Dear Families, Our staff had a very productive and informative professional learning day last Monday. Sarah Hill, from Lumos Learning, led us through the Design and Digital Technologies curriculum and shared many fun and challenging activities our teachers can plan for students to help build their knowledge and skills in this area. We look forward to seeing some innovative use of technologies over the coming months.
It has been a busy couple of weeks for our students. Our Interschool team had a great day in the recent carnival. Our students showed great sportsmanship and behaviour and enjoyed the competition. Our Year 5 & 6 students had a fun day at SciTech last Wednesday, and the Year 5 students walked over to the Naragebup Environmental Centre last Thursday to learn all about caring for our waterways and the local environment. This week, we have the Water Corporation and Sercul coming in to present to our Year 4 and 5 students on landcare and keeping our waterways clean.
Our before & after school clubs started this week. We are sure that our students will engage in some interesting out-of-school learning and have some fun too! Thanks to our teachers for making these opportunities possible!
Children’s Book Week
This week is Book Week! Our staff and students really look forward to this week every year. This year’s theme is “Reading is my Secret Power”. You will notice classes will have their door decorated around a favourite book. Our Book Parade will take place on Tuesday at 1:20pm, straight after recess. Everyone is welcome to come along to the quadrangle to watch. Following the parade, we will move out to the oval for ‘Books on Blankets’. Families are welcome to bring along a blanket, picnic, and their favourite book to share with their children. Over the week, teachers have organised a daily ‘Guess My Book’ competition where clues are given and the first three classes to guess the title and author will win a book for their class.
Art/STEM Makerspace
We are thrilled to see our Makerspace behind the Arts block finally enclosed and finished. The area is mostly waterproof and secure and we look forward to our students being able to use this for both Art and STEM learning. We plan to have some more powerpoints installed and storage for our STEM materials. What was once a space that was unused, it now looks fantastic and makes the most of the area.
Fathers’ Day Celebrations
The P&C are holding their Fathers’ Day stall next week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. All classes are rostered on to visit the stall and make a purchase for their dad if they wish. On Wednesday afternoon, from 2:30pm – 3:30pm, we will have Fathers’ Day Activities in the Undercover Area. All dads, grandads, uncles and mums can come along with your children to have some fun in a variety of activities that our staff will be running. We look forward to celebrating the special man or father figure in your child’s life with our students.
Opti-MINDS
Good luck to our three teams of Opti-MINDS students who will perform in the Regional Finals at Curtin University on Saturday 31st August. Opti-MINDS is an inclusive team challenge which empowers participants to think, create & communicate. Opti-MINDS is a creative problem solving event for teams of seven participants who are required to solve demanding, open-ended Challenges from one of the following categories: Language Literature, Science Engineering, and Social Sciences. The Opti-MINDS Challenge is an opportunity for all those with a passion for learning & problem solving to showcase their skills & talents in an exciting, vibrant & public way. The judges are professionals chosen from all areas of education, the arts & industry. They are thoroughly trained to enable them to assess the creative performance & technical aspects of the presentation. Many thanks to Hayley Cull, Kirstie Fitzgerald, Kaye Henning, Bronte Hunt, Bob Cuder, and Georgia Mills-Poilly who have trained our teams after school this term to prepare them for the final.

125 Year Celebration
In February 2020, our school is 125 years old! We would love your great ideas and contribution to making this an awesome celebration for our whole school community. If you love event planning, gathering historical data and photos, have any stories to share, or anything at all, please come and join our committee. Lea Bruijn, our Deputy Principal, is leading the Organising Committee and coordinate the planning. The first meeting is on Monday 2nd September at 2:45pm in the staffroom. We hope to see you there!
Attendance It is really important your child as at school on time. Our classrooms are open at 8:15am for children to come in and get ready for the day. Every class has morning activities for students to complete to reinforce concepts they are learning. Regularly arriving late to school makes an impact on their learning as the table shows. Every minute counts, every day counts!
Kind regards,
Jacqui O’Donnell Principal
Dear families,
As our school is embracing sustainable practices we are moving to digital consent forms for excursion, incursion, class and sporting activities. We will no longer be sending out paper copies to reduce our carbon footprint. We will be using the CareMonkey platform for families to submit their consent forms online.
If you have not yet completed a CareMonkey profile please do so ASAP so that you can access the online forms. This will save you loads of time completing forms and sending them in as you can submit them online, wherever you are, and there is no chance of them being lost in the depths of your child’s school bag!
If you require assistance to do so, please come in to see Emma or Claire in the front office who would be delighted to help you out.
Thank you for your Support.
We are also introducing QKR! Qkr is a secure and easy way to make payments to the school from your phone. You will still be able to pay the school via our usual methods however, Qkr is now our preferred payment method and we encourage you to embrace this option as we attempt to minimise the amount of cash being handled by your children and the school.
Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any queries.
