Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

At the parish picnic, parents were always on the lookout for their kids, making sure they were safe, fed, clean, and well-behaved. Even in a crowd, parents seemed to know exactly where their children were. Without a second thought or any effort, they could anticipate to the moment when their kids would be hungry or tired or ready to go home. Parents loved their children and knew them well. Jesus’ concern for the people was like that of a parent. He himself was tired and he went to a deserted place, but the people followed him. He took pity on them and began to give them what they needed: His message of God’s love. He knew they were tired and hungry and he wanted to give them food and rest. Like a good parent, he took care of them and gave them all he could give. God will never abandon us. He will never forget us. His love is so great the he gives us himself for food, his life for our sins, and his blood for our salvation. Without a second thought, God empties himself so that we are filled with all that is good and holy. God’s love conquers all sin and doubt and raises us up to him. He knows us and loves us well.

STM Band pictures are in and can now be picked up in the school office.

The Pastor’s Page July 31, 2005 “YOU THINK IT’S HOT IN HERE?”

God love him. Whenever it gets ferociously hot, my memories usually take me back to my younger days growing up in Griffith and attending St. Mary Church. Our pastor at the time was Msgr. Leo P. Hildebrandt. Many of you, I know, knew him. Now for those of you who may not know, St. Mary Church in Griffith, for the longest time, was not air conditioned. That was a source of consternation for many of us. It made it even worse since, running the length of both sides of the church, there were rows of evergreens. Those bushes, while delightful to look at, were a source of shade for that dreaded pest, the mosquito. Since it was so hot during late spring, summer, and early fall, the church windows and doors would be open during Masses. We would not only swelter in the heat and stick to the varnished pews, but the blood-letting by the mosquitoes would be followed by a night and day of scratching. One of Monsignor’s themes at this time was: “You think it’s hot in here? What do you think hell must be like. If you don’t like it now, better be good so that you don’t end up there!” I do not like heat. Heat and humidity are definitely not my friends! But they do take me back to Msgr. Hildebrandt’s caution to behave, to be good. What things — or people — remind you that you definitely want to avoid that place of eternal punishment and, instead, live with God in Heaven? Think about it. About them. And put their reminders into practice. Do good. Avoid evil. Encourage others to do good. Go to confession on a regular basis. [Hey folks: “regular basis” really means once a month or so (remember, confession is a great source for grace!) and not once every other year or so.] Together we are on the way to the Kingdom. With God’s grace, may we realize our greatest dream — eternity with Him!

THANK YOU TO OUR ADVERTISERS If you look at the last four pages of our parish bulletin, you will see the people and businesses that make it possible for us to publish our weekly bulletin. Now that you know that, take another look at the last four pages. Look good. Do you need anything that our advertisers have to offer? Kindly patronize their businesses as a way to say to say “thank you” for their generous support. I am sure they would appreciate it. Thank you sponsors!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A man walked into the street and managed to get a taxi immediately. He got into the taxi, and the cabbie said, "Perfect timing. You're just like Dennis." The passenger said, "Who?" "Dennis Glickman," said the cabbie. "There's a guy who did everything right. Like my coming along when you needed a cab. It would have happened like that to Dennis every single time." "There are always a few clouds over everybody," said the passenger. "Not Dennis," said the cabbie. "He was a terrific athlete. He could have gone on the pro tour in tennis. He could golf with the pros. He sang like an opera baritone and danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano." "Sounds like he was something, huh?" said the passenger. The cabbie went on to say, "He had a memory like a computer. Could remember everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole neighborhood blacks out." "Wow, he's some kind a guy, eh?" said the passenger. "He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams, not like me, I always seem to get into them." "Mmm, not many like that around," said the passenger. "And he knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good and never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished, too." "An amazing fellow," said the passenger. "How did you meet him?" "Well, I never actually met Dennis," said the cabbie. "Then how do you know so much about him?" inquired the passenger. At that, the cabbie sighed deeply and answered, "I married his widow."

PRAYER BY

ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO

It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view. The Kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,

it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work.

Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the Kingdom always lies beyond us.

No statement says all that should be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith.

No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit bring wholeness.

No program accomplishes the church’s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow.

We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.

We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.

This enables us to do something and to do it very well. It may be incomplete,

but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter

and do the rest.

We may never see the end results, but that is the difference

between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders,

ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future that is not our own.

Amen.

We are all equally responsible to make sure that we have priests in the future. They are our keys to heaven. Won’t you come and pray with us?
