The grace of a vocation is indeed one of those very precious gifts of God, and that gift calls for a response of generosity and perseverance to accomplish the enormity of God’s will for us…” We congratulate Fr. Dave and thank him for the many gifts that he has shared with the Congregation of the Resurrection over the past fifty years.

Fr. Lech Wycichowski, CROn June 9, 2013, Fr. Lech Wycichowski, CR celebrated the fortieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He was born and educated in Poland. In 1960, he began studying at the Minor Diocesan Seminary in Pelplin but had to return home

because the Polish communist government closed the school. Fr. Lech was persistent in his determination to be a priest and in 1962 entered the Minor Seminary of the Resurrectionists in Poznan. In 1963 he entered the novitiate and professed first vows in 1964. On June 9, 1973, Fr. Lech was ordained to the priesthood.

After ordination, Fr. Lech’s first assignment was to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Sulislawice, Poland. He served in several parishes as Associate Pastor and taught religion thirty hours per week as well. He ministered as a catechist with children and youth. In 1986, Fr. Lech left Poland and began pastoral ministry at St. Joseph’s Parish, Brantford. In 1991, he was appointed Associate Pastor at St. Stanislaus Parish, Hamilton. Fr. Lech formally transferred to the Ontario-Kentucky Province of the Congregation of the Resurrection in 1994. He is currently serving as Associate Pastor of St. Stanislaus Parish. On July 1st, Fr. Lech will move to Sacred Heart Parish in Kitchener as Associate Pastor.

Fr. Lech is very appreciative of the support and love that he has received throughout his life and ministry. He gives thanks “to God for the graces given to me. To my family…who have given me love and support. To the Polish Province for my religious formation and education. To the O-K Province for inviting me to work in Canada and accepting me as a member of the Province.”

The Congregation thanks Fr. Lech for his forty years of dedicated service and wishes him many more years of fulfilling ministry.

Brother David Ernst, CROn September 8, 2013, Brother David Ernst, CR will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his profession of perpetual vows in the Congregation of the Resurrection. A native of Walkerton, Ontario, Brother Dave professed his first vows in 1958 in Hamilton. On September 8, 1963 he professed perpetual vows. The following year he volunteered to go

to the Resurrectionist Mission in Bolivia. He spent the next thirty years working in the Mission, in the parish of San Miguel, La Paz and as a catechist with the Aymara campesinos.

Brother Dave was asked to describe a highlight of his life and ministry. He said that the one event that touched him most of all was the death in a plane crash of two of the priests from his Bolivian house. Fr. Walter Strub, CR and Fr. James O’Connor, CR had a great influence on Brother Dave. He said: “these two priests with whom we laughed, argued, prayed and broke bread together, always inspired me then and thereafter by their total dedication to God and everyone they served.”

Brother Dave left Bolivia in 1998 and was appointed a member of the pastoral team of St. Anne’s Parish and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ruskin, Florida. There, his ministry was primarily with the Mexican migrant farmers.

In 1999, Brother Dave moved to Resurrection Manor, Waterloo, and has served the Congregation through his assistance to the retired religious of the manor. Brother Dave is generous with his time and tireless in his dedication to serving these men. The Congregation congratulates Brother Dave and thanks him for his dedicated and selfless service.

Getting back to Hayden’s insight about consecrated life freeing him to serve, I would like to conclude by suggesting that we take his words seriously and see his presence as a special gift to the Church.  He is a leader among his friends and has already helped others to realize that there is always something more to discover as we all attempt to live out our baptisms.  Let us join him in helping young people to make this critical connection between the hunger they have to help others and the opportunity that consecrated life offers to free them to love and serve more deeply.

For more information about the Resurrectionists, please email Fr. Toby Collins, CR at: [email protected] or visit the vocation website at www.vocationculture.ca.

BISHOPS: Did you know that four Bishops began their training and received their early formation at Resurrection College (formerly St. Eugene’s College) in Waterloo – Bishops Gerard Bergie, Gary Gordon, Peter Hundt, Daniel Miehm & Archbishop Anthony Mancini? Cardinal Thomas Collins received his BA at St. Jerome’s College, Waterloo when it was operated by the Congregation of the Resurrection. Wonderful Blessings!

RETREAT AND CHAPTER: All the Priests and Brothers of the Ontario-Kentucky Province will be sharing a spiritual retreat at Resurrection College from June 24-28. This will be followed by our Provincial Chapter meetings from July 1-5. The agenda for these days emphasizes our Community life and living and our ministry to and with you. It is a time of planning for the future by discerning how we can best use our gifts and charism to cooperate with God’s saving actions in our world today. As our membership decreases because of age and illness we need to hear the challenge of God to find new ways of using the gifts God has given us.

A JUBILEE CELEBRATION will be held on June 28th to honour Fathers Clair Girodat, David Mowat, Lech Wycichowski and Brother David Ernst. May God’s blessings continue to enrich those they serve.

Secondary Schools. That is a big joy for us. We feel God’s blessing.

In places where we are working most of the population consists of poor, but very welcoming, people. Because of this situation, together with our pastoral – sacramental work, we are trying to help the most needy. In both of our parishes we have kindergarten. Children who are 4-5 years old start their education. Many people cannot afford to pay for their own or their children’s education. We help them by paying for their school fees or buying them items needed for school. Every day the children receive one meal in our kindergartens. We have a special program to help young people who are studying in the Secondary Schools. We are paying school fees for young and intelligent students who, because of various difficulties in their families, cannot pay for their schooling.

Another project is in Kahangala, where we have a special library for secondary school students. There they can come and study, do homework, etc. The library is equipped with a solar-generated electricity system, books, handbooks, tables, chairs, etc. The library is very important for students who don’t have good conditions for studying in their houses. We are still upgrading this library. Three months ago, in Butiama, we started a computer course in our Rita’s Hall, the parish hall (Rita’s Hall is named for Rita Greyerbiehl, a generous benefactor from Waterloo, Ontario). There are about 60 students. We are also helping by buying medicines prescribed for the sick and we sometimes also transport them to the hospital. All of this can be achieved only because many people pray for our mission and many are helping us. Thank you very much for everything you are doing for us, for our people. Asanteni sana (in Swahili this means thank you!)

Vocation Update: Consecrated Life Frees Youth to Love More Deeply Fr. Toby Collins, CR

In a recent conversation with a new candidate for our community, Hayden Starczala, I asked why he was drawn to discerning a call to the priesthood and consecrated life with the Resurrectionists.  He began to respond by saying that he admired the lives of the CR’s he knows and that he likes the charism of the community.  But what caught me off guard was the next part of his response.  He said that consecrated life “frees me to serve.”

How true that is.  The years of formation we complete, the vows we profess, the care offered for the well-being of our members and associates are all directed towards freeing us to love and serve in new and deeper ways.

When I visit high schools throughout the Hamilton Diocese I encounter youth who are very much on fire with a desire to help others. Year after year, students are reaching out to people from third world countries such as the Dominican Republic by helping to build houses and schools.  A little closer to home, food drives for the hungry and fund-raisers for cancer patients are also quite common initiatives that are led by students.  If there is one common phrase that the students echo during these transformative experiences it is the phrase “I got way more out of this than I gave!”  This discovery then gives way to a hunger and search for a more deeply felt experience of helping those in need.

What I believe Hayden and these students are ultimately asking is the question “How can I be more free to love and serve?”  And they often openly ponder what they need to let go of and/or embrace to enjoy this kind of freedom.  In John 10:10 Jesus tells us that he “came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”   As Resurrectionists we see it as our responsibility to work with the laity in providing this abundance of life.  One of the ways that we do this is to help them to be truly free to love more deeply and more radically.  We realize that this is a process of transformation that takes on many different forms depending on one’s vocation.  But when young people are able to make the connection between their desire to love others more deeply and the ability of consecrated life to free them to do so, their interest in joining a religious community of men or women increases.

One of the greatest challenges for the Church today when it comes to promoting consecrated life is helping youth to make this connection.  All too often the formation processes are seen as restrictive when in fact they have become the “birth canal” for lives that are now brilliant examples of what it means to be truly free to love.  When the intentions behind the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience are understood for today, and lived out with fidelity, consecrated life becomes a beautiful and joy-filled life for those who discover this to be their vocation.  And just like any other vocation, one must remain prayerful, informed, and proactive in finding the life and joy that God is leading them towards.

Fr. Clair Girodat, CRFr. Clair Girodat, CR was born in Waterloo, Ontario in 1936. He attended St. Jerome’s High School and after studies at St. Peter’s Seminary in London he was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1963. After his ordination, he began his teaching career at St. Jerome’s High School. He also taught at St. John’s College, Brantford, St. Jerome’s College, Waterloo and

St. Mary’s College, St. Mary, Kentucky. Besides being a teacher, Fr. Clair was a popular coach. In 1970, he earned an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Detroit and later a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Toronto. After he left teaching, Fr. Clair served as Rector of the Toronto House of Theology and Novice Master for the Congregation of the Resurrection (Ontario-Kentucky and U.S.A. Provinces) for three years. Fr. Clair also ministered as Chaplain for the Notre Dame Sisters at their Motherhouse in Waterdown for five years.

In 2009, Fr. Clair retired to Resurrection Manor. He currently resides at Hilltop Manor Retirement Residence. When asked what the highlights of his life were, Fr. Clair responded: “my ordination and religious life. I had the notion early in life that I wanted to be a priest and the occasion of my ordination was the fulfillment of my dream.” Fr. Clair also noted: “the ministries I have been involved with were very life giving and affirming. I enjoyed parish life, teaching and coaching high school students as well.”

We offer congratulations to Fr. Clair, and thank him for fifty years of dedicated service as a member of the Congregation of the Resurrection.

Greetings from the Tanzanian Mission Fr. Andrzej Mądry, CR

I want to share with you some news from our Mission. When we started our Resurrectionist Mission in Tanzania, East Africa in 2002, we never thought that we would arrive at this point. We only had a hope that God would help us. We are happy to already have Tanzanians who have become members of our religious community.

Last year on September 15th, in Kahangala, three young men professed their first religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, after finishing a year-long novitiate. They are John, Mosses and Michal. Our Superior General, Very Rev. Bernard Hylla, CR came for this special moment for us and for all CRs. During the Mass, families of our new members were present and also many parishioners. Michel and Mosses are continuing their formation in Kahangala. John started his study of philosophy at the Salvatorian Institute in Morogoro.

Now in Tanzania we are working in three places:• Butiama Parish, Musoma diocese. This was our first mission in Tanzania, beginning in 2002. Butiama is a small town and has now become the headquarters of a new District. It has eleven outposts. The parish priest is Fr. Maciej Braun, CR.

• Kahangala Parish, Mwanza Archdiocese. We started working here in 2008. Kahangala is a village; most of the people are farmers. The parish

priest is Fr. Andrzej Madry, CR in a parish that has 24 outposts. Fr. Daniel Hinc, CR is helping him and learning the Swahili language. Fr. Daniel came to Tanzania last August. There also are Bro. Mosses Kitikiro, CR and Bro. Michael Juma, CR.

• Morogoro. It is the place where the Salvatorian College for Philosophy & Theology for more than 20 different Religious Communities is located. Fr. Andrzej Duda, CR is the Director of Formation for our Community and teaches in the College. Seminarian John Nyarufunjo, CR is a student in his first year. We also have a postulant with us, Denis Sylvanus, a first year student.

Hopefully, two other young men are going to start their formation program with us this year. We are continuing t o r e c e i v e requests from candidates who want to become Resurrectionists. Some of them are still studying in
