...Fashion is a language spoken by every living human being and is progressively becoming a key part of global tourism and significant contributor to some national GDPs. It may be flawed to call it a universal language since its interpretation and expression across the world borders vary but the fact that it’s a universal mode of expression remains a fact... The Native & Vogue project is a 3 day fashion week (sept. 20th - 22nd, 2013) that primarily brings together already established fashion designers from Nigeria and beyond who will showcase their wares.

For three days come September 20-22 this year, Port Harcourt will host the maiden edition of ‘Native & Vogue Fashion Week’. Native & Vogue is put together by Neo Mantra, Frank Osodi’s Bunor Creazioni and Allure. The show is being sponsored by the Government of Rivers State. An exciting destination, Port Harcourt will play host to fashion’s most powerful names in the country and the continent.

Already former Miss World, Agbani Darego, has identified with the project and will be the key anchor person for the event. Seven top Nigerian designers have been signed on while international designers from South Africa are expected to showcase. Sixty local and international models will strut the runway while 10 up and coming designers will vie for the chance to become the ‘Native & Vogue Designer of the Year’.

Without doubt, Port Harcourt will brim with a different kind of fervour; one that will place the state in positive light while engaging its restive youth population.

I commend the governor’s foresight in seeing the massive potentials of making Port Harcourt a fashion capital – one that is easily attainable with the amount of work and planning being put in place to ensure international standards at the event.

Do plan to be there. It’s a must-not-miss event.Enjoy your week!

Sequined accessories add that extra little touch of zest and can be worked into your everyday look if worn in neutral metallic colors like black, gold, silver, and bronze. For evening, amp it up by choosing bright colored or multicolored sequins in bold shades of blue, pink, red and more.

To glam up your party style and get glamorous this season, wear sequined pieces with ultra-luxe and rich materials like silk, velvet and lace. When combined together these three top holiday dressings shine at night

Sequins can often give off a dressy or more formal vibe, but a trendy and stylish way to wear sequins this season involves pairing this evening staple with something a little bit more casual and relaxed like denim. Wearing a shirt with a shimmering miniskirt or a sequined embellished blazer or jacket with skinny jeans is an effortlessly cool way to rock this sparkling fashionista favorite. Not only are these looks relaxed, cool and comfortable, they can take you from day to a fabulous night out with just a simple switch of footwear.

If you’re planning to wear standout sequins that make a glimmering statement in a party perfect frock, opt for minimal jewelry or forgo it entirely. You want your sequins to be shining in the spotlight and not competing for attention with oversized shimmery statement accessories. Sequins have enough sparkle to keep you dazzling all night long, so any jewelry worn should be kept clean, simple and classic.

Look for your favorite ways to wear sequins in shimmering shades like silver and gold or unexpected bold blues and bronzes. Stick to neutral colors to pair with your sequined piece, colours in the white, black and or tan family will suit your sparkle more.

Always stick to wearing only one shimmering sequin piece per outfit, as you don’t want an overdose on sparkle and end up looking like a disco ball. Wearing sequins should be effortless and should be worked into your outfit in a way that adds to it and not overpowers your ensemble.

Skirts, whether pleat-

it hides a multitude of body problems. Remember how-ever, that if you are short, your skirt should not be

shorter than knee length.

• Accessorize skirt with a pair of stilettos, sling back or pumps.

• Wear with a lady like blouse or turtle neck tucked in. You can also wear with a blazer-long or cropped.

Blue is slowly but surely showing the fashion industry that it deserves a spot in the limelight. It is a color that exudes vibrancy in a rich way. Electric blue is sure to flatter all skin tones and can compliment neutral colors such as beige and also flamboyant colors like burgundy, fuchsia pink or even pine green. For women that also have an absence of this bold pigment in their closets, or those that thought it was not a go-to shade that can be easily paired with other colors, feast your eyes on these selected blue inspirations.

For a casual everyday look, add lots of jewelry, big sunglasses and an eye-catching bag. Don’t be intimidated to play with different designs and even patterns, casual chic doesn’t need much effort and yet it looks simply adorable.

F ashion is a language spoken by every living human being and is progressively becoming a key part of global tourism and significant

contributor to some national GDPs. It may be flawed to call it a universal language since its interpretation and expression across the world borders vary but the fact that it’s a universal mode of expression remains a fact.

Since the 1940’s when fashion began to take centre stage and make noticeable contribution to national economies, the world has focused its attention on the west and most cultures have in varying degrees

adopted the western style; Africa for a long time remained a silent participator at best. This trend has fast begun to change as fashion consumers all over the globe have started to look at African fashion differently. It is growing, gaining world recognition, acceptance and usage. African fashion and its related activities has become a highly yet silently exported and vibrant part of the local economy and it is gaining momentum.

Of the over 70 million highly spirited youths in Nigeria for instance, it is safe to say that over 3 million Nigerians are actively involved and gainfully employed

by various fashion endeavors including textiles, designing, sewing, make up, fashion accessories, distribution etc.

The evenTIt is in recognition of this fact that Neo Mantra, an intellectual property development company in partnership with ALLURE Magazine and Bunor Creazioni, a renowned Nigerian based fashion design, consultancy and model management firm headed by Frank Osodi, have teamed up and empowered by the Rivers State Government to produce the Native & Vogue Port Harcourt

International Fashion Week holding, September 20th to 22nd, 2013.

The aim of Native & Vogue is to foster the growth of this seemingly silent but vibrant industry by providing structure and grand economic purpose which would ultimately benefit all stake holders especially the residents in the hosting state, Rivers.

The Native & Vogue project is a 3 day fashion week that primarily brings together already established fashion designers from Nigeria and beyond who will showcase

their wares. This will serve as a base and spring board for the upcoming and aspiring designers to cease the opportunity for a career launch after undergoing a short tutelage under the already established designers. The upcoming designers that perform above a benchmark will have the opportunity to boost their career opportunity by furthering their skills in prestigious fashion schools. The entire three day period will be filled with fan fare and activities that will draw attention to and bring goodwill to Rivers State. Some of expected activities include: Meet

& Greet, Fashion Shows, Exhibitions, Workshops Allure Style Awards and Fashion Competitions.

ObjecTivesThe Port Harcourt International Fashion Week is a platform that is meant to create and develop local fashion and its related crafts in a magnitude that will benefit the community, positively influence education, culture, community services, tourism as well as the economy. The Rivers State Government has since recognized this opportunity and has taken steps to actively engage the youth by launching this unique platform.

This will serve to fulfill millennium development goals by reducing poverty due to jobs and opportunities creation and ultimately place the Treasure Base of The Nation on the International Fashion Map.This will come with an array of opportunities which will prove the government’s efforts in alleviating poverty and ultimately buttress the “Rivers of Opportunities” slogan.

At the end, the event would have successfully gathered participants from the Rivers State Government officials, corporate bodies, diplomatic communities, celebrities from the social circles, local and international fashion industries, glamour industry, local and international fashion and showbiz writers and media.

naTive & vOgue Technical Team:The key resource person of The Native & Vogue project is Mr. Frank Richard Osodi, a man with over 20 years experience in the fashion and modeling industry. Some of his participatory and organizing accolades include: South Africa fashion week, Vukani Fashion Awards, Mozambique Fashion Week, Africa Fashion Week London, PAHBA Awards, Miss Africa U.S.A, Atlanta and Barbados and a host of other fashion fairs all over the world.

Frank is the brain behind the highly successful annual international fashion show BLACK, BOLD AND JAZZY and also dressed the first black African to win the miss world crown, AGBANI DAREGO.

In addition to his efforts, other renowned designers and close associates of the project include: Ituen Bassey, Femi Adebayo Jones, Lanre Da-Silva, Momo Couture, Mai Atafo, Paul Van Zyl – the international guest designer. The event will be done in partnership with Red Dahlia Production, a South Africa-based Company renowned for seasoned fashion and pageant show management and execution.

It must be stated that the key anchor person/headliner will be the very beautiful daughter of Rivers State, first African ever to win the Miss World beauty pageant and has continued to be a source of national pride ever since. This is the very elegant Agbani Darego (OON). She has embraced the project and given her total support to the execution of this project mainly because of the opportunities it provides the youths in Rivers State especially.

The Native & Vogue fashion week is the standard fashion week you may be used to but the organizers are giving opportunity for aspiring models between 18 to 25 and aspiring designers from 18 to 40, all whom must be natives or residents of Rivers State to participate and share the runway and limelight with these established designers.

Do not miss out on these rare opportunities. Visit www.nativeandvogue.com or www.facebook.com/native.vogue for more information. The project organizers have also released a phone number for enquires for those interested, 08096303350 and have also stated that those who do not qualify for the competitions but want to participate and exhibit their wares are very welcome to do so.

SENSATIONAL EYESWhen it comes to impact, the eyes have it. They’re intriguing, expressive, dynamic and as unique as the woman behind them. We can enhance the impact of our eyes with colour, starting with identifying their shapes.

DEEP SET EYES You have deep set eyes when the brow bone is more noticeable than the eyelid. To bring visibility of the eyelid forward, avoid dark eye shadows in the crease (between eyelid and brow bone).HOODED EYES This shape is endowed with a well defined lash line and brow bone. Highlighting shades should be applied on brow bone and inner corners of the eyes. Midtone shades on the crease and hooded area to help the lid appear to recede. Blend. Apply darker shades from the centre of the eyelid to the outer corner, be careful not to apply on the entire lid, it will make the eyes appear smaller.CLOSE SET EYES They are less than one eye width apart. To make them appear farther apart, use highlighting shades on brow bone and lid, most especially to the inner corner of eye.

NOTE:• Highlighting refer to the lightest shades, typically very sheer. Midtone is a medium shade, which can be matte or shimmer. The darkest colour is the accent, used to define and contour.

• Shades depend on the skin tone. Midtone shades on a bronze skin may be an accent on a beige skin.

TEA RINSE FOR NATURAL HAIRTea Rinse is washing your hair with tea bag extracts. The caffeine penetrates the hair follicles to take their effect. Doing the tea rinse also adds shine to the hair. It strengthens the hair thereby reducing breakage.

You can put a concentrated tea bag extract in a spray bottle and spray it all over your hair. Keep it in the hair for 10 to 30 minutes and rinse out laterThe second way is to soak the tea bag in a kettle. This method requires more water than the previous. Make the water lukewarm and slowly pour over your hair after washing with shampoo and conditioner

As you know, different tea extracts have different functions on the hair. It is advisable that you know the effect you want the rinse to have on your hair before you choose what to use.

• BLACK TEAThe caffeine in most teas will help stimulate hair growth. The more the caffeine, the higher possibility it has to stain/colour your hair. This is more applicable to black tea so you have to be very careful as too much caffeine can stunt hair growth. The best guide is to dilute as much as possible if you want to use Black Tea. • It adds

Sculpted shoulders are often one of the most sought-after looks. Great shoulders can make or break a sleeveless shirt, dress or even bathing suit. Shoulders are indeed an interesting muscle in that they not only look good, but are quite functional in ever day life, as well. We use them throughout the day, from stretching upon awakening in the morning, to lifting laundry and our little ones, to carrying groceries, to pulling the covers over our heads prior to sleep. Strong and developed shoulders will also help prevent injuries when engaged in sports, whether playing tennis, golf, swimming or skiing.

In order to achieve great success when trying to sculpt your shoulders, be sure to perform exercises that are designed to target this muscle group. In addition, eating healthy and drinking plenty of water is very important to your success.

Here are ways to sculpt your shoulders:

One of the most important ways that you can work to sculpt your shoulders is by performing exercises that are designed to increase muscle mass in this area. Like other muscles, sculpting the shoulders will not happen overnight; in fact, it can take months or even a year to get your shoulders to look the way that you want. In addition, remember that when doing exercises to sculpt your shoulders, don’t get stuck in a routine of performing the same exercises over and over. Instead, try to vary your routine. This will keep you interested and keep your muscles guessing. When your muscles don’t know what to expect, they have to work harder, and the results that you are striving for come more easily.

In addition to strength training, it is important to eat right in order to achieve high success when it comes to sculpting your shoulders. By eating plenty of lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you will decrease the amount of fat on your body, and your shoulders will look more lean and sculpted.

Drink plenty of water when it comes to sculpting your shoulders. Research has found that adequate hydration can help in the excretion of certain toxins that aid in fat retention. Therefore, by flushing out these toxins, you can get a longer, leaner look in no time at all. Remember my motto drink at least 2.25- 4 litres a day.

Push Ups! Yes, you heard right. And while it’s one of the longest standing and most basic exercises, by doing the right variation and the right number of reps, your shoulders, thighs and arms will transform before your very eyes. * 3 sets of 12 resting no more than 60 seconds.

this was one vanity fest worth seeing. I mean, I’m unrepentant when it comes to supporting people to live well when you work hard for it; style, in particular, to me, is non-negotiable. You’ve just got to look good in my books; but to turn a children’s school to a style, position and wealth war zone is just the height of irresponsibility to me.

Narrow sighted and shallow behaviour that these women are unknowingly inflicting their children’s lives with! With how absorbent of parents’ ways and their environment that these beautiful gifts from God are, these women unknowingly fill them up with this nonsense. It doesn’t exhibit till the kids are well in their teens and early adult years and by then, it’s too late to uproot. Then, the same parents start to complain about the selfishness and vanity of their kids and the lack of interest in serious business or work! What a joke! Anyway, I vent and digress as usual; Lol…

I decided to heed Anita’s advice and donned designer duds head to toe, in order to adequately ‘represent’, lol... Black, knee length Donna Karan dress, black Prada platforms, blue Chanel boy bag, diamond and sapphire jewellery, Cartier pasha watch and Fendi bracelet were all on full duty. My hair was pulled back tight and my big, faux bun attached to it. Overall, I looked sleek, polished, uber successful and aloof.

Ha! Anita laughed with joy when she saw me. “This is your territory”, she said. “You’re familiar with this terrain!”

“Big difference, though,” I quipped. “I can act this but I don’t live like this. I would hate to be this aloof, snobbish and materialistic... Plastic! Just a bit of heat melts it, you know.”

“Yes, well put,” said Anita. “Why live so fake? Annoying thing is that most of them are nouveau riche whose husbands just made some money and they have just started getting exposure to wealth and its trappings. Just moved up and then acting like they don’t even know where Akowonjo is anymore. Lol!!

“Serious matter...,” I said, laughing with her. “Anyway, you look the part too, so let’s go.” Anita had on a cream coloured silk blouse with enhanced shoulders, chocolate brown pencil skirt, chocolate Louis Vuitton platforms in monogram canvas, matching monogram canvas sac plat (handbag) and yellow and white gold jewellery.

We decided we would take her brand new Ford Edge Limited edition and off we went. There we were, dressed to the nines, for a school event, to boot! What a downward, material spiral our society is in, I thought. Sad, sad, sad!

ESCAPADESStyleof

My dear colleague, Anita, had invited me to her daughter’s ‘graduation’ from primary school. Infinitely amused at the whole idea of a grand ‘graduation ceremony’, followed by a ‘prom night’ to boot, I’d agreed to go along with her. Plus, she’d regaled me with tales of the excesses of several of my acquaintances and friends who had children in the school and I’d thought it would be amusing to go take a look. Lol! PLUS, I had a relatively light work schedule that day...

“Cack up big time o.” she’d said. “Don’t think it’s a casual thing. Be in one of those your incredibly superior styles from head to toe and have your ‘board meeting’ expression in place - unreadable.”

“Ah ah! That bad? Isn’t it a children’s school? A primary school?” I’d asked incredulously.

“This one’s with a difference o,” replied Anita. “The moms there have turned it to a style

war zone, car war zone, handbags war zone, my husband is so and so war zone, my position in society is so and so war zone ...”

We dissolved into fits of giggles and just laughed so hard. What is going on! What have we become! On and on, we lamented thereafter then, came to the conclusion that

I am 29 years old and, by the grace of God, still a virgin. Something happened to me recently which I will like to share with you. It was my birthday and I went to a known photo studio for a photo shoot. When I got there, the owner of the studio was very nice and after he learnt that it was My Day, he became more caring; which I appreciated.

After I had taken some shots, he requested some minutes from me to attend to some customers which I agreed to, not knowing that it was all a set up. When the customers left, I took more pictures and afterwards, he began to make some illicit moves towards me which I didn’t take

seriously until he really got to me and I found myself unable to resist his moves but couldn’t explain why.

I am usually not approachable in that sense except that it was my birthday. I was excited about the day and in my excitement, all my guards were down. I believe this was a move this man who seemed distinguished on the outside but was different on the inside had also perfected. For him, it was just a

daily ritual with female clients that come into his studio for photo shoots.

I felt so bad after the whole thing because I am not that kind of person. I am a child of God, a role model to so many teenagers in my church and I consider it a privilege that God can point me out to the young ones (male and female), letting them know it is still possible to remain a virgin

physically, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually until one’s wedding night.

I am aware that those who want to live right these days are tagged as hypocrites and those who don’t want to are praised and advertised in the media as role models for our young ones who are going through some fierce battles for their souls. But has Jesus not said

that a time will come that those who want to live right will be persecuted? It’s no wonder that so many good people are giving up and becoming, not just bad, but very bad.

LETTERS...

olishProfessionalTHE

fessionalHi readers!

Last week I promised to share two particular responses on our article with you. We published Mr. Gbenga Kadiri’s last week. Here, we continue with the second response that came from Miss Nonye Ikeh. She has this to say:

“The problem that Maclurren

obviously has is the impulse with which opinions are asserted and

the lack of control over such impulses. Everyone wants to prove a point regardless of the chaos it might lead to; hence the unproductive and chaotic work atmosphere caused by lack of right attitude or conduct.

They should rather channel the

training (which is the bone of contention) to professional grooming first before any other course that may be significant to their organisation. The truth is that no matter the level of knowledge gained on the services/products being provided by them, if the right attitude is not displayed by the professionals employed to provide those services, they are not in business”.

Interesting responses really!Once more, I deem it

necessary to point out that the very common factor that span across the two responses (last week and this weeks’) and the others that were sent to me is ATTITUDE.

The bone of contention here (I am sure we reckon) then, isn’t

really that of diversity but intolerance for one another’s differences within the office environment, which in turn resulted in lack of peaceful/conducive work climate.

Liz Jaswiec, author of ‘Eat that Cookie’ says that “there is real vibe in those places where people value gratitude and graciousness, and when these are missing, it is equally evident and counter-productive.”

Again, the attitude that depicts one’s way as the right and only way would always create a discordant atmosphere than a conducive one in the work place.

REASONS TO DETOX

• YOu’ll gET fEvER cOlDS When you do a proper detox, minor infections such as colds, sore throats and flu are less likely. Fruit and vegetables are the best ways to get high levels of vitamin C, beta carotene and other antioxidants in your diet, and research shows that people with high intakes of these nutrients have fewer sick days than others.

• YOu’ll gET RiD Of blOATiNg Swallowing too much air and eating in a rush are the most common causes of bloating. During a detox, it is essential that you learn to take your time and sit down to eat. Chewing thoroughly and eating slowing will help reduce the amount of air swallowed with food. Also avoid fizzy drinks as they introduce more unwanted air. Try plan water and drinks. Bloating is sometimes a reaction to certain foods. Cutting out or reducing common culprits such as yeast, wheat products, bran cereals or vegetable from the Brassica family (e.g. cabbage, broccoli or cauliflower) may help.

• YOu cAN lOwER YOuR blOOD PRESSuRE Eating more fruit and vegetables can lower blood pressure. This is due to the high content of potassium, which helps regulate the body’s fluid balance. An Italian study found that 81 percent of people with high blood pressure who started eating six servings of fruit and vegetables a day reduced their medication by half.

• YOuR hAiR will ShiNE The vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables do wonder for your skin, hair and nails. A healthy diet trackles beauty problems from the inside, improving the rate of hair growth, cell renewal and collagen formation.

• YOu’ll ENjOY bETTER hEAlTh Numerous studies have linked a diet rich in fruit and vegetables with a lower risk of sickness and diseases. According to the American institute for cancer Research, eating at least five servings of fruit and vegetable each day could prevent at least 20 percent of cancer cases. Research from Kings College London found that people who eat at least two apples a week are up to 32 percent less likely to develop asthma than people who eat fewer apples. And a university of survey study found that people who eat the most fruit and vegetables have stronger bones.

Dear kathy,This is just an appreciation. The hardest thing for me to give up was my soft drink, i was addicted; that was before i did your 7 days detox; but after the detox, i feel won-derful, the craving is gone and i lost almost 4kg; my skin is amazing – i am so happy; i thought i couldn’t leave without my regu-lar soda, but now oolong tea has replaced my soda for good.
