Sports @ STORM RHSS Newsletter Info 2016

An amazing season for the varsity girls basketball team. Outstanding improvement through the season lead to a silver finish overall in the league.

The start of the Archery Club in September saw the return of many experienced archers from last year. They were joined by a new crop of beginner archers eager

to learn a skill that has existed since prehistoric times. They'll continue to hone their shooting skills until Archery Team tryouts in February.

We have wrapped up another great cross country season. It was great to see some returning runners as well as a lot of new faces. Our top finisher came 16th at ROPSSAA. All of the athletes worked hard and showed dedication and commitment to the team with after school practices and early morning workouts. We hope to see many of them back next year! The Girls Flag Football Team went undefeated in the regular season, and were led by many veteran players. With the addition of some new girls, this year’s team was one of Coach Jack’s best. Good luck to the girls as they head into the playoffs.

The Junior Boys Volleyball Team has had a successful year so far. Coach Barrett has been pleased with the effort, attitude, and improvement of the team throughout the year. Good luck to the Juniors as they head into playoffs next week. The Senior Boys Volleyball finished league play with a 4-4 record, and have qualified for playoffs beginning this Thursday. Good luck to the Seniors as they begin their annual playoff run! Our Physical Education classes are off and running, figuratively, and literally! Class champions have been recognized in many various sports, and activity units completed so far, and Grade 9 phys ed classes are about to climb high and test their strength in the high ropes, and self defense units.

@ Your Library Follow us on Twitter @RHSSlibrary.

This year has been very busy so far in the library. Our new Chrome book sign-out program is a hit! Students have been regularly signing out all of our 16 Chrome books for use in their classes and returning them to the library at the end of the school day. Our new laptop bars are also being well used by students who want to plug in their

personal devices while completing their assignments. Our Library-Counselling Orientation sessions ran from September 21st to 29th this year and gave all Grade 9 students the chance to become familiar with using the library, and all the services available from our school guidance counsellors.

A highlight in October was a poetry writing workshop on the 25th, run by spoken-word performer Dwayne Morgan. Several classes attended throughout the day. Dwayne shared some of his poetry and then guided students through the process of creating their own word art. A few brave souls even presented their original poems to the whole group!

Last, but not least, White Pine book club books have arrived. This year we will be running this reading club featuring Canadian Young Adult fiction, in Semester 2 only. We are looking forward to the enthusiastic participation of many book-loving students.

English Department @ STORM

For Curriculum Night, the English Department showcased pieces of students’ work, two scenes from Romeo and Juliet, a poetry recital and a modern skit. We took 80 students on a field trip to Stratford, to better appreciate the Bard! Many of our students also enjoyed being enriched by Spoken Word artist, Dwayne Morgan, who ran a Writing Workshop in the library. Our hardworking staff did an impressive job preparing our students for the pilot online OSSLT, which means that they are now much more ready to write it in March 2017.

Hansen for Humanity @ STORM Congratulations to Mr. Birrell, Ms. Frankland and Hansen’s H4H student club on being the winner of the Daryl L. Cook Secondary School Peer Helping Award – 2016. At the end of June, 2016, Mr. Birrell was made aware of this honour awarded to a group of students in recognition of their working together for local and global causes. You make us proud!

Five (5) Messages from the Peel District School Board

(1)Peel schools, students and staff recognize and honour First Nation Land daily

At the Peel District School Board, everything we do is designed to help each child achieve to the best of his or her ability. The board recognizes that encouraging, inclusive and respectful environments help students achieve to the best of their ability. As part of this important work, at the Regular Meeting of the board on Sept. 30, trustees approved that the following statement will be played/read each school day at all Peel schools and all board-hosted events prior to the Canadian national anthem: We would like to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation.

The acknowledgement recognizes Indigenous heritage and the importance of the land that we are located on. In addition to helping build awareness about one of our local First Nation communities, the acknowledgement also honours the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action about honouring Indigenous people’s historical and contemporary contributions to Canada. Students in all Peel schools will learn about the importance of the acknowledgement through lesson plans produced in collaboration and partnership with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation through the use of the Sacred Trust resource.

(5)Traffic safety in our community

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and

parents safe while commuting to and from school.

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on

any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross

before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into

traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car. Say goodbye to your child before you park to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.

Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.

Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street.

Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.
