Changeover The evening kicked off delightfully with Mulled Red Wine, with people enjoying the USA theme in hats and clothing. This included a “Six Gun” theme for Retiring President Stuart, chairing the evening. Table decorations, as always, had been beautifully prepared by Katrine. After the roast beef and chicken, the Sunshine Session team of Lew and Meriam Findlay tested our USA knowledge. Katrine then conducted the Lucky Draw. All prizes were won by spouses of members, namely Ann Ashwell, Joy Kemp and Sue Stewart. Changeover participants then enjoyed a very lively and engaging concert by “For Folk’s Sake”, there to support our Incoming President Bruce. Such favourites as Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” (which was written in a plane on the back of sick bag!); John Denver’s “Country Road”; and Charlie Bowman’s “East Tennessee Blues”. Other songs were “Fox on the Run”, “Folson Prison Blues”, and “Louisiana Saturday Night”, and “Waltz across Texas”, for which the Chorus words are, “Waltz across Texas with you in my arms…Like a story-book ending I’m lost in your charms… And I could waltz across Texas with you”. Retiring President Stuart presented his Report for the Year. He expressed appreciation for the support of all those who have contributed in many different areas, to the continuing success of the Club. The Wharerata team providing the catering were also thanked. Stuart recalled highlights of the year, including the visit of the World President, the DG’s visit, Allan Gillingham’s work in revising the Club’s book, the 60th Anniversary and attendance by John Cromie, the last surviving President from the 1970’s (John and Kath have moved to join the new Retirement Community, Speldhurst in Levin). Other projects were shipping of books and collection of spectacles for the Pacific Islands, QEC outreach, Polio Plus and Relay for Life, increased outreach to younger people, Social evenings with films, New Year’s BBQ. as well as wine tasting and lunch with Jean and Bruce. Two minutes silence was held for the passing of Lloyd Love. Incoming President Bruce was then inducted as the President for 2019-2020. He thanked Stuart for his contributions as past President. Bruce recalled that he had previously been President 9 years ago, and looked forward to new club projects, some of which include the Older Person of the Year, which is being promoted by Lew, and the continued outreach to the QEC students for the Duke of Edinburgh programme. He announced that the President Elect would be Reg Bridewell (with Stuart standing in at times of Reg’s absence), Katrine would be the Club Director and the Projects Director is to be announced later. The Parting Thought was given by Stuart, and was “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about dancing in the rain.”

Scribe: Bob Stewart The evening's Sunshine Session raised the grand sum of $96.90.

Missing: Katrine and Peter Imrie Ohau visit The weather might not have been good - often light rain – but the camaraderie, the wine tasting and the fruit tree exploration combined to make this a very enjoyable day. Jean, assisted by Bruce produced excellent hospitality, great soups, and a pleasantly warming fire. Bruce dispensed the wines (4) while Jean prepared the bread and apple to go with the wine. There were wine notes augmented by Stuart with his mobile speaker. Nobody was going to get to the impaired driver state and the fine food would have diluted the wine anyway, not that any one of us consumed more than ‘tastes.’ After lunch Jean led the group into the orchard and explained how the property developed. Gumboots and an umbrella proved useful accessories.
