Newsletter 3 Wednesday, 31 October 2018

The end of an era... Two weeks ago, we celebrated the long and illustrious career of an outstanding teacher, Mrs Fiona Crawford.

Fiona completed her teacher training at the Goulburn Teacher’s College and went on to further training in

Canberra. She commenced her early teaching career at Thirlmere PS. From here, Fiona moved to Ganmain PS

and then onto Junee. In 1985, she took the position of Teaching Principal at Bibbenluke Public School. After a

period of leave Fiona then went to work at St Joseph’s until 2001. In 2001 she commenced at Bombala PS,

beginning as a temporary teacher and shortly afterwards gaining a permanent position.

During her career, Fiona has worked across all classes incorporating many roles, from classroom teacher

through to executive level. She has been a very proud and strong advocate for all students in Public Education

and many would attest to the fact that she has epitomised all that Public Education stands for. Throughout the

years, she has promoted not only academic excellence but excellence across the sporting arena, encouraging all

students to aim high to achieve their personal best. Fiona has held all positions in the Bombala District Primary

School Sports Association (PSSA) – wholeheartedly supporting and often being the organiser of sports carnivals

for Bombala, Delegate, Bibbenluke, Ando and St Joseph’s schools.

Fiona has been a well respected and wonderful colleague. She has been a mentor to practicum and beginning

teachers, a guide, a coach and above all

passionate and supportive; always willing

to share resources, and her depth of

experience and knowledge.

Fiona, we sincerely thank you for all you

have been and all you have done. We

acknowledge your dedication to the

students in your care and to the Public

Education system you have promoted from

the beginning of your career through to

your retirement.

We congratulate you on your well deserved

retirement and wish you the very best for a

happy and relaxing future.

From Jo’s Desk... Dear Parents and Community Members Congratulations Bombala Public School! It has been wonderful to hear back from the venues visited throughout excursion week about the good behaviour and manners of our students. Well done to all participating students and staff members. Please check the Bombala Public School Facebook page to see photos from Excursion Week. Next week Year 5 students head off to Canberra to visit the Australian Electoral Centre and Parliament House as they study Australian Democracy.

On Monday we celebrated World Teacher’s Day. Thank you to the teaching staff of our school who work so diligently and with great dedication to provide our students with varied learning experiences in a caring, supportive environment. Remember, teaching is not just about learning in the classroom, it also includes the extra-curricular activities the staff coordinate and organise for our students. The role of the teacher is very diversified and is continually changing. World Teacher’s Day is best summed up by a quote from Sidney Hook: “Everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers, not methods and techniques. The teacher is the heart of the educational system” Thank you Bombala Public School Teachers for the great job you do!

Next Monday 5th November students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the Bombala Cricket Cup. We are delighted to have seven teams across Stages 2 and 3 competing in a great day of cricket games. Yesterday we welcomed our 2019 Kindergarten students for the second part of their Orientation program. The Orientation Program will continue over the next three weeks with the last day culminating in a sausage sizzle for new Kinder students and their families. We warmly invite all families and community members to the whole school assembly this Friday at 12.30 in the

High School Hall. As there are many activities occurring this term, we will only have two assemblies until

Presentation Day. This week Kindergarten, Year 1/2 and Year 2/3/4 students will be performing. We look

forward to seeing you as we celebrate the achievement of our students.

Until next week Kind regards Jo

Year 3/4 Excursion to Canberra 25th and 26th October 2018

Year’s 3 and 4 had a fantastic overnight excursion to Canberra last week, staying at the Leumeah Lodge. The food was great, staff were very welcoming and the accommodation top notch. We managed to pack in a huge amount of activities over the two days. We visited the National Zoo and Aquarium, Arboretum, War Memorial and played fluro-golf on day one. We followed this up with a visit to the Mint and Questacon on day two and finally travelled home exhausted but very happy. Many thanks go to Mrs Brazel, Sharon Hampshire and Mick Sullivan for helping with the supervision.

Please read some of the children’s thoughts on the excursion below:

Mrs Moreing - organising teacher.

My favourite part of the excursion...

Maicey- going to the zoo and seeing the Snow Leopards, the sharks and holding the snake.

Cyrus – the zoo and my favourite animals were the smallest monkeys in the world.

Lucy - the Zoo and Questacon.

Hayden- the yummy food at the Lodge, and the monkeys because they were very naughty. At the Mint I saw an invisible coin!

Piper - Fluro Golf and Questacon. In Fluro Golf you, your golf balls and some of the tracks light up.

Fred – when Cyrus said, “ Pancake-time, Pancake-time,” in the middle of the night and woke all our room up.

Nakeiyah- Fluro-Golf and Questacon. I can’t wait for the next excursion.

Jack – not sleeping at night because we had so much fun.

Beau and Joey- We liked the drop-slide at Questacon best. It was scary, but fun. There was a big lightning bolt there too.

Emma – We went in the War Memorial – WOW!!!, it was fantastic!

Chavez – Fluro-golf was the best. When I first started it was so easy but then it got harder and harder. The last hole was so easy I got it first shot.

In their own words

On the Canberra excursion I really enjoyed going to the zoo because I saw lots of cool and cute animals that I

have never seen before. I saw very cute little monkeys and my favourite animal was the snow leopard. The

zoo keeper told me that the girl snow leopards are the boss, not the boys. The hyenas were very smart and

they work as a team to get their food. – Meisha

I really enjoyed the fluoro golf because it was fun and because it was golf. – Gabe

On the Canberra excursion I enjoyed the National Zoo and Aquarium because of the sort of animals we saw

like the snow leopard and the sun bear. I also liked the fluoro golf because it was glow in the dark and it was

a challenge. Last but not least, the lodge because of its food and the rooms. I really liked the Canberra

excursion. – Hayden

When we went on the Canberra excursion we went to the National Zoo and Aquarium. I liked the monkeys,

fish, snow leopard, tigers, snakes, hyenas, lions, emu, deer and the peacock. – Paddy

I really enjoyed the fluoro golf because it was really fun when you got to do all the obstacles. I also enjoyed

Questacon and when we got to play in the playground. I also enjoyed the War Memorial because of the

tanks that they used in the War. – Josh

My favourite activity about the Canberra excursion was the fluoro golf because I got to hang out with my friends

and challenge myself against the rest of my team. I also liked how if you were wearing white or a fluoro colour

you would glow. – Dakota

I really enjoyed the War Memorial because I liked the history and the tanks that they were using in the War. -

Jakob
