live for a year, I got pretty lucky. The high school I attended, Yucaipa High School, has an outdoor campus, sunny skies, and a large student body. But minutes after the final bell has rung, the campus is deserted. Most teachers do not offer help during lunch, or before or after school because it is not in their contract. Peer attendance at sport-ing events is, at best, sparse. And it is not just Yucaipa: I attended sporting events and other activities at surrounding schools, and found the same.

Bapst, however, I found to be just the opposite: welcoming, enthusiastic, challenging, and full of school pride. I cannot say enough how I miss it. For obvious reasons, Bapst‟s academic strength, extracurricular depth, and variety of competitive sports set it apart from

surrounding schools. What makes Bapst unique--a fond memory--is the community. The students, dedicated teachers, passionate administration, and school pride. Often, I had to stay at school quite late, and I found teachers at their desks and fellow students in the auditorium. Yes, parking can be an adventure at times and Bapst lacks athletic fields directly on campus, but it adds to the character of the school. It brings the students together: I am sure I am not the only one who has had many fond memories car-pooling.

I am glad I have experienced the “other side” to be able to recognize what a community brings to a school, and to be able to consider this when choosing a college. I would like to think that I would have looked back on high school and appreciated all it had to offer; now, I am just thankful that I even got to go to Bapst. I‟d like to thank my teachers, Mr. Green, and classmates for a great three years.

Forty-eight years ago, I graduated from John Bapst High School. I remember being very proud of my diploma that day. My dad had been on the first faculty teaching English and Math and had been the first athletic coach when John Bapst opened in Sep-tember of 1928. In fact, he was the reason John Bapst became the Purple and White Crusaders - he having graduated that past June from the Purple and White Crusaders of Holy Cross. My two older brothers were John Bapst alums so we were a through and through John Bapst family. The 1950's were the days when the Xaverian Brothers taught the boys and the Sisters of Mercy taught the girls. The school was divided into the boys‟ section and girls‟ section. The upper entrance to the school toward Somerset St. was the boys‟ entrance and the lower entrance toward State Street was for the girls. The only way you could walk from the boys' to the girls' half of the school was through the audito-rium and the library, and woe to any boy or girl caught trying to go from one side to the other gender's side of the school! Because the library offered unimpeded passage from one side to the other, schedules were strictly followed allowing library time for either “boys only or girls only but never heaven forbid! - both in there at the same time. The only time we got together with the girls was for pep rallies before the big game or for dances.

So many stories have survived the years about the Brothers and the Nuns and how strict they were. Just about all of the stories have been colored and inflated as the years have passed so that they have become legends - most of them unencumbered by fact or veracity. Despite all the stories, I'd be hard-pressed to find any former student of those years who would complain that he or she didn't receive a fine high school education.

The "After High School Next Life" kicked in for us right away. For me, it was eight more years of school then three in the Navy living in California, Southeast Asia, back to Boston and then, answering the pull of the "Bangor Umbilicus", back home. In those eleven years since graduation, with the waters under the bridge carrying all that we'd experienced in those times, John Bapst, for many of us, had become a rather distant memory.

Some years after I had relocated back to Bangor, Joe Sekera, a man for whom I have the high-est respect, asked if I would consider serving on the John Bapst Board of Trustees. While I was flattered to

have been asked, I did not accept immediately be-cause I had had very little to do with the school for such a long time, and it was a different school from the one which I had graduated. But, because I still

This letter of appreciation introduces an alumni magazine and annual report in which we are proud to announce an Annual Fund that achieved its goal and a level of support and involvement that makes us very optimistic about the future of John Bapst. The pages that follow once again demonstrate how loyal and how com-mitted the trustees, alumni, parents current and past, faculty, stu-dents, and friends of the school are.

In June 2007, the legislature in Maine attached a sweeping, statewide school consolidation effort to the budget bill, and it passed. As an independent school, John Bapst does not need to consolidate with surrounding schools or districts. We do, however, have to make sure to tell our story effectively.

The first order of business is to reassure current and pro-spective parents that we are here to stay. The legislation specifi-cally states that towns enjoying school choice today will have school choice in the future. If you live in one of those school choice com-munities, be sure to let the leaders in your town know how important school choice is to you.

“John Bapst Is Here to Stay” might make a nice title for a Gershwin song, but what is it that makes it so crucial that the school be here?

The story of John Bapst is about academic challenge, close community, and personal growth. Every student who walks through the doors of John Bapst is making the same statement: “College is my aspiration.” Students know that they‟re part of a mutually sup-portive community, a school small enough for teachers to take a personal interest in students‟ success. And students quickly realize that qualities like creativity, leadership, and spirit are everywhere at John Bapst. It‟s rewarding to be involved.

As this magazine goes to press, I am enjoying my first se-mester in this school community. Among the many pleasant re-sponsibilities I have is the privilege of thanking you for supporting the faculty and students of this great school. In the midst of school consolidation, your support is especially meaningful. As we work to retain and enhance the character and quality of John Bapst, your continued support will be essential. Let‟s all look forward to great years ahead for John Bapst.

From the Head of School

Mel MacKay

Bapst Football Re-Cap Dan O’Connell, Head Football Coach Entering the 2007-2008 high school football season the theme at John Bapst was potential. It was clear that the team could potentially win a lot of games. The team could potentially win a playoff game. The team could potentially challenge for a league title. The team could po-tentially end up in Portlad playing for a State Championship. The team could potentially accomplish none of those things. We began to tap into that poten-tial in mid-August. By the time they lined up against perennial power Foxcroft Academy on August 31, the entire region was waiting to see which John Bapst team was going to arrive. The team that cracked under pressure, believed their own hype, and the team that was not ready to challenge teams like FA, or a savvy, veteran-filled, seasoned team, which expected to win and wanted to take “what was theirs?” After that night, the answer was clear.

The Crusaders went on to lose that night, 13-12. However, they followed that effort with an exhilarat-ing 22-20 win over conference foe Mattanawcook Academy, and they did not look back. We won eight games in a row, good enough for second place in the LTC and our first home playoff game in decades. When asked if these kids had reached their potential by a local reporter I said, “These kids deserve all the credit in the world. They have worked hard, both in the off season, and during this season, and hope-fully now that is paying off. Their work ethic has been tremendous, and they have brought football back to respectability at John Bapst.” Win or lose, these kids should be proud. They exemplify the sprit, dedication and commitment that are expected of the John Bapst Student-Athlete. After everything we‟ve been through this year, I love them, I am proud of them and you should be too! GO CRUSADERS!

National Acclaim for Bapst Science & Math Programs The Siemens Foundation and the College Board has announced that John Bapst Memorial High School won the pres-tigious 2006-07 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement in Maine. One of fifty high schools nationally to win the award this year, John Bapst will receive a grant to further support science and mathematics education at the school.

Selection for the award was based upon the school‟s continued growth and contributions to the AP Program, specifi-cally in supporting students‟ educational experiences in science, mathematics, and technology; helping traditionally-underrepresented students prepare for college; and encouraging students to excel through the AP program.

This is the second year in a row that John Bapst has been recognized as having one of the strongest Advanced Place-ment (AP) programs in Maine, specifically in the subjects of AP Biology and AP Calculus BC. In 2006 John Bapst sci-ence tacher William LoPotro won the Siemens Foundation AP Teacher Award in Maine, and one other John Bapst teacher, Brendan Murphy of the Mathematics Department, has also previously been selected for this prestigious award.

Music Department Receives Anonymous $100,000 Gift

Midsummer phone calls from school can be much more exciting on some days than others, as John Bapst Music De-partment faculty members Al McIntyre and Julie Ewing can attest.

“When Head of School Mel MacKay called to say that he had some good news for the department, I was pleased,” said Mr. McIntyre. “When Julie and I met with him in person and found out an anonymous donor had given the school $100,000, we were stunned.” “Speechless” is the word Ms. Ewing used to describe her reaction. The terms of the donation are both targeted and open-ended. The music faculty may use the money for any purpose they see fit to improve the school‟s music program. “This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Mr. McIntyre. The department has indicated that $25,000 will be spent this year for immediate enhancements, with a Roland digital piano and new musical instrument lockers first on the list. Another $25,000 will go towards department needs during the 2008-09 school year. At this time, the department members have elected to invest $50,000 in a restricted capital account, knowing that this could be invaluable seed money toward a future campaign for arts and other school facilities. And while the name of the donor remains a mystery, the impact is not.

considered myself an alum and because of my dad's involve-ment with John Bapst in its first thirteen years, I finally ac-cepted. In a short time, my eyes were opened to this new John Bapst Memorial High School and the wonderful things happening in my old school every day. Today, I am an ardent supporter, a proud alumnus, and an admirer of the family that is today's John Bapst.

It is impossible to compare anything of today with that similar entity of the 1950's and 1960's. Today's John Bapst is no longer a parochial school and the boys and girls are not separated. John Bapst Memorial High School today is an independent, non-sectarian high school, which is solely college preparatory. It serves students from over 44 commu-nities from all socioeconomic strata. Some if its students will be the first in their family to attend college. The school ranks first or second in Maine in all categories of the Maine Educa-tion Assessment tests given annually and 98% of our gradu-ates go on to post-secondary education.

While there are obvious differences between John Bapst of the 1950's and today, I submit to you that in several ways, the two schools are similar. The school promotes an educational philosophy which exacts maximum effort from the students through homework and class recitation, it encour-ages them in meaningful extracurricular and community ac-tivities, it has a dress code and mandates adherence to real disciplinary guidelines. As a school of fewer than 500, the student body has strong familial bonding with each other and with the faculty. Students work hard and achieve within a framework of personal ethics and accountability and our graduates are among this country's best, brightest and most successful. Absent its Catholicity - a major change - the school's mission today and in my time is virtually the same. While it is undeniable that there are differences between "my" John Bapst and the John Bapst of today, I suggest that there are demonstrable similarities between the two and that those similarities, relative to core values, are meaningful ones. I am deeply proud of what John Bapst was, and of what John Bapst has become. We are Crusaders all.
