On 27th January Peter T intro-duced Mr Steven Ludlam, until re-cently head of ASC. Steven is a nuclear and ma-rine engineer who was head-hunted
for the position in 2010 and resigned in 2014 in re-sponse to government policies.
Steven set out to demythologize some of the mis-conceptions surrounding ASC resulting from recent publicity. He started with the fact that the Collins Class submarines are/were world leaders in part due to exceptional engineering staff at ASC. He went on to speak about the politics and insufficient funding which has lead to allegations of inefficiency and waste. Steve shifted to the shipbuilding function of ASC, how it worked in a slow and thorough way whilst building experience and how again political factors play a large part in its operation and the pub-lic perception. He made it clear that cost blowouts are complex matters and often due to factors well beyond the control of the Corporation. In question time Steve had some interesting thoughts on the possible future use of nuclear power in Australia.
Our speaker on 3rd February was a return visit from Rotarian Trevor McGuirke, passionate supporter of raising awareness and bringing health care and edu-cation to Peruvian villages.
Trevor took us on a tour of his involvement with ‘Peru’s Challenge’ - to bring education and health programs to remote villages. Trevor reviewed his

From the ABCs of Ro-
tary; "The month of
February is very special
in the Rotary calendar
since it is designated
World Understanding
Month. The month also
includes the anniversary
of the first meeting of
Rotary held on February
23, 1905, now designat-
ed World Understand-
ing and Peace Day. In designating World Un-
derstanding Month, the Rotary International
board asks all Rotary clubs to plan programs
for their weekly meetings and undertake spe-
cial activities to emphasize "understanding and
goodwill as essential for world peace." World
Understanding Month is a chance for every
club to pause, plan and promote the Fourth Av-
enue of Service—Rotary’s continued quest for
goodwill, peace and understanding among peo-
ple of the world."
It is fitting then, that a number of our speakers
this month are involved in the promotion of
peace and goodwill abroad. We have had Tre-
vor McGuirk speak to us on Tuesday about the
wonderful work he is doing in Peru supporting
underprivileged communities and on the 17th
February we will hear from Diane Simmonds
who we supported in her trip to Cambodia to
help train midwives. I also urge all mem-
bers to attend Rotary's 110th birthday cele-

four trips and we again saw the school bus which must have meant so much to the village children. Trevor and his helpers have raised over $13000 for the
village of Quisguarani and other villages to provide doctors, dentists and health facilities for women’s and children’s health.
After explaining the involvement and support of the Rotary Club of Cusco, Trevor showed us a model for the delivery of health care in this remote and difficult region which is five hours from Cusco, and explained that he needed to raise $50000 over the next two years to get a funded effort off the ground. Trevor asked the Club to consider setting aside between $500 and $2000 in its 2105/16 budget and set his sights on getting 10 or 12 Clubs involved at this level of commit-ment. Pam presented Trevor with a cheque for $500 towards his goal.
brations at Pinky Flat near Adelaide oval on Sun-
day 22nd February - it should be worthwhile event
to promote Rotary in Adelaide and the work we do
both here and around the world. And finally please
donate all you can to our quiz night on 13th Febru-
ary - if you can't attend then maybe you can donate
something for the silent auction and raffle prizes.
Part of the proceeds will go towards supporting the
School of St Judes in Tanzania, which through
providing a valuable education to children who
would otherwise miss out, helps promote our quest
for goodwill, peace and understanding around the
world. Brenley
