COVID-19 response updateBusinesses are beginning to re-open, and many people in our community are resuming their normal activities, but the COVID-19 response at Parkland is far from over. Parkland stands prepared to receive any patients with COVID-19, and leadership is committed to keeping you informed. • Employees will continue to be provided masks at the hospital and old Parkland campus.• If you work in a non-clinical environment, you may wear a cloth mask in accordance with the Dallas County guidelines.• Employees must wear a mask at all times while in public areas in a Parkland facility (with the exception of eating and

drinking). PATIENTS

Each week, we will feature an employee who has gone above and beyond in service to our community during the COVID-19 response. This week’s COVID hero is Juana (Salome) Acosta, Mental Health Counselor, Homeless Medical Outreach Services (HOMES).

“One of the homeless shelters we serve was shut down recently due to active COVID-19 infections. As a result, all of the residents were moved to a hotel for quarantine. Salome worked endlessly doing virtual calls for the residents in quarantine at the hotel. She and the Behavioral Health team noted a troubling pattern – clients expressing an increase in depression and anxiety due to isolation and the loss of enriching activities they were previously receiving. She sprang into action and led a Parkland team to gather donations that would help replace the activities they lost. She engaged her cousin to assist, and together they collected a significant pool of donations from friends, families and a few agencies. Within a mere weekend, a large number of games, crosswords puzzles, books, etc., for the children and adults were delivered to the hotel. A few examples of the responses from guests were, ‘My child was getting into everything and this helped,’ and ‘It took the edge off a little. We appreciate it.’ Although Salome only recently completed her first 90 days with Parkland, she has gone above and beyond her role on the team in response to the effects of the COVID-19 crisis. She has really shown innovation in developing ways to deliver virtual Behavioral Health services to our very vulnerable patients. She has a great and infectious attitude that helps others elevate their performance to excellence. Her willingness to think outside the box is a much-needed asset to the team at this time.”

u Engagement Best Practice Spotlight: Julie PoseyEach month, the Employee Engagement Task Force features a Parkland team member representing the engagement and leadership best practices we strive to achieve to effectively serve our patients, employees and community. Our goal is to learn from these inspirational leaders and spread the word about their impact.

Unit Manager Julie Posey has worked at Parkland for seven years, starting as a staff nurse before being promoted to Manager at the Urgent Care Center. She describes her management style as a blended approach that changes based on the situation. She keeps her staff engaged by regularly expressing appreciation for their work. This includes giving out cards for birthdays or just to say thank you. She also hands out gift cards for the Park Market.

Julie offers a “shout out” to staff on a weekly basis and works to keep team members engaged in meetings. For example, the team will play “Jeopardy” with meaningful information and relevant topics for their department. She encourages team members to be actively involved at Parkland, suggesting they participate in sub-committees and shared governance groups. The team also participates in potlucks, decorating and playing games for the holidays.

Julie prevents burnout for her team by encouraging them to take time off and maintaining a positive work/life balance. She also likes to coordinate friendly competitions within the department, such as the “stair challenge,” where staff will take the stairs the whole day instead of the elevator.

She lives in Greenville, with a 1- to 2-hour drive to and from work. When asked why she commutes to Parkland, she simply states without hesitation, “I love working at Parkland! And I love my team!”

Julie, thank you for all you do. Your commitment to your staff is a great example for all of us at Parkland.
