This shows that the majority of the people taking my questionnaire were within my target audience age range therefore the results to this questionnaire are useful in helping me understand what my target audience want in a psychological thriller film.

These are the films I associate most with being similar to my own synopsis and style. Therefore I asked my target audience which ones they have watched so I can then decide which ones I’m going to take for inspiration. Here, I see that all of them have been watched by at least one questionnaire participant asides from Mystic River. Therefore I will not be taking any inspiration from this film. Se7en, Shutter Island, Gone Girl, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are the films most watched by my target audience so I will mainly be using these films for inspiration.

Reactions to Syn-opsis

Because my target audience has given a mainly positive reaction to my synopsis which shows it is a success. However most of the ‘both’ reactions mention that I need to develop the synopsis a bit in order for it to come off as more original. Others also suggested I give a reason for my protagonist not to contact the police. Another issues I found from looking at the ‘positive’ reactions was that a lot of people were referring to the synopsis as ‘spooky’ and ‘creepy’. This is bad because the genre for my film is psychological thriller therefore I need to make sure it does not give off a horror genre feel that will make most viewers confused. From the question ‘would this film interest you?’ received a majority of ‘yes’ answers, I at least know that the concept of the film interests my target audience.

The most popular of these titles was ‘The Missing’ which means I will name my film after this as it’s what my target audience believes is the best title for my film. Second to this was ‘Mind Games’ and ‘Wicked Games’ which, although suit the genre of psychological thriller, maybe give off too much of a horror genre vibe. Therefore ‘The Missing’ is the best title suited for my film.

The most popular font for my film marketing material was the first font. Because of this, my font design will be based off this font style. But just in case it turns out this font style does not suit my poster or trailer, I will change it to one of the fonts voted in second place.

From these results, I can see that my target audience believes the most important part of a trailer is not giving too much away. Because of this, I will prioritise this aspect of my trailer as from looking into the success of previous movie trailers, I can see that trailers such as ‘Terminator Salvation’ and ‘The Arrival’ were unsuccessful because they gave too much of the film’s plot away and didn’t leave much for the audience to be excited about. The second most voted for points were ‘soundtrack’ and ‘introduction to the plot’ which I will prioritise as the second most important. Soundtrack is important because not only does it draw suspense into the trailer but can also make the trailer more memorable, trailers like ‘Inception’ and ‘Interstellar’ are very memorable because of Hans Zimmer’s enjoyable score. Introduction to the plot is also one of the key elements of the trailer as it shows the audience what the film is about. But this isn’t entirely important as there has been successful trailers in the past that reveal very little about the film’s plot and draw in an audience through curiosity. This would be apply to trailers such as the ‘Alien’ trailer or ‘A Cure for Wellness’.

From here, I can see that the first colour scheme was the most popular amongst my target audience therefore this is the colour scheme I will use as not only was it the most popular but it is also the best that conveys the dark tones of my psychological thriller film.

This was the list of films my target audience gave me as being their favourite psychological thriller films. From these I can get an idea of the type of film my target audience is interested in. However, I do need to take into account that some of these listed films are not psychological thriller films. Some of them are action films whilst others are horror, some of them are not even psychological.
