GUEST SPEAKER: Jodie Sparks Topic: Wheels for Hope - changing lives through mobility

It is always a pleasure to welcome back to our club, old friends and family and that was especially true this morning when Joanna introduced this week’s guest speaker, our very own past member and PDG, Jodie Sparks.

Jodie attended Handicamp back in 1994 before joining Rotaract and later our Rotary club and has worked tirelessly and passionately since for so many of our great causes.

This morning she gave us an insight into her “real” job …. …. working tirelessly and passionately for another great cause. Wheels for Hope is a program of the Western Australian Motor Industry Foundation Inc., and a small, unique, WA Charity which assists WA families with disabilities by providing them with a fully equipped wheelchair-friendly vehicle so that they may access critical medical and remedial care, education and community activities. Their fleet of mainly Toyota HiAce wheelchair hoist vehicles are loaned to eligible families for 12 months periods, during which time the Foundation insure, license, service and maintain the vehicles. The only cost to the family is fuel. Assistance is restricted to families without the financial capacity to buy and maintain their own vehicle and the application process is strict. While they currently assist 48 families, 39 in the metro area and others from as far away as Geraldton and Albany, they have another 16 approved families of their waiting list. Currently it costs about $35,000 per vehicle to purchase, second hand, and fit out. Although Wheels for Hope receive generous funding from a number of supporters including Car Craft Group, Lotterywest, Perron Group and Toyota WA, additional support could help cut that wait. For more about Wheels for Hope and ways that you can help them, visit www.wheelsforhope.org.au
