The students came back ready to learn and excited about all the great events and activities that are coming up that will create a great Spring here at Rosland. There were a few times, however, that students needed reminders about school expectations, keeping our hands to ourselves, and working without distracting others. Please ask your student(s) to review school expectations with you and ask lots of questions. Not only will this help them remember our rules, but it is great conversation and is practicing the skill of main idea and supporting details. We are very close to meeting our school-wide reading goals, so please keep your students completing their nightly reading minutes and thank you in advance for signing agendas and/or turning in reading slips each week. We are really noticing the extra time that students are spending completing their reading minutes is really paying off in their classwork and reading assessments. April and May will be very busy with lots of learning, but it is also when we will be completing our State Assessments in the areas of English Language Arts, Math and Science (5th grade only). Be watching your classroom newsletters for dates and details. If you have any questions about the testing, please feel free to contact me or your child’s teacher. Happy Spring to everyone! S What a great first week back!

Mrs. Williams

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Blue Ribbon campaign began in 1989 as one woman's tribute to her grandson. She tied a blue ribbon on her car antenna to symbolize his bruises after he died at the hands of his mother's abusive partner. KIDS Center brought the campaign to Central Oregon in 1997 to raise awareness of the epidemic of child abuse in our community. In addition to awareness, the Blue Ribbon Campaign also focuses on educating individuals and groups on how to better protect children in their lives, and in our community from child abuse.

Almost 50,000 blue ribbons along with educational materials will be distributed throughout the community in April. People are encouraged to wear a blue ribbon to show support for the awareness and prevention of child abuse.

Please contact the kids center for additional information and training opportunities.kidscenter.org or 541-306-6062

Responsibility is the character trait of the month for April. We will be discussing choices, consequences, fairness and caring this month. Please ask your student about their discussions at school and how they are being responsible.

MORE INFORMATIONUPDATES AND REMINDERS

We would like to remind all of our families that our campus is tobacco free. If you participate in after school activities at

Rosland, please help us remind those using our school that there is not supposed to be any tobacco in the parking lots or fields. Dogs are not allowed here either. We have had a couple of incidents where we have found cigarette butts and dog poop out at recess and although there was not a serious incident, our students are usually the first to find such items. Thank you for your help in keeping Rosland safe and clean!

PARENT HANDBOOK REMINDER Food Products in the Classroom

Research shows that children who regularly eat healthy do better in school, are more inclined to be physically healthy , have fewer weight problems as adults, and have a more positive social and emotional outlook on life. We care about your children and, like you, want them to be at their absolute best. Please remember this when packing lunches from home, as soda pop, candy, and excessive amounts of chips are not encouraged. Also, when it is your child’s birthday please consider a healthy alternative to cupcakes; such as, fruit/veggie trays, peanut butter and crackers, cheese sticks, yogurt, etc. or even a non-edible party favor instead. Your child’s teacher can give you some ideas if you need them. Food products for classroom functions must be prepared by a licensed production kitchen or bakery and should be brought to school in a sealed container.

Good job to our Battle of the Books Team! They did a great job representing Rosland! Thanks to our families that made our first year competing such a success!

Volunteer Appreciation week is April 11th through April 15th. We want to thank all our volunteers for their help to get us through the year! Please watch for your invitation to breakfast on April 13th. We hope you

can stop by and let us spoil you a bit.
