Winter Break Assignment Review

Habitat vs. Community vs. Ecosystem

• Habitat– Particular environment in which an organism normally

lives• Ex. Desert, salt marsh, lake, coral reef, stream, prairie, rain

forest, tundra, etc.

• Community– All the different species within a habitat

• Ex. Trees, mice, rabbits, wolves, fungi of a forest

• Ecosystem– All of the living (biotic) AND nonliving (abiotic) factors of

an area along with the members of the community

First Let’s Review

• Different ecosystems have different organisms living there

• All ecosystems have abiotic and biotic factors– Abiotic= nonliving• Ex. Temperature, rainfall

– Biotic = living• Ex. Plants, animals, bacteria

Today’s Activity

• Create a powerpoint or prezi presentation to teach the rest of the class about a specific ecosystem and a possible food web that can be found there

• Step 1– Roll the dice to determine what type of ecosystem you will be

researching– 1- Tropical rainforest– 2- Desert– 3- Deciduous Forest– 4- Coniferous Forest– 5- Artic– 6- Ocean

Today’s Activity (cont)

• Step 2– Research plants and animals from this ecosystem and

identify/describe (pictures and text) at least:– Two Producers– Three Primary consumers– Two Secondary consumers– One Tertiary (third) consumer– One Decomposer

• Step 3– Research at least two abiotic factors that make your

ecosystem unique (ex. Extremely low rainfall in desert)

Requirements

• One ecosystem (from dice roll) presented• Slides (pictures + text descriptions) for at least

– Two Producers– Three Primary consumers– Two Secondary consumers– One Tertiary (third) consumer– One Decomposer

• At least two slides (pictures + text descriptions) for TWO abiotic factors (ex. Temperature and rainfall) that make your ecosystem unique

• This powerpoint will be worth 20 classwork/participation points (same as our giant paper food web group project previously)
