Roncalli High SchoolRoncalli High School
The mission of Roncalli High School is to educate in the Catholic traditions of spiritual growth, life-long service, and academic excellence.
Manitowoc, Wisconsin
Our school was named after Angelo Giuseppe
Roncalli in 1965, shortly after his death in 1963. Roncalli,
in his time called Good Pope John, is remembered most
for convening the Second Vatican Council, from 1962—
1965. The world was in a time of war, specifically the
cold war between the U.S.S.R. and the U.S.A. The
Vatican felt that the world needed a pope that would
keep quiet and wouldn’t cause much trouble, but
Roncalli drastically changed the Church in his time as
pope. His hope was that the Second Vatican Council
would be the beginning of a new Pentecost for the
Church.
The Catholic Church became more involved in the
political and justice issues of the world. The celebration
of mass was drastically changed, from a priest speaking
Latin with his back to the congregation to a priest
speaking the common language of the people while
facing his congregation.
The Catholic Church became much more united
with itself and other faiths of the world. Pope John
XXIII helped change what was a traditional Church into
a modern and involved Church. His work in Catholicism
and his love of youth in the world is what led the people
who established Roncalli High School to name our
school after him.

The Life of the “Good Pope” Consult not your fears but your hopes and dreams. Think not about your frustrations but about your unfulfilled
potential. Concern yourself not with what you have tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.

Roncalli High School celebrated Pope John XXIII’s canonization
with a bit of fun and a bit of prayer. Throughout the week, religion
classes were based on learning about Roncalli’s life. On the Friday
before the canonization, there was a prayer service and a presentation
for Pope John XXIII. Lunch was Italian with chicken parmesan as
the main course and Italian ice as a treat for the students and faculty.
On the Saturday before the canonization, Roncalli held the
annual Pierside Auction and dedicated it to St. John XXIII. Roncalli
High School continues to honor St. John XXIII at the end of every
prayer by saying the words that will forever be etched in our minds
and our hearts: “St. John Baptist de LaSalle, pray for us. St. Francis,
pray for us. St. John XXIII, pray for us.”

Pray for Us!
Father Carl Schmitt, a Roncalli alumni, celebrated a special
mass before the Pierside Auction.
All students received a special St. John XXIII
medal to celebrate his canonization.

CoaCh Rux’s notes:
There are never enough words to describe the
excitement that a state tournament appearance
brings to the team and community. Every team that
makes it to Madison needs to overcome some type of
adversity, and this team was no exception. We lost
two key players in Sam Scheer and Alex Deets prior to
the season with football injuries which changed the
entire team dynamic. When you consider how many
players had to change positions and roles in a short
period of time, it makes you appreciate the resilience
this group displayed. To end your season in the Kohl
Center is an accomplishment few teams get to
experience.
Our team motto this year was, “It's not about
you.” The players understood that to achieve great
things and overcome the adversity we experienced,
we were going to need to have a team-first attitude.
That attitude was solely responsible for the success
this team experienced.
Thanks to all the coaches and players for their years of hard work and dedication!

“I went to Roncalli, I liked Roncalli, I will miss Roncalli. What a school! I could not ask for more.”
Here at
Roncalli we are blessed
with a custodian staff that goes above
and beyond the call of duty. Whether sweeping the
hallways, cleaning bathrooms or collecting garbage, they make
sure our school is clean. They are more than just custodians—they are a
part of the school. Mr. Naidl and Mr. Prange are really here to help. They
are both willing to help students in any way they can, from opening the
school doors to helping a student get into their locker or even walking a
student who has stayed late to their car.
Beyond the Halls: The Custodians
of Roncalli By Brett Giesen and Anthony Marchlewski
Mr. Prange has been working as a
custodian at Roncalli for almost 10
years now, and Mr. Naidl has been a
custodian at Roncalli for a total of
three years.
Both Mr. Prange and Mr. Naidl
worked somewhere else before
becoming custodians at Roncalli. Mr.
Prange worked at several places before
becoming a custodian, which included
working at auto places like Autotec and
Body Tech. Mr. Naidl worked in the
construction industry, but decided to
become a custodian because “my body
was telling me to retire and find a job
less physically demanding, so here I
am.” Mr. Naidl felt that his knowledge
of construction would help him with
the maintenance that is constantly
needed. Mr. Naidl also said that “My
wife and kids attended this school. This
is my chance to say I did, too.”
Mr. Prange says the most difficult
part of the job is teaching the kids on
work study how to clean in the
summer. Mr. Naidl isn’t a fan of
cleaning bathrooms. He says, “I have
to admit that at first it was difficult to
say, I just cleaned this yesterday and
today it needs to be cleaned again.
But, I’m sure if you ask my wife, I
make bigger messes at home.”
There is always plenty going on at
Roncalli, which means there’s also
plenty of work for our custodians.
One night, Mr. Naidl was working by
himself in the atrium when he heard
the elevator go up all by itself. It was
spooky! But, Mr. Bill solved the
mystery the next day by explaining
that the elevator is programmed to
operate when not in use to cycle the
oil.
Both custodians agree that
working at Roncalli has its benefits.
Mr. Prange says his favorite part of
the job is in fall when everything
looks nice and clean for the new
school year. Mr. Naidl says he enjoys
working with the staff and students.
He said, “The atmosphere in general
and the courtesy and respect I see in
so many of the students makes me
feel younger just being here.”
Mr. Prange (left) and Mr. Naidl (right) take pride in keeping our school
clean and helping students.
Class of 2014
I want to be...
When I was a young girl, I had my life all planned out. I proudly wanted to be a tooth fairy and go to the
academy to study all the basics; flying, shrinking down to size, etc. As I grew up, I sadly realized that wasn’t an
option. Even though I know my childhood ideas were not realistic, I’ve learned that it’s always important to
dream big. Our senior class has many happy memories of their time at Roncalli and ambitious paths which
include everything from education to the Army. Congratulations to the Class of 2014! May God bless you on
your journey!

“Over the years there have been so many great shows and wonderful casts and crews and this show was no exception. I will miss the theater dearly because I love it and the many people that have put forth their time and effort to express their own love. The hardest part of directing and saying goodbye is indeed the letting go.”
Making the Sets
The Ark used in this year’s musical was also used in the last two musicals at Roncalli.
It was Javert’s suicide bridge in Les Misérables and part of the castle in Camelot.
Animals, trees, etc. were made all by

from Mr. Woodcock.

Every year, Roncalli’s Student Government holds
various fundraisers to help those in need. One such
fundraiser is Mr. Roncalli, a spirit competition for junior
and senior guys, where all proceeds are directly given to the
Domestic Violence Center and The Haven, a local homeless
shelter for men. In this competition, the contestants try to
outdo each other in various events to prove that they have
the most spirit, which is always an entertaining endeavor!
This year, the theme of the show was Winter Olympics,
inspired by the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The
contestants—Zach Berres, Chaz Kersher, Liam Casey, Jon
Roberts, Nathan Miller, and Chris Zhang—each
represented a different country. The foreign language
department, consisting of Mr. Baranczyk, Mrs. Seizert, and
Mrs. Pritzl, came together to judge the events. Scores were
given to the contestants for the first three events, but the
last event was mostly just for fun so that the judges could
take advantage of the extra time to tally up the scores.
Between the events, there were guest appearances from
various groups to give the contestants a breather after
completing in the vigorous rounds of the competition.
After the first event, Jean Wolfmeyer’s dancers preformed a
rhythmic tap routine, and the Roncalli Stool Fools
illuminated the stage with a light show once the spirit
portion had concluded. In between the last two events,
Lukas Peterson accompanied by Hayden Boettcher
serenaded the audience with a few songs. It’s always
amazing to see the talent of all these groups and how well
they work together!
To start the show off, each contestant took a turn
walking on stage with their escort to introduce himself and
give a short biography. After this, the contestants got their
game faces on and the competition began. The first event of
the evening was Winter Wear. The contestants “strutted
their stuff” in an outfit from their winter wardrobe while
one of the hosts told the audience why the contestant chose
those particular articles of clothing. Both Zach and Jon
showed off their pride for their country with warm clothing
reflecting their country’s culture, while Chaz, Chris, Liam,
and Nathan showed off their warm outfits of choice.
Once the clothing portion was over, the Spirit
competition commenced. In this event, the six contestants
let their school spirit shine through songs, a poem, a chant,
and reflections on their time at Roncalli.. This was the most
important event because it showed the contestant’s school
pride, which is what the Mr. Roncalli competition is all
about.
Next up, the contestants brought their most noteworthy
talent to the table and tried to outshine their opponents in
the talent portion of the competition. The contestants did a
variety of things including: singing, wrestling a ferocious
bear, displaying their remarkable athletic skills, performing a
slant poem, and dancing. It was definitely one of the most
exciting events of the evening because the audience had no
idea what to expect.
Wrapping up the competition was a final round that
changes year to year. In the past, it’s been a game show,
Minute to Win It, or a comedy improvisation session. This

year, however, it was Winter Games to fit the
theme of the show. Contestants had to do

hockey then followed with jumping hurtles,
traveling on a scooter while trying to knock

concluded with a 20-second dance show to a
