Reverse Engineering
Why Reverse Engineering?
Convert an existing physical part to a virtual 3D model
and then alter it to improve the design
• Faster new product development
• Continuous quality improvement
• Customization
• Cut down production cost
Why now?
• Affordable Hardware
• Smaller and Portable
• Easy to use

Reverse Engineering
Our Solution
Solid Edge will focus on extracting surfaces from an
STL mesh and convert them to a solid model.
• Import and repair mesh
• Analyze input mesh geometry
• Convert into surfaces
• Trim, extend and stitch to create a solid body
• Modifying geometry
• Adding details

Tools
Separate install creates a new Reverse Engineering
tab in Solid Edge Part document
• Import – STL mesh data
• Clean-up Mesh by deleting unwanted or intricate
mesh and filling gaps to create a water-tight mesh
• Identify Regions as planes, cylinders, spheres, B-
spline surfaces
• Extract Surfaces from regions
• Modify – surfaces using trim/extend operations
• Stitch – to create a design body

Import
Import STL mesh data
Import command opens STL file in a Part or
Sheetmetal document
• Import STL file in active document
• Choose file units –
• inches
• mm
• meters
• Oriented to Base coordinate system
• Supports Multiple STL files
• Import scanned data from different files

Cleanup Mesh
Delete Mesh
Unwanted mesh with defects or intricate mesh
to make extraction of surfaces easier
• Noise during scanning
• Intricate details
• Symmetric component – delete half mesh
• Delete Mesh Facets
• 2D Box
• 3D Box
• Brush

Working with Mesh
Clean-up Mesh
Repair defects such as gaps and holes in the imported
mesh using the Fill Holes command
• Identifies holes and gaps automatically
• Fill Holes list
• Indicates boundaries
• Zoom to
• Remove
• Manual Selection
• Select / Fence Select / Select All / Deselect All
• Fill Types –
• Smooth – Tangent continuous
• Flat – Edge continuity

Working with Mesh
Automatic Region Identification
Analyzes geometry and automatically detects Planes,
Cylinders, Spheres and B-spline Surface geometry
• Creates Regions – planes, cylinders, spheres and b-
spline surfaces
• Each type is applied a unique color
• Yellow planes
• Cyan cylinders
• Red spheres
• Magenta b-splines

Manual Region Creation
Geometry like Chamfer, Round may be avoided and
created on a model at a later stage. These can be
painted manually
• Paint tools
• Brush
• Fill
• Color Selection
• Eyedropper
• Color Palette
• Paint as Non-extractable
• Regions are created for each color
• Adjacent regions with same color merge

Working with Surfaces
Extract Surfaces
Reads the color applied to a region and extracts a
surfaces
• Creates surfaces
• Planes for Yellow faces
• Cylinders for Cyan faces
• Spheres for Red faces
• B-Surfaces for Magenta face
• Extract
• All
• Selected
• Delete surfaces

Working with Surfaces
Fit Surfaces
Fit a Plane, Cylinder, Sphere or B-Spline surface in
the selected region
• Regions not extracted
• Regions painted other than Yellow, Cyan, Red or
Magenta can be used to fit surfaces
• Delete an extracted surface
• Fit surface

Modify Surface Tools
After faces are extracted use modify surfaces
commands to extend, trim and stitch surfaces
• Intersect
• Trim
• Extend
• Stitch
• Convert to Design Body
