Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue Newsletter May - July 2012

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

I met today with a gentleman from a group, Animals - Abused and Abandoned. The group is out of Dallas, Texas and funds

veterinarian care for non-profit animal rescue organizations. The meeting and the subsequent agreement to fund some of our

veterinarian bills got me thinking (which can be scary).

Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue is a small organization and we’re working VERY hard to succeed for another year. We have a

special place and, while we all know that it’s special - we wonder if anyone else knows. This gentleman from Texas had heard

of us though, knew how great our little “shelter on the corner” was and offered to help us. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone else

did the same?

Yes! It would be very nice. My guess is that it is not going to work that way. My guess is that we are going to have to work for

every dollar that we bring in. So…….here is my appeal.

Your Board of Directors is working to produce a Corporate Ask packet. As of the date of this newsletter, it should be close to

completion. What we need from our volunteers and our adopters (and all their friends, kin, non related people you meet on

the street….etc. etc.) are contacts and help in soliciting organizations for Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue to partner with.

Denver is known as a community that is good for business. Many of these businesses are actively involved in volunteer and

community service. Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue needs to partner with these businesses and we need your help to do it. If

you have a contact that would be helpful to our great shelter, please get either with myself at [email protected],

another board member when you see them, or Terri Mahoney, shelter manager.

Thanks and I’ll see you at the shelter!

TAGAWA GARDEN CENTER

ROCKY MOUNTAIN FELINE RESCUE

THANKS YOU!!!!

To the employees at Tagawa Garden Center and especially Michelle Martin – thank you for your continued

generosity and support of our shelter and the cats who call us home – till their forever home comes.

Your special holiday wreaths, holiday decorations, garden supplies and gift cards have really helped to make our

benefit events a success. Your employees have been so generous with their monetary donations in memory of Grey

Kitty, who passed away suddenly last year.

You do so much for our shelter and for many other animal rescue groups.

Every year you host The Grey Kitty’s Birthday Celebration and Pet Rescue Event, benefitting RMFR and many other

animal rescue groups. You have created so many fun ways to help animal rescue groups over the years: Holiday Gifts

for Pets and their People, Tagawa Give Back Program, Cats with Gratitude, Tagawa Garden Center Benefit Pet

Calendar and Simply Beautiful Container for Simply Purr-fect Cause. Some of these events continue, while others no

longer exist. However we are very grateful for all your past and present generosity.

News! News! News! (or should it be Mews! Mews! Mews!)

GOT STUFF??

Wondering what other marvelous events are coming up? Well you sure don’t

want to miss our Garage Sale on Saturday, May 5th 2 blocks west of Wash Park

at Ogden Street, at 1001 E. Louisiana Ave, Denver 80210. It will be held from 9

AM until 3 PM, there are great deals to be had! If you’ve gone overboard on

the spring cleaning and now have tons of empty space that you need to fill up,

we can help you with that! We will need several volunteers to help with

setting up this event on Friday, May 4th & the morning of the 5th, plus several

to help with running the sale and then cleanup afterwards. If you have any

questions, would like to sign up as a volunteer, or have items you would like

to donate to the garage sale, contact Eva at [email protected].

RESTAURANT NIGHT!!! YEA, EATING OUT!!

Eat for the RMFR! On Sunday, May 6th, Trattoria Stella will be hosting a restaurant night for the shelter. Come on

out, have a great meal, and 10% of your food & beverage totals will be donated back to the RMFR. The restaurant is

located at 3201 E. Colfax Avenue. This is the perfect excuse to put those leftovers back in the fridge & enjoy a night

out!

RMFR OLYMPICS (just kidding)

THE FIRST ANNUAL HERDING CATS 5k WALK FUN RUN

Come one, come all, the RMFR will be holding its first fundraising walk and fun run, the Herding Cats 5K on Saturday,

May 26th! Come on out, rain or shine, to Stapleton Central Park at 8801 E. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Denver 80238.

Participants will have a choice of two courses, a short one (just over a mile and a half) and a long one that is the full

5K. Your $30 registration donation gets you a special Herding Cats & 30th birthday T-Shirt, entry in a raffle drawing

for a chance to win some great prizes donated by many generous local businesses, and free light refreshments

before and after the walk. You can choose to walk or run the course, but we won’t be timing anyone, this is just a

fun day out in the sun, nothing too serious! By the way, you’ll also be able to participate in our Poker Run along the

course for an additional chance to win some great prizes! Never heard of a poker run before? Check out our event

website for details on what on earth a poker run is, registration, and even sign up to volunteer to help at the event!

We need lots of volunteers to help with setup, cleanup, and poker run station attendants. Visit the event website at

http://www.RunningGuru.com/Website/HerdingCats for more information! If you have any questions, please feel

free to contact Amanda Dutka at [email protected].

4

Special thanks to all of our early sponsors, donors, & vendors participating in Herding Cats!

I hope you’ve been keeping an eye on our 30-30-30 Champions!

As of this writing, our 8 Champions have helped the RMFR raise over

$3,500! There is still plenty of time to sign up to become an RMFR

Champion and help us celebrate the incredible milestone of turning

30 years old in 2012.

Please contact Amanda Dutka at [email protected] with any

questions or if you need help signing up!

Something to help you beautify your yard and give back to the shelter! Print it out, use it and use it again. The bees will thank you! Your eyes will

thank you! Above all, the kitties will thank you, as only they know how! Huzzah!

Some of our wonderful RMFR Cats waiting for adoption:

APRIL WAS VOLUNTEER MONTH!

Rocky is a relative newcomer to the shelter. He survived for over a year (that we know about) living outside because of two fine ladies who still visit him every day. When he first arrived, Rocky was very shy. Today, he resides on the cages soaking up the sun and waiting to be petted and loved on. He is a chunk of a cat with an orange coat and sweet eyes and will make a quiet home a very happy home. Shadow Black – a soft and sweet girl that suns in front of the window in the purple room. A laid back black cat with soft fur and yellowish eyes, she will let you pet her for awhile and will then leave for greener pastures. Her previous parent lost Shadow Black when she lost her home. We are looking for someone who will help her find out what it means to be a special cat to a special person again. Handsome Hank is laid-back and mellow. When in the mood he loves to be petted and to sit in your lap. Hank is an FIV+ boy, who has remained robust and healthy over the years. FIV has no effect on humans, nor on non-feline species like dogs. It is transmitted between cats via penetrating bite wounds. Cats like Hank tend to live good long lives.

The Board of Directors and Staff at Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue want to say

THANK YOU

to all of our volunteers.

We started out the month with a bang! Linda Szumny (oddly enough, a volunteer

herself) put together a great bulletin board with pictures of people doing the best job in

the world – petting cats. We hope you got to see it and some of Linda’s other work!

She has “bulletin boarding” down to an art!

We have done several projects at the shelter in the last two – three months to improve

the shelter itself. There has been a kitchen remodel and the back room has almost been

completely repainted and (one wall) re-paneled. This resulted in a much cheery, much

less smelly two areas. I guess that is what happens when you live in a cat house.

As this newsletter goes to print we are looking forward to seeing all of the volunteers at

John Collins United Methodist Church for our desert celebration.

Please join us: April 28 12:00 – 2:00 pm

John Collins United Methodist Church

2320 S. Bannock, a few blocks NE of the shelter

Do you know anyone who would like to volunteer at Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue? Easy! Have them give Kevin a call or an email. Even if they are allergic to cats, there are opportunities, so volunteering is a YES proposition!

PLAY. VOLUNTEER. YOU WIN. THE CATS WIN.

Weekly RMFR Bingo Game

Every WEDNESDAY 7:30 PM until 09:30 PM

Turn Bingo of Arvada

5390 Sheridan Blvd, # A Arvada, Colorado 80002

Admission is $12 per person and $1/pack.

A common question heard around

the shelter is, ‘What wine would

the cats of RMFR recommend if

they could talk?’ The answer to

that question is at:

www.benefitwines.com/rmfr. It

appears Snow White prefers

Sauvignon Blanc, while Panther

wholeheartedly endorses a nice

Pinot Noir. Order a bottle or two

today for those upcoming special

events, and $7 of each bottle

purchased goes back to the

shelter.

THANK YOU FOR FUNDRAISING SUPPORT Thanks to all of you, our wonderful volunteers, sponsors, and donors, our Empty Bowls dinner

this past January was a huge success! Were you abducted by aliens and unfortunately, couldn’t

attend? Don’t worry, this was such a great event that you can put it on your calendars for next

January, so be sure to avoid any aliens around that time.

Huge thanks to all of our raffle prize, soup, beverage, bread, dessert and bowl donors! The event

wouldn’t have been possible without you!
