From the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Labour Day Holiday Students are not required at school on Monday, 9th March due to the Labour Day Holiday.

School Uniforms

School Council have been working hard to assess our options in relation to a new school uniform supplier. This

process takes time, particularly given that we are looking to make a long-term decision that requires us to consider

quality, value for money and ease of access for purchasing/ordering. We will have a final decision by the end of

term. This will allow parents to place orders during the holidays or early next term at the latest. During the next few

weeks, and as the weather cools, please feel free to send your child to school in a casual jumper/windcheater if you

don’t currently have access to a school one. If possible, green or black jumpers would be preferred. As mentioned

previously, we will have a suitable timeframe to transition into these new uniforms. School Council are yet to

decide how long this will be. By the way, our logo will have a small but important addition, as we will now be

including our new school motto - ‘Be Awesome’.

MUSIC AWARD Reagan W – 5/6 Lockett: for showing maturity and leadership skills in Music and Choir.

Thanks for your understanding as we deal with this unexpected change in our uniform supplier.

School Council 2020 I’m pleased to advise the school community that our School Council welcomes two new parent members; Mrs

Belinda Smith and Mr Peter Bourke. I’m sure Belinda and Peter will be valuable contributors to our school and

community. Further details relating to School Council, including returning members and office bearers, will be

included in next week’s newsletter.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

As you will be aware, our school is continuing to implement School Wide Positive Behaviour Support. We are

making good progress and believe this program will great for our school. Below is some information that might

help you understand what it is all about.

What is School Wide Positive Behaviour Support?

The purpose of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is to establish a school climate in which

appropriate behaviour is the norm for all students. It provides school communities with an effective evidence based

approach to creating positive and engaging school environments.

SWPBS provides educational leaders with a school improvement framework for ensuring that the learning

environment of their school is focused on creating a positive regard and engagement. The framework requires the

establishment of school wide expectations that are developed in collaboration with all school community members.

SWPBS focuses on data and inquiry to drive continuous improvement in the school’s behaviour management

processes and policies.

Please keep an eye out for updates relating to SWPBS over the coming weeks and months.

Congratulations to our Prep Students Our Prep students are now well into their full time schooling. I must congratulate them on a fabulous start to the

year. I enjoy visiting their classrooms and sharing their learning and enthusiasm. It is amazing how quickly they

absorb new learnings and information. I particularly love having them visit my office with work that they are so

proud of that they could burst. Special thanks to our fantastic Prep team and all families for enabling such a great start to the year.

Student Enrolment Information Form These have been emailed to parents today to ensure that the information we have is correct and up to date.

Please check each item on the form. If there is any information that is incorrect please print the form, write updated

information next to each item where necessary and return the signed form to the office. We will then update our

records.

Please remember to provide the school with any updated information as soon as your circumstances change.

Early School Finish End of Term Term 1 concludes on Friday, 27th March. Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm. An assembly is scheduled for

2.15pm on the Friday and students will be dismissed from the assembly area. The bus will be collecting the children

an hour earlier on this day, so parents can expect their child to be dropped off at their bus stop an hour earlier than

normal. Term 2 commences on Tuesday, 14th April.

A leaflet from our photo company will be sent home with all students tomorrow. This leaflet provides instructions

relating to ordering your child’s individual and family photos online. The school is not involved in any of the

ordering or money. If you have any difficulties, please contact Leading Image Photography on 1300 084 586.

School Photo Day is on Wednesday 25th March.

Learning Task 2 Released Tomorrow

Learning Task 2 (Term 1) will be released to families tomorrow at 3:15pm. This task is entitled Approaches to

Learning. The Approaches to Learning task is designed to provide families with an insight into how their child has

settled into the school year, from the perspective of the classroom.

What families should see in this Learning Task:

1. A comment from your child’s teacher.

2. A 'goal setting' document, completed by the student. Each student had the opportunity to identify a goal/s

for the year or semester.

3.

Urban Camp

I was lucky enough to go on a mini ‘holiday’, (as I think it was termed by Mr Trezise last week) and attend Urban

Camp with Grade 6. Our students, as always, did an outstanding job representing our school. The program was very

full but everyone powered through, supported each other and made the most of the experiences. Thanks to Peta

Dougal and Kate Edwards for coming along to support the group as parents. Thanks also to all of the staff involved,

in particular, Mr Daenke, who put a power of work into organising this experience for our students.

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

‘Over the past week we have been discussing emotions, what they look like and feel like.

During one lesson we looked at drawings of different emotions. Then we got one picture of an

emotion each and thought about a time we had experienced that feeling. We also discussed that

the skill of noticing how other people feel is important.  - 1/2 Arthur’

German News

Respect for the Environment at SGPS

Did you know we collect and recycle all our soft plastic at Spring Gully Primary School?

All the chip packets, clingwrap, muesli bar wrappers and zip lock bags go into a special pink bag in the classroom.

Once a fortnight these bags are collected, sorted and taken to a Coles or Woolworths supermarket where they are

placed into a special soft plastic recycle bin. You can collect your soft plastics at home too.

Here is 3/4 Murphy with 16 bags of soft plastic they have saved from going into landfill.

Great job, kids!

German Christmas Concert 2019

Active Travel News

National Ride2School Day Friday 13 March

Next Friday is National Ride2School Day – a special day to celebrate active travel to school whether it’s riding,

walking, scooting, unicycling or even skating.

Students from schools around Australia will be pumping up their tyres and lacing up their runners, maybe even

adding some decoration to their bikes and scooters.

Never tried riding or walking before? Have a practise over the weekend to make sure you know the way and check

how long it takes. Think about how you might deal with any potential tricky spots along the way, like road

crossings.

Live too far away? Pop a scooter in the car and scoot or walk along the trail from Stanley Avenue or the cricket

oval; both of these spots have good parking.

Next week, instead of our WoW Wednesday count, we’ll do a special HandsUp! count on Ride to School Day. This

will still count towards the active travel trophy, which will be awarded to the class with the most active travellers at

the end of term. Be in it for your class!

Fresh Fruit Friday

Every Friday morning, we are able to supply all our students with fruit. If you ever have free time on Friday

mornings after school drop off, to help us chop up and deliver this fruit to the classroom, please come and join

in. A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who help with this every week. Your assistance is greatly

appreciated. Fruit preparation takes place in the canteen area. All welcome.

Welcome Picnic Due to the wet weather our Welcome Picnic is being postponed until next Thursday the 12th of March on the

bottom oval, from 5-7pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet some new people, catch up with old friends

and come together as a community. Easter We will be again holding our annual Easter Raffle, which will be drawn after the Easter Hat parade on the last day

of school. Raffle tickets will be sent out to families shorty so please keep an eye out for them. We would like to kindly ask families for donations for prizes. A small egg, craft activity, book, basket or bag to

create some wonderful prizes would be greatly appreciated. These can be popped into the box provided in the

office area. This is traditionally one of our most successful fundraising activities for the year, so your support is

greatly appreciated.
