February Rain Report

From the Prez!

I want to thank those people who worked to set up/take down and demon-strate/show at the International Gem and Jewelry show. We have already had 4 show up to our January meeting from their visit to the InterGem show. YEA TEAM!! Jonnie has 3 pages of people that want to learn what we were show-ing at the show. (meaning, more people to join) I will call that a success! We actually had 12 people Friday and Saturday doing Demonstrations/Selling. Thanks again to everyone who came to help the club show off.

For those of you who did not make the January meeting, we had Dr. Mark Carter give his presentation of “Fishing in Wyoming”. I will be honest, I wasn’t sure how that tied to us, when I was told the topic. But who knew Rockhounds could go “fishing” in the dry lake bed!

Dr Carter also brought along a CD that was put out by the park service about the area. We played that while we ate dinner.

And the best was at the end of the talk we had a special raffle and he gave away a fish rock. (not this one, I still can’t get over dying with your last meal in your mouth. That’s a bad day)

It Pays to attend!!

Safety at the DGMS Hobby Shop is perhaps a little lax on enforcement but that does not mean the you don’t need to be aware of what the hazards are that are involved. There is the obvious hazard from dropping heavy objects (rocks and tools) to eye hazards around spinning objects like the grinds and saws. Perhaps you are not aware of other hazards like rock dust, cutting oil, electrical safety, and oily rags to name just a few. Being aware of the safety is your responsibility and pointing this out should be our obligation. When you become aware of an un-addressed safety hazard it is your obligation to report it to the Shop Supervisor.

There are common sense rules like foot wear that will prevent damage to toes and feet, but also wearing long trousers to prevent cut to legs. Wearing watches is both a hazard and expensive as oils may contaminate the instru-ments. Wearing long or loose shirts or blouses can get caught in spinning wheels both on Grinders and saws. Long hair should also be tucked into a cap for spinning hazards but also for your general cleanliness. Aprons are available and they do help keep some of your clean but strings and edges need to be properly protected to prevent spinning mis-haps. Safety glasses or face shields are always a very good idea. Dust masks should be worn to prevent breathing in rock dust and cutting oil from your material and others material as ventilation is poor in the shop. Gloves should be worn if possible but whether you wear them or not you should wash, scrub and rinse often when dealing with even mildly toxic materials. It might be advised to wear plastic sleeves for some of us.

Not to cause alarm but to make you aware I came across this resource on Ganoksin http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/lapidary-safety.htm

Lapidary Work Safety Notes from The Jewelry Workshop Safety Report Copyright © Charles Lewton-Brain 2005

“Hazards: Stone dusts as well as organic material dusts can be very hazardous, even deadly. Tver and Anderson note silicosis and silicotuberculosis are noted as occupational disorders for people who cut and polish stones (169). Oils, lub-ricants, water, and soaps can foster dermatitis. The water in lapidary cutting systems often sits for periods of time and can grow fungus and molds. Lapidaries have even gotten Legionnaires' disease from this. Diamond-saw cutting of rough material can produce oil mists and chemical exposures. Oil mists from cutting gemstones can form aerosols that are breathed in and can cause severe lung injuries (Crumley 128). Chemical: Oils used for cutting saws. They may contain nitrosamines; which McCann notes cause cancer in animals (AB! 447). Rocks are chemicals and some materials are dangerous, especially as cutting residues. "Cutting fluids may also cause dermatitis" (AB! 447). Do not use antifreeze as a lubricant or coolant-it is dangerous (Crumley 124). Physical: Silicosis. McCann lists the following stones as containing the free silica that causes silicosis: quartz (which is silica), granite, sandstone, brownstone, slate, jasper, opal, onyx, amethyst and soapstone. There may also be silica in diabase and serpentine. In addition, "soapstone, serpentine, and greenstone often contain asbestos as a contaminant. Inhalation of asbestos can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the chest and abdominal cavity), and asbestosis" (Health Hazards 41). Dusts. Flying chips can damage the eyes. "Electric tools produce large amounts of dust" but "hand tools can slip" (Rossol 251). Electrocution is a danger. Rossol notes the occurrence of "white fingers" disease or "vibration syndrome," caused by continued use of electric tools, which cuts off the blood supply to the hands (and possibly to the feet) (251).”

Amethyst Amethyst, the gemstone believed by ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, also is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. Through-out history, the gemstone has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and nu-merous cultures. English regalia were even decorated with amethysts during the Middle Ages to symbolize royalty. It has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numer-ous cultures. Amethyst is purple quartz, a beautiful blend of violet and red that can found in every corner of the earth. Historically, the finest amethyst were found in Russia and were fea-tured in much royal European jewelry. Today, while Brazil is the primary source of this gem-stone, fine material can be found elsewhere, especially in Zambia.
