Our newsletter is published at the beginning of each month on the first Friday after our administra- tive and governing board meetings. It will be sent to all member school district administrators and governing board representatives. We ask again that it be shared and forwarded to all teachers and to all school board members. Succeed 2020 Project Director Greetings! In early spring/summer 2014, the Mid-Dakota Education Cooperative (MDEC) invited directors and counselors to take part in a collaborative working group focused on suicide prevention and, more spe-cifically, developing suicide prevention resources for our schools. The goal was to gain the capacity to inform as many school personnel as possible about risk factors, warning signs, and response/referral procedures for suicide prevention. The result of these meetings is that flip charts were designed for counselors and teachers, along with a fold-away card for parents, to use as a ready resource and as a tool to help with conversations about suicide prevention. RESP is also offering a suicide prevention class with Kara Soifer, MDEC, who was trained to speak about Question Persuade Refer (QPR) for Suicide Prevention. Please mark your cal-endars and register for this important training to be held on December 2

nd, 2014. It is our goal to have

one or two (2) representatives (one of which should be the counselor) from each school at the training. Space is limited to 25 people and as that fills, we have the option of opening a second session for the afternoon. The cost is $25 per person. The registration number on escWorks is 30922. We received verification this month that funding for RESP Succeed 2020 has been approved for the year and we are continuing to move forward with the goals in our work plan. Succeed 2020 also will hold it’s statewide convening on October 29th-30th in Bismarck. While the itinerary has not been offi-cially set, we do know that we will be learning more about data and also given the opportunity to meet and collaborate with the other REAs within the state about topics relevant to RESP. Respectfully, Yvonn Weigel-Frank

Energy: Powered by North Dakota This is a fantastic, FREE opportunity to learn about a new online ND energy curriculum for 4th and 8th grad-ers. It is also eligible for a FREE graduate credit! I wanted to let you know about a workshop that’s free and open for teachers on October 16-17 in Bismarck, N.D. The workshop is for a new curriculum which is going to be rolled out next month – Energy: Powered by North Dakota. This curriculum, created for North Dakota Studies classes, is about 2-weeks long and is divided into Level 1 (4th grade standards) and Level 2 (8th grade standards). It’s web-based, so there are lots of videos, pictures, maps and career information about the energy industry – so hopefully it will appeal to many teachers! The workshop is open for K-12 teachers, pre-service teachers and career counselors as well. Information on the curriculum project and the tentative workshop agenda is posted at the link, below: http://www.energynd.com/energy-curriculum/. The workshop is 15 hours and qualifies for a free graduate credit through Valley City State University. Please pass this on to anyone in your network that you think would be interested. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Upcoming ND LEAD Workshops

Instructional Leadership Academy has been the most successful leadership course for LEAD over the past 20 plus years and is still a must for any principal. Now, with North Dakota implementing the PTESS Guidelines for teacher evaluations, it has never been more important and publicly visible. This course is divided into three phases so participants will develop a background on effective learning theory, observation skills, providing feedback through effective conferences, and review an effective teacher super-vision plan. Learning theory will be connected to the major evaluation models such as Danielson, Marshall and Marzano. Participants will practice skills in simulations during the workshop and actually use the skills in their schools. Three (3) optional credits This fits in with ISLLC Standard No. 2, Promotes the Success of all students …instructional program condu-cive to student learning and staff professional growth. Phase 1 – October 8-9, 2014 – Mandan Phase 2 – November 5-6, 2014 – Mandan Phase 3 – January 21-22, 2015 – Mandan Effective Communication Skills for Leaders II/(Crucial Confrontations) – This is growing into one of our most popular workshops because the skills taught here are needed in so many areas. This workshop teach-es a straightforward step-by-step process for: identifying and resolving performance gaps, strengthening accountability, eliminating inconsistency and reducing resentment. Learn to hold people accountable, mas-ter face-to-face performance discussions, motivate without using power, enable without taking over, and move to action. Access to Digital Library Preview

The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) wishes to inform you of an opportunity for teachers in your district to receive temporary access to a preview of the Smarter Balanced Digital Library (DL) from now until approxi-mately October 2014. North Dakota has adopted the Smarter Balanced assess-ment as the operational North Dakota State Assessment effective with the 2014-15 school year. The DL comple-ments and supports the Smarter Balanced assessment as a resource of instructional materials, supporting the forma-tive assessment process and creating professional learn-ing communities among educators in Smarter Balanced member states. The DL will be available only to teachers from Smarter Balanced member states and requires that teachers be registered to access the DL. With your approval, DPI will obtain a list of teachers on record in PowerSchool for your district and enter their names and emails into the Digital Library registration sys-tem so that teachers can have a preview of the DL before it becomes fully operational in October 2014. To indicate your approval, please specify your district and your approval at the link below: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DLpreview Once the teachers are entered into the DL system, they will receive an email with their user ID and temporary password. Additional information from DPI will be sent in October of 2014 when the DL becomes fully operational. At that time DPI will facilitate the process of reinstating all teachers for access to the DL. In the meantime, please indicate in the web link above if you would like your teachers to have temporary access to preview the DL. If you have any questions concerning this DL preview opportunity for your teachers, please contact Robert Bauer, North Dakota State Assessment Coordinator at (701) 328-2224 or [email protected].

North Dakota Museum of Art The North Dakota Museum of Art will begin touring its newest Rural Arts exhibition titled A Walk in the Woods. Bookings are first come, first serve. Just in Time Mathematics Statewide Professional Development

For Grade 4-8 Teachers

With the implementation of the new North Dakota State Standards for Mathematics, teachers will be teach-ing math content that was not previously taught until upper middle level or high school to grades 4-8 stu-dents. Some of the content and methodology of the Standards has changed and will be new to teachers. Briars (2014) describes the need for professional development in order for successful rollout of the stand-ards. Without this teachers are limited in their ability to even evaluate appropriate and high quality re-sources. According to Joyce and Showers (1996), in order to ensure successful implementation of knowledge to practice, instructional coaching is a key and apart of this professional development. This pro-ject seeks to:

▪ Increase mathematical content knowledge aligned to North Dakota State Standards for Mathematics with

a focus on deep understanding and the use of manipulatives

▪ Increase teacher knowledge and application of the eight mathematical practices as aligned to the North Dakota State Standards for Mathematics and of best teaching and learning practices in general

▪ Increase teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation through instructional coaching

▪ Improve student learning and understanding of mathematics
