Item 1 – Q1b: What do we learn about the link between mobile phones and smoking? (4)

In the article we learn that there is a link between mobile phones and smoking and that “among 15 year olds smoking fell from 30% to 23% between 1996 to 1999.” This might suggest that smoking has gone down due to mobile phones becoming more popular. This could be because teens cannot afford both products and they feel that “smoking may become seen as old technology with the bright new world of text messaging, email, wap and 3G phhones becoming the aspirational gateway.” The phrase “aspirational” implies that teens desire phones and it has now beome more fashionale to have a phone than to smoke.

Item 1

Q2.What can you find in the article that suggests smoking is:

• Dangerous

• Is being replaced by mobile phones (8)

Page 8: Revision Unit 1

Dangerous

• The article suggests that smoking can be dangerous when it says “if smoking continues into adult life, the eventual result is a much greater risk of respiratory problems, heart disease or lung cancer.” This might imply that the dangers of smoking increase as you get older. The use of the word “risk” perhaps conveys that if you smoke you are playing a game with your life which you might lose. Ultimately, smoking is incredibly dangerous at any age, but the article reminds us that if you smoke for a long period you are most likely to fall ill.

Item 2

Q3 How is language used in the item to

• Persuade

• Inform (12)

Inform or Persuade?

• “…for a better mobile life”

• “no-nonsense guide to 3G”

• “save up to £1200 by moving to pay monthly”

• “video call your loved ones on 3G”

Page 10: Revision Unit 1

Inform

• The writer uses language to inform young people to change to a carphone warehouse contract in the fact “save up to £1200 by moving to pay monthly.” This reveals that if you change your mobile phone payments you could save yourself a large amount of money. The figure “£1200” is an incredibly impressive figure as it is perhaps more than a young person could earn in a month. In addition, the word “save” would inform young people that this is going to benefit them financially without really doing anything themselves.
