BOOK RETURNS Can everyone have a really good hunt for any Te Mata School books that may be hiding somewhere at home? We would like to have them all returned by Monday 5th December so we can complete a book audit.
VULNERABLE SCHOOL ROLL Last Friday morning we held a special meeting to discuss the placement of our Year 6 Students for next
year. The criteria we used in no specific order were;
- Academic ability
- Sporting ability
- Maturity
- Age
- Social Groups / Relationships
- Strength of both teachers, Kathy Briant and Haylee Moeke
At 8.30am we felt confident that we had made the best decisions and we had started crafting a letter to all
Year 6 parents.
By 9.30am we had 4 new in zone students enrol for the beginning of 2017. Two of these students are Year
7 instantly changing the number of Year 6’s who will learn in Room 4 with Kathy Briant.
Due to the roll being so vulnerable we are not going to announce which students will be in which class for
February 2017 as our roll is changing weekly. Please trust that we will make the best learning decision for
your child.

Digital Devices for all Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students in 2017 The world is becoming increasingly digital; our students live in a world where they need access to information in different ways. Our initial thoughts were to restrict use & protect our students from the wider world and its dangers. As we have listened to parents experiences with what their children ‘get up to’ on social media sites such as Facebook, accessing material that is not age appropriate etc, and a recent professional learning session with John Parsons on Cyber Safety we feel that educating our students is the best way forward. We have visited and networked with other schools, in particular Ngatea, Netherton and David St and have seen the way their students are so confidently using technology to enhance their individual learning. We need to teach our students how to use the internet for learning and for all the other positive learning opportunities it provides; while simultaneously teaching our students to be responsible, discerning digital citizens who can make informed choices about what they engage with. The question is not whether we should have computers in the school (we already do); the question is how we can give our students access to technology in the most practical, cost effective & sustainable way into the future. In 2017, Te Mata School will be introducing 1 to 1 computers for our year 5 to 8 students. This is in line with the curriculum and guidelines that the Ministry of Education are expecting from us. After a great deal of consideration & research, we have decided the official digital device for students will be the HP Chromebook (pictured below). It is important that all students have the same model, as we are unable to technically support BYOD options. Price? The price for one device, including charger, will be $396.75 (including gst). When? Our aim is to have all students from years 5 to 8, working off their devices from Term 2 of 2017 (1st May 2017 onwards). How about siblings? In the case of having more than 1 child in the 5-8 year classes, Te Mata School will make available a second device for your second child to use whilst at school. Then you can take the one device that you own home for the two siblings to share. Where do I purchase them from? All purchases will be made directly with PC Hardware in Hamilton. P C Hardware are our IT providers who we work very closely with. They provide us with an excellent service. We have negotiated a best price deal due to the quantity ordered. PC Hardware is located at 237b Kahikatea Drive, Hamilton (07 847 1177). If you would like to purchase one for your child’s Christmas gift please contact [email protected] at your earliest convenient, otherwise you have until the 1st May 2017 to purchase or enter into a payment plan (see details below). Please note that the school will not be administering any purchases of Chromebooks for students, all purchases need to be made from PC Hardware. If you would like to take up the payment plan option, when you go to pick up your device at PC Hardware you can complete paperwork there and take your device home. Warranty? All HP Chromebooks come with a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty. Questions & Queries? We will be holding a parent meeting in Term 1, 2017 around digital fluency so we can answer all of your questions in one meeting. We would appreciate it if you could please keep your questions for this forum as it will be specifically structured around this topic.
Payment Options 1 upfront payment $396.75 (incl. gst) OR
Payment Plan Option 1st part payment $132.25 due on 1st May 2017 2nd part payment $132.25 due on 1st June 2017 Final payment $132.25 due 3rd July 2017

Room 3 are walking Mt Karioi as part of their school camp. As this is such a special walk we have decided to invite Room 4 students to join Room 3 for the day. This will probably take us a little longer than our typical school day. Hence, we need support from all our parents. We are incredibly impressed with the fitness levels and readiness of our students to walk to the summit of Mt Karioi. On our training days we naturally find ourselves splitting into two groups. The two groups are identified on the following sheet. Ultimately we want all our students to enjoy walking to the summit with their friends and feel the satisfaction of such an achievement. This list is going into this newsletter to help us organise the logistics of organising transport, adult student ratios and allow us to meet the health & safety requirements. Room 3 Students and Parents – Already have complete permission slips
Students and Parents at Camp Raglan will be provided a packed lunch.
Students and Parents walking up Te Toto Gorge will be picked up from Camp Raglan in one of the Raglan Area School vans and dropped off at Te Toto Gorge car park
Students and Parents walking up Ruapuke Side will load into parent vehicles and drive to Ruapuke car park
The return time will be confirmed once we have definite numbers
Room 4 Students and Parents – Need to complete permission slips
You will all need to bring a packed lunch
Transport plans can be organised once we have definite numbers All students will need;
Appropriate footwear Appropriate shorts/tights and t-shirt Sun hat & sun screen A back pack that is easy to wear when walking up Mt Karioi.

All students will be issued with their new sun hat once they have all be named and expected to wear them when outside in the sun.

OUR OAK TREES
As part of our Health & Safety procedures
the Board of Trustees had Matt Henderson a
qualified Arborist to come in and check all
our trees and prune any that needed
attention. Some limbs were removed and
tidied up. Our stunning, prestigious Oak tree
beside the Dental Clinic only has a few more
years left in her. Please take the time to
enjoy her while she still stands so proudly.
SOME HISTORY…
Not only an inspiring place of learning for
the students, Te Mata School has beautiful
park like grounds which feature three old
oak trees planted by senior students. Tim
Brown recalls Arbor Day 1955 at Te Mata
School when as a senior student, he helped
dig the holes for the lower 2 oak trees which
were approximately 0.5 m high when
planted. When Tim went home later that
day and relayed the planting story to his
father Joe Brown, his father then
remembered that his older sister, Maida
Brown, had helped plant the single oak tree
at the rear end of the Dental Clinic. This
would have been around 1914, which makes
this oak tree approximately 102 years old.
Thank you to all the wonderful P.T.A
helping hands. The Lion’s Club dinner
was a huge success and made the
school a HUGE $800 profit. It was so
lovely to work alongside our parents,
and yet again make wonderful
connections with others in our
community! The food was awesome
and your effort was amazing! Thank
you. Xx Jacqui
A mighty oak tree is merely a small acorn that held its ground, took root,
and then flourished.
