District 9500 Conference
Bendigo, 2013Celebratory Bulletin Edition
Adelaide West hosted a highly successful and memorable Conference to celebrate District Governor Marie’s year in office. It was held in an excellent venue, enjoyed by everyone who attended, with the keynote speaker Li Cunxin ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’ welcomed to the stage with a standing ovation by over 550 Rotarians and guests at Bendigo.
Our Club won the Club Bulletin Award for the second consecutive year. The award, which was presented at the conference, considered the quality, scope and content of regular Club Bulletins.

Sincere apology Please accept my sincere apology for the considerable delay in Bulletin production. A combination of issues including major hardware failure, longer than usual wait time for Apple Repairers to diagnose the issue, and a three week wait to purchase and receive a replacement computer were to blame.
I am pleased to now be up and running once again! I hope you enjoy this edition of the Bulletin.
Sincerely, Tania Macdonald
The ConferenceThe 2013 District 9500 Conference hosted by Adelaide West in Bendigo from 14 to 17 March 2013, has been widely reported as the best conference held with excellent speakers, a fantastic venue and a large friendly gathering of about 400 Rotarians and partners.A golden opportunity arranged by the organising committee of inviting the Junior Bendigo CMS Dance Worx Ballet Children to perform in front of the Keynote Speaker Li Cunxin Mao’s Last Dancer’ was a huge success. Tickets were sold to the children’s families and friends at $30 per head which resulted in a crowd of nearly 550 people rising to give a standing ovation to welcome speaker Li to the stage. His total life story and performance was amazing and humble, and no doubt totally memorable for all those who attended.
Highly publicised Major Martina Jewell who spoke on ‘A Peace Keeper’s Perspective’ was a most interesting speaker surprising many particularly with her incredible experiences in war and the dreadful life threatening injuries she suffered.

Other speakers covered a variety of entertaining subjects including Women in Leadership, Membership of Rotary, The Rotary Foundation and Beyond.
A highlight of the Conference was the DG’s Dinner on the Saturday night featuring a Golden Theme. It was most enjoyable with a delightful meal, great 60’s music and entertainment provided by the Chinese community including Dragon dancers and children’s special dance an important influence in the Bendigo community. It was a great opportunity to mix with Rotarians and friends from District 9500.

Major Kathleen White has revealed a clever talent in her poetry as a summary of Conference events. What more can I say! The following was especially written for members by Kathleen.
T'was Marie D from Adelaide West became our District Gov,Ambassador for Rotary's pledge of sowing peace and love;and Ashleigh's fine committee recommended Bendigofor this year's conference for our District, nine five double-O.
T'was Marie D our district gov became our golden girl,And with her fine committee whose minds were all a-whirlwith hosts of inspirations which all converged, creatinga golden opportunity with all participating.
T'was Denis White our Salvo Truckie loaded up his truckAnd safely drove to Bendigo - but Ashleigh and Carol were stuckin Bordertown for seven hours, but bravely undeterred, made car repairs and on they went, on country roads preferred.
Young Geoffrey French came all that way, chauffeured by his son Geoff Beer and Barbara caught the bus, so keen to join the fun;So everybody travelled in a Nissan, Ford, or HoldenDetermined not to miss out on the opportunity golden.
The nicest restaurant in town was Thursday night's venueAnd welcomed there to tasty fare by Presidential SiouxAnd Doctor Zaki joined us with his lovely wife SamarThe R.I. representative, from Bunbury afar.
On Friday all was looking good, set up and well contrivedAnd in the very nick of time, Henry and Helen arrived.Amidst the sound of dynamite, exploding out she cameWho is the lady in the cart? Marie is her name.
Golden time - golden rhyme

So Marie made her fine debut in miner's trolley cart,Propelled by crusty miners, George and Peter looked the part. The conference was under way - we learned of Rotary waysof building peace through service, throughout the coming days.
Now Bill and Kym with earplugs in were buzzing all aboutWhile flashing Henk's photography kept him on his toes no doubt; The golden voice of David S, calling the crowd to attentionIn golden jacket glittering ~ his jokes deserve a mention!
The speakers were amazing - after every one a giftof South Australia's finest wine along with Marie's kiss. And all our club who made the trip, who journeyed from Adelaideagreed that it was well worthwhile, the effort that we made.
The ballet girls on Saturday and speaker, dancer Limade us laugh and made us cry; born in povertyhe learned to dance and overcame the sadness in his life,Then to his great advantage, he found an Aussie wife!
The great event on Sat'day night was the conference dinner. The food was just so excellent we wished it made us thinner! The dragons were fantastic and we danced the night awayto music of the sixties, just right for John and Kay!
When Ian and Jan took to the floor they made an elegant pairand Heather and Alan waltzed away with almost equal flairAnd Marie in her golden dress with courageous Ken, her love, was shining in her happiness, not bad for a District Gov.
But all that glitters is not gold, for Heather sparkled blueAnd friendly-like she chats to folks and lends support to Sioux. And Werner also came along, he made our President grinAnd nearly 50 years married, are George and his lovely Lyn.
T'was David in his gold bow tie, resplendent to be seen, and super busy every day, Bill Marles and good Kym Green; What stirling effort made by chairman Ashleigh Lorraineand Carol and the rest of the team who worked for gold to gain.
And Adelaide West got gold again, for the bulletin's fine printJohn Madigan deserves our praise for giving us this glint. And Kay was justly proud of him and enjoyed the whole eventAnd Kathleen, the truckie's offsider, was also glad she went.
And Jan enjoyed the swimming pool, quite early every day,And Trina backing David thought she'd get a holiday?!So Jill and Peter were impressed with speakers very skilledTo tell their story, share their lives, we all were very thrilled.
For Rosemary and Ian, it was their very first timeto attend a Rotary con-fer-ence, (I'm running out of rhyme)And Alan our statesman gentleman, in spite of a little scarewon well deserved accolades, he thrives on Nan's kind care.
T'was Marie and the conference team, too numerous to mentionwho organised this great event, with excellent intention;A golden opportunity, and yes, there was fun aplentySo thank you one and all - I mark it twenty out of twenty!
