Safe and consistent with RittalEurope’s largest twin-tube road tunnel with full cross-ventilation, thePlabutsch Tunnel, uses Rittal tunnel technology. This 10 km long struc-ture, which leads through the centre of Graz on the A9 in Austria, linksSouth-East Europe to Central Europe. Safety was the primary concernwhen constructing the tunnel. There are emergency telephone nichesspaced approximately 200 m apart throughout the entire length of thetunnel. This translates into a total of 44 telephones installed over thetunnel’s full length of almost 10 km.

Fire extinguisher nichesTunnel extinguisher systems wereinstalled in a total of nine fire extinguisherniches.

Hose reel niches For the supply of fire extinguisher water, located in the tunnel’s storage niches.

Emergency telephone nichesA total of 44 emergency telephoneniches were installed every 212 metresthroughout the total length of 9,260 m.

The tunnel extinguisher systems for added safety are built into ninestorage niches. The hose reel niches and hydrant niches are requiredfor immediate use in the event of a fire, in conjunction with the smokeextractor systems. The particular advantage of Rittal’s solutions is thewide door opening with snap-fastening function.

Rittal has also installed 330 inspection niches for cleaning the drainagechannels.

Rittal technology – the ideal combination for low-voltagedistribution and switchgear in the heavy current sector. The future-oriented complete power distribution system, Maxi-PLS,was installed in the Plabutsch Tunnel inside TS 8 enclosures from Rittal.Benefits of compact, safe power distribution in the TS 8 include:

Well-established enclosure technology with infinite installation possibilities.Standardised, mass-produced Maxi-PLS components.Type testing of the system technology.Standardised contact hazard protection.Enhanced productivity, thanks to simple project planning.Fast assembly.High safety standards.

Engineer Anton Waltl, Regional Government officer:“With a project the size of the PlabutschTunnel, it is essential to have flexible supplypartners. The quality products and stan-dardised procedures at Rittal haveenabled us to meet the requirements forthe Plabutsch Tunnel quickly, easily, andabove all very efficiently.”

Rittal rail technology – Examples of modern rail transport

Section of ICE track betweenWürzburg and Hanover (Germany) Lötschberg Tunnel (Switzerland)

During the modernisation of theexisting Lötschberg rail tunnel, special E30 enclosures from Rittal were used for installation of the emergency lighting.Increased safety requirements stipulated that the enclosures must withstand fire protection testing in classes E30, E60 and E90 to German standard DIN 4102.

Control of signals andpoints, power supply andactivation of the systemlighting.

Rittal technology packagingfor rail tunnelsIndoor and outdoor solutions for every eventualityWe guarantee the best possible solution for every packaging taskassociated with rail transport. Be it stainless steel enclosures with anextremely high protection category of IP 69, or suction- and pressure-proof enclosures for use inside the tunnel and beside the track, Rittalhas the right solution to suit every application, from the ordinary to theextraordinary.

For special outdoor applications, we supply enclosures with a sandwichconstruction which offers exceptional resistance to vandalism. A specialnano-spray finish offers protection against graffiti and is easy to clean.

“Rittal meets our hightechnical demands.”“We have known Rittal for a longtime. During the course of an SBBtender, we invited bids from fourenclosure suppliers. Rittal met ourhigh technical requirements, and wasalso commercially convincing. Wewere also impressed by the fact thatall impact and environmental testingis conducted in-house at Rittal, andthe communication channels are verydirect and efficient. Their exceptional,customer-oriented technical know-ledge and the consultancy servicesoffered by Rittal in Switzerland andGermany were also beyondreproach.” Markus Hofstettler, CFO at Comlab AG, and Georg Stirnimann, CEO of Comlab AG

Uninterrupted receptionMake calls without interferenceIn today’s mobile world, it is almost taken for granted that we are con-tactable at all times. However, interference-free reception inside tunnelsis not yet possible. The Swiss railway companies are currently makingmajor efforts to enable uninterrupted reception inside tunnels for theirpassengers – and TS 8 Top enclosure systems from Rittal are majorcontributors to this endeavour.

Comlab and Rittal – and the connection is madeIf you have ever tried to make a call inside a railway tunnel and foundthat the connection works, chances are that technology from the Swissfirm Comlab is involved. Comlab project plans, develops, tests, manu-factures and assembles transmitter and amplifier systems to ensurereception for the various telecommunications networks, even insidetunnels. In a project by the national Swiss railway SBB, special TS 8enclosures from Rittal protect the Comlab amplifier systems and trans-mitters against the tough ambient conditions prevailing in railway tun-nels. Each individual device is monitored from the company headquar-ters in Ittigen to ensure proper functioning. In case of malfunctions, there is a direct link to the tunnel.

An excellent niche product wheresafety is paramountOne of the key considerations in tunnel construction is human safety. With this in mind, Rittal has developed an outstanding solution for theemergency telephone and fire extinguisher housing.

Mindful of the high stresses inside the tunnel caused by pressure, corrosion, temperature, exhaust fumes and humidity, we have devisedspecial enclosures whose compact design meets every conceivablerequirement. They are easily installed in the various niches of the tunnelwall, where there may be considerable structural variations. An intelli-gent panelling solution after the enclosure has been installed compen-sates perfectly for any such variations and ensures a uniform appear-ance. Every compact emergency telephone niche is custom-producedexclusively by us, and is tailored precisely to your specific requirements.

Rittal climate control solutionsare designed for reliable operation.

Play it safe with Rittal

Corrosion protection to automotive standardsEnclosure and case systems from Rittal are temperature-resistant from–30 °C to +70 °C. Due to the use of an innovative nanoceramic pre-treatment, electrophoretic dipcoat priming developed for the automo-tive industry and powder coating, even standard versions achieve ahigh corrosion protection. Adapted to the ambient conditions the use of more resistant materials, zinc phosphating and aluminium coatingensures exceptional longevity and resistance; for outdoor use powdercoatings with a significantly higher UV resistance are also available. At our accredited in-house quality laboratory, our products are tested to specific requirements such as suction and pressure resistance or aparticular protection category, using an extensive battery of tests. Thanks to our consistent quality management, our enclosure systemsboast a long service life of up to 20 years.

A superb climate at all timesWhether you opt for active or passive climate control, our climatesolutions are devised and manufactured for reliable operation in enclo-sures. Precise, computer-assisted flow models (CFD – computationalfluid dynamics) provide the basis for fault-free operation, even at theplanning stage. Hot spots are localised using an infrared camera (ther-mography) and can be minimised by means of targeted climate controlmeasures.

Computer-assisted climate models are used at the planning phase toprovide the basis for subsequentfault-free operation in Rittal enclo-sures.

On the test benchPressureIn a railway tunnel, absolute pressure differences of up to 20 kPamay occur. This places a demanding challenge on planning andcomputer simulation to ensure that everything runs smoothly oncethe tunnel is operational.Vibration, corrosionOur accredited test laboratory not only conducts vibration andpressure measurements, but also ensures that stone chips, dust, salt, abrasion and exhaust gas fumes do not cause damage as aresult of corrosion. Our entire tunnel technology expertise comesinto play here.EMCElectromagnetic compatibility (EMC) plays a crucial role in today’shighly complex applications. Whether for power supply, communica-tion or safety equipment, all protection is adequately dimensionedand tested at our EMC laboratory.
