In the words of this hymn then, we carry with us the Word from God, and the call to trust in that Word. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #425 How Firm a Foundation FOUNDATION

“How Firm a Foundation” is a hymn that for over two centuries has assured

believers of the faithfulness of Christ and the certainty of hope. The first verse

acts almost as an introduction to the rest of the text, giving us cause to stop

and ponder the Word of assurance that God has given us, described in greater

detail in the next four verses. Those four verses are in fact paraphrases of

Scripture passages: Isaiah 41:10, 43:2, Romans 8:3-39, Hebrews 13:5, and

Deuteronomy 31:6. In the words of this hymn then, we carry with us the Word

from God, and the call to trust in that Word. But God’s Word is expansive and

not limited to letters on a page - the fifth verse moves us to a trust in the Word

made flesh in Jesus Christ. Thus we are assured by the words we sing, the

Word we are given, and the Word made flesh, of the steadfastness of God and

His unfailing love.

1 Corinthians 1:10-18: Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by

the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and

*THE FELLOWSHIP HYMN #576 I Stand Amazed in the Presence MY SAVIOR’S LOVE

This song reflects the narrative of the suffering and death of Christ on

Calvary, events whose significance and purpose is deepened by the

confessions of the church. Charles Gabriel, the composer of this powerful

hymn, grew up on an Iowa farm. He learned music by playing the reed

organ in his home. He became one of the most prolific composers of

gospel songs of his day. Gabriel's musical activities ranged from teaching

in the singing schools that were so popular in the nineteenth and early

CALL TO PRAYER #399 (v.1) O Lord, Hear My Prayer Taizé Community

distress he kindly will help me: He ever loves and cares for His own. I

must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus! I cannot bear my burdens alone. I must

tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! Jesus can help me, Jesus alone. Tempted and

tried I need a great Savior, one who can help my burdens to bear. I must

INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP Rev. Dr. Berghuis

(Persons wishing to make known a decision to follow Christ as Lord or

to join First Baptist Church are invited to come forward while the

organist plays the first verse of the recessional hymn. You may join First

Baptist Church by transfer of letter, statement of faith, or baptism. The

pastor will greet you as you come forward this morning.)

ACOLYTES ENTER ON LAST VERSE OF HYMN

*HYMN OF RESPONSE (SEE INSERT) Jesus Calls Us GALILEE

Like many hymns that adults have come to cherish, this text based on Jesus’

call of the disciple Andrew was written for the 19th

-century collection of

hymns for children. The popular tune used here was composed for these

words more than quarter of a century later. As we sing this hymn, “let’s be

sure to always lift our eyes above our earthly leaders for the One leader who

ultimately calls us.”

ACOLYTES EXTINGUISH THE LIGHT AND LEAD THE PASTORS OUT,

SYMBOLICALLY CARRYING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST INTO THE WORLD
