Rotating Book Assignment Creative Arts 2 - Ms. Cornell •Each person will make a total of 12 art book pages- one from each assigned theme below. Do 2 per week. •We will share our actual pages with each other when we return. These will be made into a book. Each person gets to keep their own theme book with an artwork from each person. •Pages should be no larger than 6"x 6." They can be a bit smaller and don't need to be square. •You can use any media to complete these pages: drawing, painting, collage, photography, digital art, mixed media. Some media and techniques are listed to help you think out- side the box. Try to use a variety. Don't just use pencil or marker for every page. •Use creativity and personalize the image. Don't just draw a picture of a softball, shell, eye, etc. Think about how you feel about the item. What is your experience with it? Do you like it, hate it? How can that show in your work? •Think about design and layout. Should you show the whole object, or zoom in on a part? What type of background can you add to make the image pop? How can you add contrast? •Do your best. All put one are for other people in class, so try to do a nice job. Also, they will be graded for MP#4. •Extra Credit- if you make an artwork for my book, I will make one for yours. Let me know if you decide to do this right away so I have enough time to complete your page. These are pages my friends made for my rotating book with the Theme "Pretty Ugly." Notice the

wide variety of media, solutions, and styles.

Creativi --- -

1. Create An Inspiration File - this is a collection of interesting objects and images stored in a sketchbook, folder, or digitally in a file. When you're getting ready to brainstorm new ideas, pull out your artistic inspiration file and go to town. Reorganize it based on different criteria, such as color, or content or style.

2. Draw The Dictionary - Flip to a random page and pick a random word. Repeat. Repeat again. Eventually, you'll start building a list of random words. Do any of them naturally fit together? Do they draw create an image in your mind? What do they have in common? How can you apply it to your theme?

3. Forced Association - create a few categories of content, perhaps based on your subject, your art media, and your emotion (ex: happy, ferret, watercolor) Now, select one image or word from each of your categories and force a connection between them. (ex: happy=yellow, ferret=stealing some keys-I saw that in a movie once, watercolor=drippy) How are they related or similar? If you combine them, what do they make? The strength of the relationship isn't important. It's more important to find some sort of connection. (I might make a watercolor using drippy paint of a ferret stealing keys, and prominently feature yellow in my artwork)

4. Stream Of Consciousness Writing - Start with one simple question. What do you want to create? A still life. A sculpture of a man playing the bagpipes. A sweater embroidered with a likeness of Elvis. Whatever strikes your fancy. Next, give yourself a time limit that's at least 5 minutes long. Now write. Will it be fat Elvis or thin Elvis? What kind of jumpsuit is he wearing? What's he got in his hands? A microphone and a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. When the time expires, put your pen down and create what you've just written about.

5. Meditation/ Do something else - Your brain is a marvelous multi-tasking machine, so go do something else. Ideally, you should pick something monotonous like mowing the lawn or washing the dishes. Once your mind starts to wander, you'll be surprised how quickly it will start generating ideas. The trick is to record them as soon as they pop up, so you don't forget them.

6. Mind Map - a diagram that has a branch or root-like structure radiating from a central image on the page, and which uses lines and colour to show relationships, groupings and connections betweens words, ideas and images.

7. Brainstorm - write down as many ideas as possible very quickly without judgement, think freely without discarding ideas, even if they seem silly, piggyback on ideas, try for many ideas or solutions, and use others to brainstorm with you, if possible. When you have a huge list, go back in and find the best solutions.

8. SCAMPER - mnemonic that stands for: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse. You use the tool by asking questions about existing products or themes, using each of the seven prompts above. These questions help you come up with creative ideas for developing new products, and for improving current ones.
