Common Notation
• The way in which music is transcribed is known as common notation.– Common notation divides music into
segments known as measures or bars.– These segments are divided with vertical lines
known as bar lines
Example of common notation

• These beats are organized in a pattern of beats know as a Time Signature.
Time Signature
• The top number indicates how many beats are in a measure.
• The bottom number indicates the type of number that will receive one beat.
Time Signature
• Understanding the bottom number.– 4 = A Quarter note (a fourth)– The quarter note will receive one beat
Common Time
