Dear Parents, As you will be aware, this is a time of deep sadness for the whole school community. The bereavement of one of our Year 11 students has left us feeling a sense of loss which is difficult to comprehend. I have written separately to parents and have also detailed the support which is on offer to students. During this very difficult time, many of our students and staff represented the school at the Year 6 Open Evening this Thursday. Many I thank them for their strength and fortitude during this time. Yours sincerely, Steve Mulcahy Headteacher

Students used the theme 'Fire-works' and took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh 'Starry Night'. RICHARD LANDER SCHOOL WEEKLY BULLETIN : 20th September 2013

Mr Beech, Mr Pascoe (Governor), and Mandy Kimmins nominated in the West Briton Community Awards Shortlist! Friends of Richard Lander have

featured prominently in this years West Briton Community Awards shortlist. Mr Beech, who teaches DT and also coordinates Student Leadership and Greenpower, has been nominated for Teacher of the Year for his fundraising events which inspire students. Mr Beech, pictured above, had his head shaved into a Chameleon Mohawk last term to raise money for our partner schools in Uganda, in one of many crazy fundraising events. Parent Governor, Mr Shaun Pascoe, has been nominated for the category of Charity Hero. He is a former RAF member and the visionary behind the Turn to Starboard charity, which helps servicemen or women by taking them sailing. Mandy Kimmins has been nominated for Sport Person of the Year. She is

instrumental in the organisation of our annual Year 9 & 10 Summer Ball, which she hosts at St Agnes Football Club. Many of the students will also know her from her management of the U16 St Agnes Boys Teams. She also runs and promotes women's and disabled peoples’ teams. We are sure you would love to vote for these fantastic folk! To vote please visit thisiscornwall.co.uk and search for Community Awards. There is an online form at the bottom of the article which you can use to vote. Unfortunately you will not be able to vote from school, as their system sees all applications from here as the same person trying to vote multiple times, but please vote from home instead!

New Books in the Library The School Library has lots of new books including :

Nine-year-old Mattie worries so much that her brain turns into spaghetti and gets all tangled up! Which isn’t surprising. In a family as big and crazy as hers, there’s always something to worry about! Will the seeds she planted in the gar-

den grow into fruit and veg like everyone promised? Why does it seem as if Grand-ma doesn’t like them sometimes? And what on earth is wrong with Mum? Fortu-nately, reassurance is always close at hand… The dynamics of family life are perfectly captured for younger audiences in this fantastic new series. No one asked Tom how he would feel about spending two months on his Aunt Millie's farm. Maybe that's because he would have said he didn't feel good about it at all. Tom doesn't like animals and they

don't like him — and now the city boy has to put up with stampeding baby lambs, boy-chasing chickens, and more. Worst of all, he's lonely. With no friends around, there isn't much for him to do besides explore the fields and nearby forest on his own. Then Tom sees a graceful black fox in the woods. Suddenly he finds he can spend hours watching her. Without even realizing it, he starts to become more comfortable with the power, beauty, and mysterious magic of the natural world, and to feel that he is a part of nature himself. When the lives of his fox and her cub are in danger, Tom knows that he has to do something.

Because a Fire Was in My Head is a collection of poems for children from authors as diverse as Spike Milligan, Stevie Smith, Lewis Carroll and John Lennon. Selected by Michael Morpurgo and

illustrated by Quentin Blake, this lovely book encourages young readers to give free rein to their thoughts and feelings.

Marianne is a young girl who is bedridden with a long-term illness. She draws a picture to fill her time, and finds that she spends her dreams within the picture she has drawn. As time goes by

she becomes sicker and starts to spend more and more time trapped within her fantasy world, and her attempts to make things better by adding to and crossing out things in the drawing make things progressively worse. Her only companion in her dream world is a boy called Mark who is also a long-term invalid in the real world. KYBA Kernow Youth Book Awards 2014 The Bunker Diary - Kevin Brooks The Day I met Suzie – Chris Higgins North of Nowhere – Liz Kessler A Street Cat Names Bob – James Bowen Hero on a Bicycle – Shirley Hughes The Battles of Ben Kingdom – Andrew Beasley

RICHARD LANDER SCHOOL WEEKLY BULLETIN : 17th May 2013 5

RICHARD LANDER SCHOOL WEEKLY BULLETIN : 20th September 2013

Are you plagued by Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) Gremlins?

Worry no more! We are delighted to announce the launch of the RLS Guide to Literacy, a tool that

will help to conquer those gremlins and put them firmly back in their place. Every week there will

be a different tip in the bulletin to help support students who aren’t sure about their spelling

punctuation and grammar. The first one is all about that tricky little punctuation mark – the

apostrophe.

The apostrophe

The poor apostrophe suffers from a lot of abuse! Also known as the ‘greengrocer’s apostrophe’, it can often be seen

being used incorrectly for plurals such as:

Apple’s 65p per kilo

Lemon’s 60p each

That doesn’t mean that some greengrocers are the only ones who do this! If you look around, apostrophe abuse is very

common so it’s time to get it straightened out.

Apostrophes are used for two reasons: to show possession and omission.

The apostrophe of possession

This is to show belonging:

With a single owner, apostrophe ‘s’ is added to the owner

The cat’s tail (the tail belonging to the cat)

The class’s teacher (the teacher of the class)

James’s book (the book belonging to James. This can also be shown as James’ book.)

If the word for more than one owner doesn’t end in ‘s’, you still add apostrophe ‘s’ to the owner

The children’s toys

The men’s championship

When there is more than one owner and the word ends in ‘s’, add the apostrophe after the ‘s’

The cats’ tails (the tails of more than one cat)

The boys’ book (more than one boy but only one book)

What about ‘The boys rugby boots’? Without the apostrophe, it’s impossible to tell how many boys we are talking about.

The boy’s rugby boots (one boy)

The boys’ rugby boots (more than one boy)

The apostrophe of omission

This shows when letters are missing because words have been joined together (these are also known as contractions).

I can’t go (cannot go)

She’s very tired (She is)

I’ve got lots of homework (I have)

Do you have any requests for spelling, punctuation and grammar gremlins that you would like to see banished? If so,

please email your requests to

[email protected] with RLS Literacy in the subject header.

I need to try and negotiate more and shout less!

It was great getting through the day without an argument!

I liked spending time with my Mum and doing things together

The day couldn’t have been better

I want to listen more in future (parent!)
