Mobile Stories (25589)  This project will provide ten communication students with an opportunity to gain professional media production experience in Timor-Leste as interns with Casa de Produção Audiovisual (CPA) that incorporates a linkage between students from Western Sydney University (WSU) and the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) through multiplatform storytelling. Established in 2003 CPA is a multimedia production centre that seeks to promote peace-building and sustainable development through audio-visual productions broadcast on television and online. As interns, students will produce a series of short documentary profiles in collaboration with local students. Completion of the internship will lead to a co-production between CPA and WSU of an interactive multiplatform documentary exploring the lives and aspirations of students at WSU and UNTL. Mobile Stories will also act as an ongoing communication network between students and support continuing partnerships between WSU and CPA. This initiative is linked to the University’s commitment to emerging technologies and will serve as a strategic model for multiplatform curriculum development within the Bachelor of Communication.

Forgotten Heritage – A Chinese conservation project for Australians

(27167)  We propose a ground-breaking, 4-week experimental learning project for 10 students in the Kaiping region of China, focusing on language, cultural exchange, conservation and the preservation of Chinese-Australian history.

From the 1800’s, thousands of Chinese nationals from this region emigrated to New South Wales as part of the Gold Rush. Many aging ‘Diaolou’ (watchtowers) and villages, four of which were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2007, were constructed using money earned in New South Wales. These historic villages represent the initial waves of Chinese émigré to Australia, to where many Australian born Chinese can trace their roots. Some buildings have been restored, yet others stand neglected despite being of great historical significance.

Students from different backgrounds will cooperate to raise Australia’s awareness of the area’s historical significance. This unique, immersive experience will consist of language classes, seminars, one-to-one support and guided tours of the local villages/industries.

This opportunity also aims to include other Australian universities in the future.

With support from two universities and business sectors in two countries, it is possible to expand the duration of the proposed three years to a continuing project and expand the scope to include a larger student group and to develop an exchange project allowing visits of Chinese business undergraduates to Australia.

Vietnamese immersion experience: an intersection of culture and

business (18131 (18133))  The Vietnam Immersion Experience offers second and third year business students the opportunity to gain exposure to life as an expatriate by working and living in Vietnam for a period of six to eight weeks. Students will receive mentorship from senior management within their host organisation as they participate in a structured work placement program that will highlight the accessibility of working in the Indo-Pacific region. In order to generate a mutually beneficial outcome for students and host organisations, participating organisations would be presented with a report by the students investigating a negotiated topic, with this report then being assessed as part of a for credit unit. With increasing success of the placement program since its inception in 2013, ten students have undertaken successful placement with four placement organisations. Interest from further industry partners provides an opportunity to expand this program and as such this program may be scaled up.

Mastering clinical skills in the country where traditional Chinese

medicine originates (19252 (19254))  As the first country in the West, Australia has introduced statutory regulation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between WSU and a Chinese university was signed in 2015 in the presence of Australian Prime Minister and Chinese President in the context of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The MOU highlighted the joint support for the validation and translation of TCM and students’ exchange. All these events have scaled up the standards of practice in TCM in the West.

WSU offers Bachelor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (BTCM) course as an initial qualification for registration. The clinical practice component (400-hour) in the program is capstone experience for students to become registrable practitioners, which is delivered at a fostering teaching hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NUCM) in China. This requires substantial financial commitment from students for covering tuition, airfares, food, accommodation, and transportation costs.
