Technology in the Early Years Foundation Stage The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage sets the standards for learning development and care from birth to five. Within the "Understanding the World" area of learning and development there is a specific technology learning goal: "Children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes." In Early Years Outcomes, a non-statutory guide for practitioners and inspectors to help inform understanding of child development through the early years (Department for Education, September 2013), typical development in technology is described as follows: Birth to 20 months

The beginnings of understanding technology lie in babies exploring and making

sense of objects and how they behave.

16 to 26 months

Anticipates repeated sounds, sights and actions, e.g. when an adult demonstrates

an action toy several times.

Shows interest in toys with buttons, flaps and simple mechanisms and beginning to

learn to operate them.

22 to 36 months

Seeks to acquire basic skills in turning on and operating equipment.

Operates mechanical toys, e.g. turns the knob on a wind-up toy or pulls back on a

friction car.

30 to 50 months

Knows how to operate simple equipment.

Shows an interest in technological toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects.

Shows skill in making toys work by pressing parts or lifting flaps to achieve effects

such as sound, movements or new images.

Knows that information can be retrieved from computers.

40 to 60+ months

Completes a simple program on a computer.

Interacts with age-appropriate computer software.

Using ICT in EYFS Personal, Social and Emotional development

Have a strong exploratory impulse Link to ‘show an interest in ICT’

Show increasing independence in selecting and carrying out activities

Selecting computer-based activities, clicking on a program icon, changing an activity on the screen, using a camera

Persist for extended periods of time at an activity of their choosing

Completing a computer-based game or activity, trying again when something goes wrong

Seek out others to share experiences Showing a picture/game completed on screen

Have an awareness of the boundaries set and behavioural expectations within the setting

Teaching rules about using the computer, digital camera etc, learning to take turns, looking after equipment

Communication, language and literacy

Use words and/or gestures, including body language such as eye contact and facial expression, to communicate

Telephone role play, digital video

Listen to favourite nursery rhymes, stories and songs. Join in with repeated refrains,

Talking Books, Big Books /CD player; record children speaking and singing on MP3 player/computer

Respond to simple instructions Mouse click, drag; pressing Beebot keys, following on screen instructions, turning the page in a talking book

Question why things happen, and give explanations Teacher modelling; children asking about how/why things happen on screen or with technology around them

Build up vocabulary that reflects the breadth of their experiences

Explicit teaching/use of ICT related vocabulary

Enjoy rhyming and rhythmic activities Websites and activities with songs and music

Understand the concept of a word Following and clicking words highlighted in Talking Book

Show interest in illustrations and print in books and print in the environment

Talk about pictures/images on screen

Know that information can be retrieved from books and computers

Ask for the story on the computer

Draw and paint, sometimes giving meanings to marks Using a paint package, compare to ‘real’ paint

Use writing as a means of recording and communicating Using a “play” keyboard, typewriter, word processor or software such as Clicker

Engage in activities requiring hand-eye co-ordination using a mouse, pointing to something on the screen, drag and drop activities – eg Simple City, My World

Use one-handed tools and equipment Using the mouse, buttons on programmable toys and robots

Manipulate objects with increasing control Mouse, touch screen tablets etc, programmable toys

Mathematical development

Recognise groups with one, two or three objects onscreen interactive task, drag and drop, painting program etc.

Show an interest in shape and space by playing with shapes or making arrangements with objects

On screen simulations –My World, Simple City etc with shape activities and games

Observe and use positional language Drag and Drop simulations and scenes

Use size language such as ‘big’ and ‘little’ on screen activities where size can be changed eg My World

Describe a simple journey BeeBot maps and mats, digital camera record of visit

Instruct a programmable toy BeeBot, Roamer, Remote control bugs etc

Page 4: Resource Pack EYFS - itslearningwebfronter.com/towerhamlets/primaryict/other/LBTH NQT Induction... · Resource Pack EYFS Tutor ... including body language such ... Can be programmed

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Describe simple features of objects and events Digital camera, Computer as a teaching focus

Explore objects Using electronic toys for the first time – switching on and off

Show an interest in why things happen and how things work

Familiar technology around the setting, and images of ther technology

Notice and comment on patterns Digital camera picture; MY World screen, painting package – Snakes and Mazes activity

Show an awareness of change Cooker/microwave/fridge/toaster

Show an interest in ICT Discussion, talking in small groups around the computer, reflecting on ICT experiences

Know how to operate simple equipment Computer, CD player, TV remote control, electronic toys, torch, digital camera, light switches,

Complete a simple program on the computer and/or perform simple functions on ICT apparatus

Appropriate programs and online activities related to topic/own interest

Gain an awareness of the cultures and beliefs of others Use web site as teacher resource/teaching aid; digital camera; online resources with different language options

Physical development

Respond to rhythm, music and story by means of gesture and movement

Web-based musical simulations, onscreen ‘instruments’ talking books, online songs and games

Persevere in repeating some actions/attempts when developing a new skill

Giving opportunity to try again, turn taking

Engage in activities requiring hand-eye co-ordination using a mouse, pointing to something on the screen, drag and drop activites, using a camera

Use one-handed tools and equipment Using the mouse, programmable toys

Understand that equipment and tools have to be used safely

Teaching point, modeling, using electronic toys safely, charging and batteries etc

Creative development

Begin to differentiate colours 2Simple etc paint packages,

Choose particular colours to use for a purpose When using paint packages, recreating famous artworks, skin tones etc

Respond to sound with body movement Online musical resources and games, electronic instruments and keyboards

Use available resources to create props to support role play

Teacher/child creating forms, tickets etc for imaginative play area; mask templates

Try to capture experiences and responses with music, dance, paint and other materials or words

Recording on MP3 player or computer; using digital camera; paint packages
