Test A1 saw Chris Chap-man’s Raw Striker break down with its gear box sounding like a bucket of bolts. Times for the tests were in the 40 to 60 second bracket. Com-ments from competi-tors, especially those who had not been to the Crimson Dynamo before were great. They liked

the venue and the tests. Now, Birmingham Wheels Park isn’t the prettiest of locations but it is amazing how the sunshine can improve the looks of a place.

At the end of the second round of tests Richard Pinkney, current MSA Autotest Champion, came in with broken rear suspension. It turned out that a mounting bracket for the rear suspension had broken away. He was

office quickly set up. Shelter, table, gen-erator etc. We then started to set out the cones for the tests and with help from Melvyn, Will and Tom. Three tests were roughly set out then fine tuned. When you plan the tests on paper you never know how they well they will fit in the space available. Un-fortunately you can’t change the layout because the test dia-grams have already been printed out. Not being an autotester I waited for comments from some of the com-petitors and made fur-ther changes to distanc-es and the spacings of the cones before mark-ing out.

The cars started the tests at 10.30. Some of the saloon cars found the far end of test A1 tight so I opened it up a bit for test A2. Note for next year, the back straight is narrow so keep the manoeuvres there open.

The lead up to an event, especially the week be-fore, can be a bit fran-tic. You wonder if you’re going to get enough entries. You always want those last two or three so that you know the event won’t make a financial loss. You hope you’re going to get enough marshals and help-ers. It’s only on the day when everything comes together that you feel more relaxed about the event. That’s just what happened with this year’s Crimson Dynamo Autotest held on the oval track at Birming-ham Wheels Park. After attempts at welding Richard made it out to complete his third attempts but then the repair broke again. Also during the lunch break Ian Chapman announced his retirement as his engine was on the way out and he didn’t want to risk run-ning the afternoons long tests.
