K-2 HAD A FANTASTIC TIME AT THE FROLIC

    A MESSAGE FROM LUCY

Over the past few weeks we have had some wonderful events which have highlighted just how lucky we are to be part of the Cootamundra Public School community.

Firstly, our annual fete was a great success, with friends and family enjoying all of the delights that were on offer during the day. I would like to extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to our hard working P&C executive, CPRs, parent and community helpers, staff and students. Your efforts lead to an event our school can be really proud of!

Last week, our K-2 community enjoyed a fun night of dancing and catching up with friends at the K-2 Frolic. We were so impressed with the effort all the students had put in to learn each of the dances! Well done!

Also last week, our school ran a fundraising drive for Cootamundra Drought Relief. We were overwhelmed with the generous donations of toys, Christmas food, pantry items and gold coins. Thank you to each and every person who contributed to this fundraiser – your generosity will go towards helping drought affected families and communities this Christmas. Thank you for making a difference!

    SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR

Next week, 12 of our talented dancers will be travelling to Sydney for the 2018 Schools Spectacular. This is an incredible opportunity for our students to be a part of an outstanding showcase of the talent in NSW public schools. Our dance team will be performing as part of a show cast that boasts a 2700 strong choir, 2300 dancers, 80-piece symphony orchestra, stage bands and solo performers. We wish our spec students well and hope they have the experience of a lifetime!

    CHRISTMAS GIVING AT ITS’ BEST

Hannah O’Loughlin, Brooke Ronning, Olivia Philips and Amy-lee Bowditch.

During Genius Hour last term we decided to make Christmas Boxes! We thought making Christmas Boxes would be a good idea after getting the information about them from the Salvation Army staff! We knew that not every child in the world got Christmas presents but we thought they should so we decided to collect all the supplies and started forming the Christmas Boxes. There were many things in the Christmas Boxes such as:

    Toiletries School Supplies Stuffed Toys

We collected our supplies from different stores and created a donation box that helped a lot. People were very generous and donated lots of valuable things that we appreciated.

The CPS Annual P&C Fete is always an exhibition of the community behind our fabulous school and this year was no exception. Apart from the Friday afternoon storm (but didn't we love that rain?!) making early set up an impossibility, Saturday was a glorious day weather-wise. The ten o'clock start was not too early

for the stall holders to get their wares on show, although the Trash and Treasure was of course well attended before opening time and the beautiful cake stall was a priority stop for the discerning buyer! The extra effort afforded by all of our teachers and staff never ceases to amaze for the Fete, and the enthusiasm of the students to tend stalls, create goods and participate in events is the best part of the day. Thank you to ALL of the helpers - be you P&C, staff, grandparents, friends dragged in to assist or one of those long suffering partners of any of the previous. Your work before, on and after this mega event cannot be under appreciated. Without you there is no Fete. We also had a great variety of sponsors this year for the raffle and Chocolate Wheel and these groups are:

Dubbo Western Plains Taronga Zoo Questacon South West Fuels Caltex Fuels Cootamundra The Base Store The Arts Centre Cootamundra Planted Cootamundra Conundrum Horse Handling Mitre 10 Cootamundra Cootamundra Butchery Bassingthwaighte Livestock Marketing Muddy Pig Pastured Pork

A special thank you to Sharon Shoard for so many beautiful photographs and to Kellie Johnson for her last CPS cake stall (and the great facebook photos). The boys from Mrs Mackie Bailey's garden club did a wonderful presentation on oils and the day was filled with entertainment from Bollywood, to Christine Wisharts dancers, finalised with a stirring display by Kumiai Ryu students. Thank you Dale Thompson who agreed to MC but was under-required on the day! Also thanks to Viv and Tony Pavert who opened their garden for CPS donations and had a beautiful afternoon of showing people around. Alice Crawford you will be sorely missed as a sounding board and a fantastic cook for the fete canteen service. No doubt CPS will find lots of requirements to spend the fete income on and we hope that everyone enjoyed it enough to come back next year! Julie Cowell P&C President

    ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Parents or caregivers are required by law to provide an explanation to the principal to say why their child was absent from school.

A note of explanation should contain: • Date that the note was written • Child’s name • Days/dates the child was absent from school • The reason the child was absent • The signature of the child’s parent or caregiver. If more than one child from the same family has been absent a separate note for each child should be written. A note should be brought to school on the first day the student returns to school after an absence. Your school is required to investigate all unexplained absences (where a child has been absent and no explanation has been received) within two days. Did your child give the note to their teacher? This can sometimes be a problem with younger children.

    COOTAMUNDRA STRINGS AN INVITATION

Cootamundra Strings is a new Orchestra providing a opportunities for young students of Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass.

For the education and enjoyment of the students as well as the enrichment and entertainment of the community.

We would like to invite any young players within the surrounding area to join us. All students are welcome.

Our rehearsals are held at The Arts Centre Cootamundra on Thursday afternoons from 4.00 pm

For term 4 2018 fees are $5 per week.

For more information please contact our music director Katie Spicer 0423 177 015 Katie commenced teaching violin and cello in Picton NSW, and in 1999 started gathering groups of 20 and upwards young string players together for occasional performances at the local festival and nursing home. In 2005 she formed a string orchestra of mostly primary aged students and began regular weekly rehearsals. The group had a very busy calendar of performances, often as many as 10 each school term including local fundraising events, festivals, local council events, school tours, and nursing homes. By 2011 “Picton Strings” had 2 orchestras of 17 to 27 players compiled of students from 13 local and regional schools. In 2008 and 2009 in collaboration with the Australian Youth Orchestra, they held string and improvisation workshops. With the participation of Sydney Symphony Orchestra musicians they held Chamber music and Orchestral workshops that included all string, wind and percussion students from the local district. Katie also arranged holiday workshops with high profile string teachers from Australia and the USA. Most years included collaboration with local public schools for some of their students to participate in the Arts Unit performances at the Sydney Opera House. She also organised and accompanied groups of students to Sydney Symphony Orchestra performances. In 2010 the Australian Chamber Orchestra began a 4 year long program with Picton Strings. This included having their musicians working with members of the orchestra as well as running an outstanding free music program at Picton Public School. This culminated in a performance at the Sydney Town Hall with the members of Picton Strings performing a concert alongside musicians from the ACO. In 2011 Katie was honoured to receive an award as part of Picton’s Australia Day celebrations. Katie has recently moved to Cootamundra and looking forward to working with the wonderful local young players.
