lung elasticity▪ Diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax▪ Intrapulmonary volume decreases▪ Gas pressure increases▪ Gases passively flow out to equalize the pressure▪ Forced expiration can occur mostly by contraction of

internal intercostal muscles to depress the rib cage
