NAIDOC week Art Competitions At the end of last term Inverell Sapphire Community of Schools Naidoc Competitive Art Exhibition opened at the Inverell Town Library. The opening was attended by a large number of students and their parents with many Ross Hill students from Kindergarten to Year 6 being recipients of prizes. The judges, Ms Eleanor Harrison-Binge and Mrs Nikiah Harris were both delighted with the high standard of artworks. They were particularly impressed with the quality of the artists’ statements , that addressed this years theme of “Voice, Treaty, Truth. Lets Work Together For A Shared Future.” The exhibition will continue for viewing until Friday 26th July, so please take the time to enjoy the creativity of young artists from the Inverell district. Anxiety Disorders Signs of Low Self Esteem in children Signs to look for: Has difficulty accepting praise

as well as criticism Unenthusiastic about going to

school Cheats or lies if it means losing a game or

doing poorly Controlling or bossy personality

Aggressive or bullying

Blames others rather than owning Responsibility for own behaviour Gives up at first sign of failure

Regularly makes excuses As many children with learning difficulties often lack self confidence and have low self esteem. It is imperative for parents and teachers to be conscious of the signs so that they may become more confident and self assured. These signs or responses could be revealed on a daily basis or may be displayed infrequently in specific circumstances. The school environment is where a child with learning difficulties will exhibit low self esteem. With some children it is quite obvious that they lack self esteem and are happy to express their frustration and feelings by remarking “I am stupid” or “I do everything wrong”. For others the signs are not so obvious. They can differ from one person to the next. In many instances, people with low self esteem believe they lack ability or intelligence. With this mindset it will be impossible for them to succeed and their outlook will be fixed with homelessness. To avoid further failure and embarrassment, the alternative is to learn coping strategies. Everyone, adults included, use different forms of coping strategies, the difference being that a person with good self worth will use different strategies that adjust and guide them to advance but a child with low self worth will use self defeating strategies. It is very unlikely that a person with low self esteem will seek help by themselves. It is important that they have caring adults who will help them to get assistance.
