Goossen Industries' Versa Vacplayed a role in the grounds crew's"gold medal" performance at Atlanta'sOlympic Stadium.
The traffic in preparation for andduring the opening ceremony of the'96 Olympics, plus the weather, caused the sod to die. New sod hadto be laid over the entire infieldwithin a 24-hour period. Once thenew sod was in place, the GoossenVersa Vac was called into service toclean debris off the new turf andcomb the grass, adding the finishingtouches and helping to "bring homethe gold."Goossen IndustriesCircle 119 on Postage Free Card

THE FRONT LINES,...,
Stories from the Front LinesBy Dave Ashman
One of the many benefits ofjoining an organization likethe STMA is interaction with
the membership. Having the abilityto meet other professionals who arefacing similar concerns and chal-lenges provides a great opportunityfor personal development. It isalways reassuring to learn you arenot the first person to face a particu-lar problem. The concept of thisdepartment is to share anecdotesfrom members of the sports turf com-munity.From Milwaukee
Harry Gill was a founding mem-ber of the STMA, a sports turf man-ager par excellence and a tirelesspractical joker. Mike Schiller, DaveMellor and others who knew him wellremember him as a person whoalways got the job done and never letyou forget to playa little every day. Ifyou did forget, he had a special way ofreminding you."One if by Land, Two if by Sea"
In 1986 after a storm droppedseven inches of rain on Milwaukee,WI, during a ten-hour period, thegrounds staff at County Stadium sawtheir playing surface literally underfive feet of water. That was the goodnews. The bad news was that aBrewers' game was scheduled for thisstadium in less than 48 hours. Mostturf managers would have updatedtheir resumes or called the local sui-
cide hotline. Harrybuilt an ark.

wasn't an ark - it was a small boat.Well, actually, it was a pad from theoutfield wall. Dave Mellor shares hispicture of a stadium employee floatingin front of the dugout. To this daysome are not sure if this wasn't one ofHarry's relentless practical jokes ortruly an act of God.
How did Harry get the field readyto play in less than 48 hours?According to legend, Harry willed thewater away. According to highlyranked sources within the depart-ment, the problem was created by afreak combination of events. If seveninches of water in ten hours was notenough, the grade of the stadiumparking lot actually channeled therunoff water onto the playing field. Asmall creek adjacent to the stadiumoverflowed its banks and directedmore water into the area. The finalblow was that the storm drain line forthe stadium was blocked with debris.
Once the blockage was removed,

the drain system worked to perfectionand the field was cleared. After a fewhours, the only standing water was inthe dugouts. The bulk of the work con-sisted of replacing wall pads and otheritems that floated away. The field wasready on time, and the game wasplayed without incident. Most peoplenever knew about the great flood of1986. The only proof is in a picture onDave Mellor's wall.
I would like to thank the followingpeople for their contributions to thisdepartment: Suz Trusty, STMA Nat-ional; Mike Schiller, STMA president;Dave Mellor, County Stadium; andSteve Guise, Valley Crest Landscape.
If you have a story or anecdote youwould like to share, write it down(include your name and phone num-ber) and send it to the following:Ashman & Associates, 3164 NorthGreenbrier Road, Long Beach, CA90808.0

Chandler Arizona Parks DepartmentChandler, Arizona
rAJ handler Arizona selected Primavera bermudagrass for all fifteen of the new soccer fields they seeded in 1994 and~ 1995. In addition, they are using Primavera on all the city parks and grounds.
According to Kris Kircher, maintenance coordinator, they have used common bermudagrass before but had problems withallergic reactions among the players. Then they tried Mid-iron bermudagrass but is was very susceptible to pearl scale. The third variety they tested was Primavera. Kris was really impressed with its quick germination and establishment. Itstayed greener longer in the fall and greened-up earlier in the spring than any of the other seeded types they tested.Primavera also was resistant to pearl scale, so their problems were solved.
Kris, and his crew of four, were able to convert old cattle corrals to excellent quality soccer fields. The San Tan SoccerAssociation plays on the fields nine months out of the year, and with the use by other groups, there are soccer gamesalmost every day of the week throughout the entire season. The quality of the playing surface is excellent throughout theyear. The number of injuries and loss of players have been greatly reduced with the dense turf they are able to producewith Primavera. It has been stated by numerous authorities that Chandler has the best soccer fields in the Phoenix area.
The work done by Kris and his crew is impressive, especially whenone realizes that it was done on a minimum budget.
