...Fashion is a language spoken by every living human being and is progressively becoming a key part of global tourism and significant contributor to some national GDPs. It may be flawed to call it a universal language since its interpretation and expression across the world borders vary but the fact that it’s a universal mode of expression remains a fact... The Native & Vogue project is a 3 day fashion week (sept. 20th - 22nd, 2013) that primarily brings together already established fashion designers from Nigeria and beyond who will showcase their wares.

For three days come September 20-22 this year, Port Harcourt will host the maiden edition of ‘Native & Vogue Fashion Week’. Native & Vogue is put together by Neo Mantra, Frank Osodi’s Bunor Creazioni and Allure. The show is being sponsored by the Government of Rivers State. An exciting destination, Port Harcourt will play host to fashion’s most powerful names in the country and the continent.

Already former Miss World, Agbani Darego, has identified with the project and will be the key anchor person for the event. Seven top Nigerian designers have been signed on while international designers from South Africa are expected to showcase. Sixty local and international models will strut the runway while 10 up and coming designers will vie for the chance to become the ‘Native & Vogue Designer of the Year’.

Without doubt, Port Harcourt will brim with a different kind of fervour; one that will place the state in positive light while engaging its restive youth population.

I commend the governor’s foresight in seeing the massive potentials of making Port Harcourt a fashion capital – one that is easily attainable with the amount of work and planning being put in place to ensure international standards at the event.

Since the 1940’s when fashion began to take centre stage and make noticeable contribution to national economies, the world has focused its attention on the west and most cultures have in varying degrees

adopted the western style; Africa for a long time remained a silent participator at best.This trend has fast begun to change as fashion consumers all over the globe have started to look at African fashion differently. It is growing, gaining world recognition, acceptance and usage. African fashion and its related activities has become a highly yet silently exported and vibrant part of the local economy and it is gaining momentum.

Of the over 70 million highly spirited youths in Nigeria for instance, it is safe to say that over 3 million Nigerians are actively involved and gainfully employed

by various fashion endeavors including textiles, designing, sewing, make up, fashion accessories, distribution etc.

The evenTIt is in recognition of this fact that Neo Mantra, an intellectual property development company in partnership with ALLURE Magazine and Bunor Creazioni, a renowned Nigerian based fashion design, consultancy and model management firm headed by Frank Osodi, have teamed up and empowered by the Rivers State Government to produce the Native & Vogue Port Harcourt

International Fashion Week holding, September 20th to 22nd, 2013.

The aim of Native & Vogue is to foster the growth of this seemingly silent but vibrant industry by providing structure and grand economic purpose which would ultimately benefit all stake holders especially the residents in the hosting state, Rivers.

The Native & Vogue project is a 3 day fashion week that primarily brings together already established fashion designers from Nigeria and beyond who will showcase

their wares. This will serve as a base and spring board for the upcoming and aspiring designers to cease the opportunity for a career launch after undergoing a short tutelage under the already established designers. The upcoming designers that perform above a benchmark will have the opportunity to boost their career opportunity by furthering their skills in prestigious fashion schools. The entire three day period will be filled with fan fare and activities that will draw attention to and bring goodwill to Rivers State. Some of expected activities include: Meet

& Greet, Fashion Shows, Exhibitions, Workshops Allure Style Awards and Fashion Competitions.

ObjecTivesThe Port Harcourt International Fashion Week is a platform that is meant to create and develop local fashion and its related crafts in a magnitude that will benefit the community, positively influence education, culture, community services, tourism as well as the economy. The Rivers State Government has since recognized this opportunity and has taken steps to actively engage the youth by launching this unique platform.

This will serve to fulfill millennium development goals by reducing poverty due to jobs and opportunities creation and ultimately place the Treasure Base of The Nation on the International Fashion Map.This will come with an array of opportunities which will prove the government’s efforts in alleviating poverty and ultimately buttress the “Rivers of Opportunities” slogan.

At the end, the event would have successfully gathered participants from the Rivers State Government officials, corporate bodies, diplomatic communities, celebrities from the social circles, local and international fashion industries, glamour industry, local and international fashion and showbiz writers and media.

naTive & vOgue Technical Team:The key resource person of The Native & Vogue project is Mr. Frank Richard Osodi, a man with over 20 years experience in the fashion and modeling industry. Some of his participatory and organizing accolades include: South Africa fashion week, Vukani Fashion Awards, Mozambique Fashion Week, Africa Fashion Week London, PAHBA Awards, Miss Africa U.S.A, Atlanta and Barbados and a host of other fashion fairs all over the world.

Frank is the brain behind the highly successful annual international fashion show BLACK, BOLD AND JAZZY and also dressed the first black African to win the miss world crown, AGBANI DAREGO.

In addition to his efforts, other renowned designers and close associates of the project include: Ituen Bassey, Femi Adebayo Jones, Lanre Da-Silva, Momo Couture, Mai Atafo, Paul Van Zyl – the international guest designer.The event will be done in partnership with Red Dahlia Production, a South Africa-based Company renowned for seasoned fashion and pageant show management and execution.

It must be stated that the key anchor person/headliner will be the very beautiful daughter of Rivers State, first African ever to win the Miss World beauty pageant and has continued to be a source of national pride ever since. This is the very elegant Agbani Darego (OON). She has embraced the project and given her total support to the execution of this project mainly because of the opportunities it provides the youths in Rivers State especially.

DEEP SET EYES You have deep set eyes when the brow bone is more noticeable than the eyelid. To bring visibility of the eyelid forward, avoid dark eye shadows in the crease (between eyelid and brow bone).HOODED EYES This shape is endowed with a well defined lash line and brow bone. Highlighting shades should be applied on brow bone and inner corners of the eyes. Midtone shades on the crease and hooded area to help the lid appear to recede. Blend. Apply darker shades from the centre of the eyelid to the outer corner, be careful not to apply on the entire lid, it will make the eyes appear smaller.CLOSE SET EYES They are less than one eye width apart. To make them appear farther apart, use highlighting shades on brow bone and lid, most especially to the inner corner of eye.

NOTE:• Highlighting refer to the lightest shades, typically very sheer. Midtone is a medium shade, which can be matte or shimmer. The darkest colour is the accent, used to define and contour.

In order to achieve great success when trying to sculpt your shoulders, be sure to perform exercises that are designed to target this muscle group. In addition, eating healthy and drinking plenty of water is very important to your success.

Here are ways to sculpt your shoulders:

One of the most important ways that you can work to sculpt your shoulders is by performing exercises that are designed to increase muscle mass in this area. Like other muscles, sculpting the shoulders will not happen overnight; in fact, it can take months or even a year to get your shoulders to look the way that you want. this was one vanity fest worth seeing. I mean, I’m unrepentant when it comes to supporting people to live well when you work hard for it; style, in particular, to me, is non-negotiable. You’ve just got to look good in my books; but to turn a children’s school to a style, position and wealth war zone is just the height of irresponsibility to me.

Narrow sighted and shallow behaviour that these women are unknowingly inflicting their children’s lives with! With how absorbent of parents’ ways and their environment that these beautiful gifts from God are, these women unknowingly fill them up with this nonsense. It doesn’t exhibit till the kids are well in their teens and early adult years and by then, it’s too late to uproot. Then, the same parents start to complain about the selfishness and vanity of their kids and the lack of interest in serious business or work! What a joke! Anyway, I vent and digress as usual; Lol…

I decided to heed Anita’s advice and donned designer duds head to toe, in order to adequately ‘represent’, lol... Black, knee length Donna Karan dress, black Prada platforms, blue Chanel boy bag, diamond and sapphire jewellery, Cartier pasha watch and Fendi bracelet were all on full duty. My hair was pulled back tight and my big, faux bun attached to it. Overall, I looked sleek, polished, uber successful and aloof.

Ha! Anita laughed with joy when she saw me. “This is your territory”, she said. “You’re familiar with this terrain!”

“Big difference, though,” I quipped. “I can act this but I don’t live like this. I would hate to be this aloof, snobbish and materialistic... Plastic! Just a bit of heat melts it, you know.”

“Yes, well put,” said Anita. “Why live so fake? Annoying thing is that most of them are nouveau riche whose husbands just made some money and they have just started getting exposure to wealth and its trappings. Just moved up and then acting like they don’t even know where Akowonjo is anymore. Lol!!

“Serious matter...,” I said, laughing with her. “Anyway, you look the part too, so let’s go.” Anita had on a cream coloured silk blouse with enhanced shoulders, chocolate brown pencil skirt, chocolate Louis Vuitton platforms in monogram canvas, matching monogram canvas sac plat (handbag) and yellow and white gold jewellery.

We decided we would take her brand new Ford Edge Limited edition and off we went. There we were, dressed to the nines, for a school event, to boot! What a downward, material spiral our society is in, I thought. Sad, sad, sad!

My dear colleague, Anita, had invited me to her daughter’s ‘graduation’ from primary school. Infinitely amused at the whole idea of a grand ‘graduation ceremony’, followed by a ‘prom night’ to boot, I’d agreed to go along with her. Plus, she’d regaled me with tales of the excesses of several of my acquaintances and friends who had children in the school and I’d thought it would be amusing to go take a look. Lol! PLUS, I had a relatively light work schedule that day...

“Cack up big time o.” she’d said. “Don’t think it’s a casual thing. Be in one of those your incredibly superior styles from head to toe and have your ‘board meeting’ expression in place - unreadable.”

“Ah ah! That bad? Isn’t it a children’s school? A primary school?” I’d asked incredulously.

I am 29 years old and, by the grace of God, still a virgin. Something happened to me recently which I will like to share with you. It was my birthday and I went to a known photo studio for a photo shoot. When I got there, the owner of the studio was very nice and after he learnt that it was My Day, he became more caring; which I appreciated.

After I had taken some shots, he requested some minutes from me to attend to some customers which I agreed to, not knowing that it was all a set up. When the customers left, I took more pictures and afterwards, he began to make some illicit moves towards me which I didn’t take

really that of diversity but intolerance for one another’s differences within the office environment, which in turn resulted in lack of peaceful/conducive work climate.

Former president of the Fashion Designers’ Association of Nigeria, Mrs. Patricia Agbakwu-Ajegwu, during the week in Lagos, opened an ultra modern fabric shop located at the popular Surulere shopping plaza. The one stop fabric shop is dedicated to selling Vlisco Hollandais line of Ankara fabrics at wholesale prices to customers.

Wife of the governor of Lagos State, Dame Abimbola Fashola, who formerly declared the shop opened, led a cream of the society to the opening that became a fashion event. Amongst the dignitaries present were, Senator Daisy Danjuma, guest of honour, Mrs Leila Fowler, Mother of the Day and Publisher Vanguard group of Newspapers who was Father of the Day.

The members of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), led by its current president, Mrs Funmi Ajila-Oladipo, also came to support one of their own.

In her welcome speech, Mrs Patricia Agbakwu-Ajegwu enjoined Nigerians to dress Nigerian by embracing the Ankara fabric instead of the laces imported from foreign lands. She also announced a discount on all fabrics bought on that day.
