BBurrillville was once part of the town of Glocester, RI. Glocester thought they were too big and decided in 1806 to divide into two different towns. They named Burrillville after James Burrill, a member of the Senate in Rhode Island. Burrillville has eight villages named after Indian tribes. The villages are: Nasonville, Oakland, Harrisville, Pascoag, Wallum Lake, Mapleville, Glendale, and Bridgeton, The town is made up of 57.3 square miles. Burrillville was a big mill town. Every village had their own mill.

CCarousels

Have you ever ridden a carousel (another word for a special merry-go-round)? Rhode Island has three of the nicest 150 original hand-made wooden carousels in the United States. The flying horse carousel, is located in Westerly, is the oldest operating carousel in America, built in the 1850s. The other two carousels in RI are The Crescent Park Carousel in East Providence and The Slater memorial Park Carousel in Pawtucket.

DDinersDiner’s started in 1858 when a 17 year old Walter Scott decided to make more money by selling coffee and sandwiches to using a basket. He sold it to Newspaper Night workers in Providence. In 1872 Scott was making a lot of money. Scott started to park a Horse Drawn Wagon in front of a Newspaper Office. When word spread of his great idea people started making bigger and more advanced wagons to sell their own foods. Which they started to look like Dining carts on trains. Diner might be short for “Railroad Dining Car”. Some people even made there diner out of old train cars! A diner in Pawtucket was the first diner to be listed in the national register of historic places, A famous diner called the Haven brothers Haven brothers parks in front of city hall in summer and fall to this day.

EExciting toy company. Hasbro became a toy company in 1923. It was started by three brothers from Poland named Henry, Hilal, and Herman Hassenfeld in Providence, Rhode Island. They started their company as a textile mill. The brothers started making toys in 1930. Some of the most popular toys are: Mr. Potato Head, G.I.Joe, My Little Pony, and Monopoly. It is the second largest toy company after Mattel.

FFamous Native American Tribes of Rhode IslandIn Rhode Island there were five major tribes: Wampanoag, Narragansett, Niantic, Nipmuc and Pequot. There were around 10,000 Native Americans in Rhode Island when the first Europeans came, the Narragansett's made up about half of that. The Wampanoag were one of the oldest tribes. Village tribe leaders were called Sachems. The leader of a tribe is called the Grand Sachem. Wampanoags believed that spirits live in the forests and water around them. The chief of the Nipmucs, during King Philip’s War, was Muttawamp, The chief of Narragansett during King Philip’s War was Canochet. As a sign of peace Wampanoag and English Governors would smoke a ceremonial pipe. One of the most popular ingredients for Native Americans was corn. The Narragansett were the strongest and they were the largest tribe. Wampanoag women found comfort making pots out of colorful clay found on the river side.

Native Americans are NOBLE!

GGaspee

King George III made the colonists of America pay very high taxes on the goods they bought. Many colonists turned to smuggling so they didn’t have to pay the taxes. In 1772, the British Schooner, Gaspee, got stuck while giving chase to a smuggling vessel. 64 Rhode Islanders took the Gaspee crew prisoner and then set the ship on fire! Every June, Pawtucket has a gaspee Day parade. It includes a Johnnycake Breakfast, races, a huge parade, music and a ritual burning of the Gaspee.

HHistory In 1636, Roger Williams left Massachusetts Bay to look for land where he could practice his religious beliefs. In 1644, Roger Williams received a charter for Rhode Island. Around 1675, Native Americans attacked Providence settlers and burnt down more than two dozen homes. Portsmouth built a schoolhouse that is now the oldest in America. Then in 1772, Rhode Islanders burned the British ship, H.M.S. Gaspee in Narragansett Bay to revolt against the English ruling them. Then in 1776 Rhode Island was the first to deny allegiance to England. So this is one of the reasons why the American Revolution erupted. In 1790, Rhode Island became the 13th state on May 29th and Samuel Slater began the American Industrial Revolution in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Finally, in 1900, Providence is named the official state capital. Rhode Island today has many great places to visit, many people enjoy all the histroy that is here along with the wonderful beaches.

Unfortunately, most jewelry is now made overseas so many people who made jewelry in Rhode Island lost their jobs and had to find work doing other things. The older the jewelry the more it costs. There is medical jewelry. Jewelry is made of rocks and minerals. Some of these are silver, diamonds, pearls, and many others. Some jewelry is made of gold since gold is bendable. Jewelry helps you be fancy. A lot of famous people wear jewelry. Certain kinds of jewelry is very expansive while other types can be cheaper and affordable.

KKing Philip's War It was named after a Wampanoag chief. He was called King Philip. The Great Swamp Fight battle was fought during King Philip's War. It was a war fought between the New England settlers and the Narragansett tribe in December of 1675. The Narragansett people, the Native Americans, were living around the Narragansett Bay when some New England settlers tried to live with them and share the land. The reason for their fighting seemed to be that the English wanted land from King Philip. Also, King Philip thought that the English killed his brother Alexander. King Philip’s War was one of the bloodiest wars in American history. The swamp fight took place in December 1675. The Indians did not win King Philips war in1676.

LLighthousesThere are 21 different kinds of lighthouses in Rhode Island. In 1718 the first lighthouse was standing for two years in Rhode Island. On Fisher Island there is a lighthouse history museum.

RRoger WilliamsRoger was born December 21, 1603 in Cowley, Middlesex, England. His father was James and his mother, Alice Pemporten. His father was a merchant tailor in Smithfield, England. Roger Williams married Mary Barnard on December 15, 1629 at a church in England. They had six children born in America: Mary, Freeborn, Providence, Mercy, Daniel and Joseph. Roger wanted to go to Boston because the King of England was making England pray his religion so he left and went to Boston with his wife. When he and his wife arrived in Boston on February 5, 1631, he was welcomed almost as soon as he got there. He was invited to be an Assistant Minister in the Boston Church while John Wilson went back to England to get his wife. But he declined saying it was “An unseparated church”. The Church leader was angry because he was preaching so Roger had to go to court. Sadly he was found guilty and was suppose to be sent back to England. Instead, he traveled into the woods looking for the Narragansett tribe. He was found and stayed with the tribe for 4 weeks. They gave him land near Boston and he called the land Providence.
