2016 Event

Schedule

August2016 Rockin’RoundtheBlock 3

Now in its’ 18th year, Rockin’ Round the Block, organized by Northwest Motor-sports Association in cooperation with

downtown merchants and presenting sponsor, Weston Buick KIA GMC draws close to 400 stock, modi  ed and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles into historic downtown Gresham.

Held the second Saturday in August (August 13, 2016), the show, which is a fundraiser for Mt. Hood Community College, includes some of the ho¢ est rods and coolest customs this part of the country has to o£ er. To date the event has raised

$153,000 for the school’s Automotive Tech-nology Program scholarships.

Early Saturday morning cars begin rum-bling into town and by noon things begin to look like a scene from the   lm classic, “Ameri-can Gra¥ ti”. Rock ‘n Roll music   lls the air as more than 10,000 spectators ̈ood into local shops and restaurants.

e Chamber of Commerce estimates that the car show brings more people into downtown Gresham than almost any other annual event. is year the Gresham Farmer’s Market will once again join the show by selling produce, artwork and other goods. e market will be located at 5th & Miller. Besides eating and shopping opportunities, there are door prizes, trophies, free children’s games, face painter, clown, vendor booths, an old fashioned street cruise and cars, cars, cars!!! All makes and models are wel-come, whether completed or a “work in progress”.

Nostalgic Street Cruise Brings Back Memories

By late a ernoon on Saturday a crowd will begin to form along Main Street to view a slice of Americana as one by one the slumbering bevy of beasts come alive and empty out the parking lots

to line up for an old fashioned cruise down Main Street.Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, teens and yes…even toddlers clap and whistle as the parade of cars rumbles by. As the day draws to a close, there’s a sense of nostalgia in the air and a feeling of community spirit that sometimes gets lost in the hustle and bustle of our big city lives. SPE-CIAL NOTE: e cruise will begin around 4pm a er the 3pm Awards Ceremony (show entrants ONLY).

MHCC has four full time faculty who are passionate about their jobs. e Automotive Technology Programs at Mt. Hood Community College have been changing people’s lives for more than forty years. Building these programs took a lot of work on the part of very commi¢ ed instructors, but it’s paid o£ big time. When the automotive students graduate, they not only have a two-year transferable Associate of Science Degree in automotive technology, they also have a full year of automotive dealership experience, hundreds of hours of factory certi  ed training credit, plus 95% of them are employed. Students have a choice of enrolling in one of the following programs o£ ered at MHCC: Ford ASSET, Chrysler MCAP, Subaru U, IMPORT (Individualized Mechanical Program of Repair Technicians) and MLR (Maintenance and Light Repair) . Recently MT Hood Community College hired two graduates of the automotive programs to be instructors. Steve Johnston was hired to develop and instruct a maintenance and light repair program. Eric Garvey was hired to instruct the MCAP, IMPORT, Subaru-U second cohort of students. Mr. Garvey comments, “Not only am I an instructor of the Chrysler MCAP, IMPORT, Subaru-U program, being a graduate is an amazing feeling to give back to a program that has given me so much”. Each of the four Automotive Technology instructors realize that articulation with industry was the key to building their programs. So Jerry Lyons and

Steve Michener started contacting manufacturers and dealerships to develop a solid system where the college provided the training, manufacturers provided new vehicles and special tooling and the dealerships provided internships for students. All these components result in a well trained, ready made work force. ese former students achieve success for themselves and their families, but also success for their dealerships. Many eventually become mentors to new students who enter the Automotive Technology programs. MHCC instructor’s advice to high school students who are considering the MHCC Automotive Technology program…”Take as much math, reading, writing and science classes as possible.” To   nd out more information about the four Automotive program and to request an application package contact Steve Michener at: [email protected] or Jerry Lyons [email protected] or Steve Johnston [email protected] or Eric Garvey [email protected] Seventeen years ago Northwest Motorsports Association established a scholarship fund for the Mt. Hood Community College Automotive Technology Program. During that time they donated $153,000 of the proceeds from the Rockin’ Round the Block car show to fund student scholarships for tuition and tools. When you register your car, buy a ra ́ e ticket, or a tee shirt at the Rockin’ Round the Block event, you are helping someone make an automotive career come true.

“Mann” with a MissionA Salute to Community Heroes

(Continued on page 6)

Sta£ Sargent Chris Mann is a man with a mission. When he returned from his   rst tour in

Iraq with the Oregon National Guard he became aware of the tremendous needs veterans, as well as active military personnel and their families faced. He decided he could stand around and feel sorry for them or he could do something to help change their circumstances, so he looked around and found the Oregon Military Support Network (OMSN) OMSN was formed about 12 years ago by a group of military chaplains who were also concerned about assisting military families in practical ways. “I decided to get involved right about the time another veteran support agency was in the headlines for failure to appropriate the majority of their funding to actual services to vets. When I read that OMSN is a strictly volunteer organization with no paid sta£ or o¥ ce space, and that about 75% of their funding goes directly to programs and services, I knew I’d found the right organization to support,” smiled

Chris. “And their support is extended to all branches of the military”. Chris has since become a passionate supporter serving as the group’s executive director for the last two years. “It’s actually a pre¢ y simple process,” says Chris. “When needs arise such as home repairs, groceries, clothing, or Christmas toys I just post the need on an email blast to approximately 500 supporters and people begin to contact me with ways they can help”. Sargent Mann gets a li¢ le misty eyed when he describes some of the projects community groups have taken on. “People’s generosity always overwhelms me,” he said as he removed a hanky from the pocket of his fatigues.

Quickly dabbing away the moistness forming in the corners of his eyes, he talks about a recent need for groceries for the family of a deployed soldier. I put out an email expecting to receive a few bags of necessities for the family; instead we delivered 16 bags of groceries to a

family in desperate need to feed their children. “ en there are companies like Keller Williams Realty who sent 100 employee volunteers to complete three veteran service projects. “ ey went to an older disabled vet’s house and power washed his deck and built a landing area at the base of his wheelchair ramp to help him be¢ er maneuver around his property”. If you want to say “thank you for your service” to a vet there are several ways you can help. Request that your email address be added to OMSN’s list and receive notices as needs arise or call Chris directly to   nd out how you or a group you’re involved with can help. OR you can purchase ra ́ e tickets to win one of three ba¢ ery operated children’s cars at the Rockin’ Round the Block car show.
