Academic and administrative staff
The University of Tokyo is a major employer with 10,526 staff
members. Our academic staff numbers 5,914. The University
lists positions as permanent or fixed-term, which applies to
the post, not the person. About two-thirds of academic staff
members (from research assistant to professor in the table)
are in permanent posts and have tenure; the remainder
are on fixed-term contracts. Most other staff members in
permanent posts are on permanent contracts.
Foreign academic and administrative staff
An increasing number of our staff members come from
overseas. Currently, 9% of our faculty are foreign. In
addition, many researchers visit us for short periods,
creat ing an in ternat iona l env i ronment in which our
international staff can feel at home. The figures above
include staff members in both permanent and f ixed-
term positions. The University is also exploring the joint
appointment of faculty with overseas institutions in order to
increase the number of foreign faculty members.

Sciences divisions, or one of three Natural Sciences

Degree programs offered in English
A growing number of graduate-level courses and degree
programs are offered in English. Options in English for
undergraduate students include the four-year degree
program PEAK (Programs in English at Komaba) and the
third-year transfer program GSC (Global Science Course).

Undergraduate education
Undergraduate education at the University of Tokyo is
A competitive environment
Domestic students applying to the University of Tokyo take the
common national university entrance examination, following
which exceptional candidates can choose to take the University's
demanding entrance examination. The number permitted to take
this exam is limited so there can never be more than between
2.5 and five applicants for each position. The dates for graduate
admissions vary widely. Please check the website of each
Faculty or Graduate School for further information (page 28).
On average, about one in four applicants to undergraduate
programs is successful, and 47% to MA programs. Three-
quarters of applicants to PhD programs are successful, but
this includes many students who enroll in combined MA/PhD
programs. Roughly one in two external applicants to PhD
programs is successful.

Enrollment
The University of Tokyo has 27,377 regular students,
roughly evenly d iv ided between undergraduate and
graduate students. Graduate students themselves are
divided almost evenly between MA and PhD programs.
International students number 2,526 or 9% of the total,
with most enrolled in graduate programs. Male students
outnumber female students four to one among domestic
students. Of international students, 57% are male and
43% are female.

Admissions
Students can study at the University of Tokyo as either
regular students (degree candidates) or research students.
Admission is in Apr i l and September. To be el ig ib le
for admission to an undergraduate program, students
should have completed twelve years of formal education
equivalent to that in Japan, or have been awarded an
International Baccalaureate by the International Bureau
of Baccalaureates. (See the PEAK website for entrance
requirements for that program.) To be eligible for an MA
or PhD program, students should have at the t ime of
admission a bachelor's or Master's degree or a level of
education equivalent to that of a Japanese university.
Eligibility for admission to a combined MA and PhD program
is the same as that for an MA program. Students may also
be admitted if the University recognizes that they have
suitable academic background and experience to undertake
their studies. Admission is granted to most programs after a
written examination, but there are a few graduate programs
that accept students on the basis of past academic
attainments, letters of reference and essays. Please contact
the relevant Faculty or Graduate School for more details (see
page 28).

International exchange
Study abroad
University of Tokyo students benefit from a wide range of
academic exchange agreements with other universities. In
2014, 361 students visited our partner universities. Most of
these were graduate students (73%). The University hopes
to increase the number of undergraduates that make use
of exchange opportunities.
International students
In May 2015, 3,062 international students were enrolled
in programs at the University of Tokyo, 536 (18%) as
research students and 2,526 (82%) as full-time students.
Approximately 11% of internat ional students studied
at the undergraduate level, while around 89% studied
at the graduate level. The University is increasing the
number of programs avai lable in Engl ish at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels, so we expect to see
an increase in the number of undergraduate international
students in coming years. Additionally, many students
join us for short periods during their studies at their home
universities.

Campus life
Scholarships
Our domestic and international students are supported
through the University's own scholarships and tuition fee
waivers, and through scholarships from the Japanese
government , compan ies and foundat ions . A la rge
proportion of our international students are funded through
such programs. One of the best places to start looking
for information about scholarships is on our website. The
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) website also
provides details about scholarships and studying in Japan.
Applicants are encouraged to apply for the Japanese
Government (MEXT) scholarships, more information about

Student life
At the University of Tokyo we value our links with society,
and students organize two public festivals that provide
visitors with a glimpse of university life. In addition, the
University holds an annual open campus event which
introduces university life to several thousand high school
students from all over Japan each year. Increasingly,
prospective international students also attend this event.
Students also engage in a variety of sports and cultural
activities through student clubs.
Support for students and researchers
As the preeminent academic institution in Japan, the University
of Tokyo has a long history of nurturing and promoting academic
excellence. The International Center has offices on each of
our main campuses and provides support for international
students and researchers coming to study at the University and
for our students studying at our partner institutions around the
world. The International Center also offers advice on academic
and personal matters, as well as mental health counseling
for individual and family problems. The Center for Japanese
Language Education provides Japanese language education for
international students and researchers. The University Career
Center arranges job fairs and provides information for students
nearing the end of their studies.

Accommodations
Accommodations for students and researchers at the University
of Tokyo are managed by the Housing Office. While University
accommodation reserved for international students can house only a
small portion of those who join us each year, the accommodations
avai lable are increasing and students also have access to
student accommodation managed by other organizations, rooms
in company dormitories and private accommodation. Further

are foreign. The largest portion of foreign books are in
English, but there are also significant collections in other
major languages. There are also over 160,000 journals,
nearly half of which are in foreign languages. The Library
actively purchases materials as required for research and
education. An increasing quantity of material is digitized in
the University Repository.
University Museum
The University Museum is the largest of its kind in Japan,
with a collection of over three million items. The Museum
holds materials to support research and education at
the University of Tokyo gathered since the University's
foundation in 1877, and fixed and mobile exhibitions are
often open to the public.

Research
Research facilities
Excellent facilities support research and education at the
University of Tokyo, including a superb library system,
the University Museum and two major hospitals, which
are also open to the public and are a point of contact
with the local community. Cutting-edge facilities including
supercomputing resources support University members'
research.
University Library System
While the General Library on the Hongo Campus contains
a large collection of books, journals and other materials
in Japanese, English and other languages, the majority
of specialized materials are held in the 32 departmental
libraries that comprise the University Library System. The
Standing on the strong foundations built up by their predecessors, our researchers are consistently at the cutting edge
across the full spectrum of academic endeavor.
University Hospitals
The University of Tokyo has two major hospitals, both of
which were instrumental in the introduction of western
medicine into Japan. The Faculty of Medicine University
Hospital grew out of the Kanda Otamagaike Vaccination
Center founded in 1858, and strives to provide the best
possible individual care. The smaller Institute of Medical
Science Research Hospital was established in 1894 and
specializes in translational research, aiming to bridge the
gap between basic research and the bedside.
Industry and government cooperation and outreach
The University of Tokyo is committed to ensuring the
transfer of our research outcomes to society, and industry
cooperation is one of the most effective means of achieving
this. Nearly 200 Japanese and foreign companies partner
with us and fund almost 100 research projects, a mainstay
of our research and one that provides a significant portion
of research income. To support effective research and
positive outcomes, collaborative research is first evaluated
through the Proprius21 process, which ensures common
understanding of research goals, establishes metrics
and milestones for measuring progress, and determines
ownership of results and intellectual property. In addition,
the best of the University's research is promoted on the

Exchange of researchers
The University of Tokyo has signed over 400 academic
exchange agreements, and our researchers make active
use of these agreements to engage in research throughout
the world. In 2014, researchers from the University of Tokyo
registered 11,469 overseas research visits, and researchers
from other inst i tut ions registered 3,731 visi ts to our
campuses.
Interdisciplinary research
The University of Tokyo promotes both inter- and intra-
university interdisciplinary research, through the establishment
of interdisciplinary institutes such as the Kavli Institute for
the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU),
and networks of researchers from multiple disciplines across
multiple universities, such as the Network for Education and
Research on Asia and the Institute of Gerontology.
International research
The University of Tokyo aims to create a campus that is a
premier platform for education and research and celebrates
the wor ld's diverse cul tures, values, and languages.
Consequently, the University of Tokyo is an important part of
several regional and global university networks to promote
collaboration in research and exchange of researchers,
including the International Alliance of Research Universities
(IARU), the Association of East Asian Research Universities
(AEARU), and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities
(APRU). Some of our world-leading institutes are created as
centers of international cooperation, such as the Kavli IPMU.
Finances
As a national university corporation partly supported by the Japanese public, the University of Tokyo has a responsibility to
ensure the efficient use of funding, and implements effective auditing and transparent accounting practices

government subsidies. Research grants and collaborative
research with industry and government provide an additional
one-third. The University Hospital is another major source
of revenue, accounting for more than one-sixth of the total.
Tuition fees account for approximately 8%.

Over one-third of the total expenditure is spent on research
and research grants. Nearly another third goes to personnel
costs. The remaining major expense is purchasing material
items, which includes all research materials.

Research income
Research income to the University comes from both the public and private sectors. Of the total amount of Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) received from the government, over half is used to support fundamental research, and 16% goes to support young researchers.
Intellectual property
Since university incorporation in 2004, the University of
Tokyo has increased the number of patents held by the
University and by faculty members. Specialized licensing
organizations (Todai TLO, CASTI) have been established
to manage and monetize these patents. Other intellectual
property including trademarks, software copyrights and
other intangible assets provide income to the University.
The University of Tokyo Foundation
The University of Tokyo is supported in part by a range
of gifts and donations from individuals and organizations,
a large proport ion of which are intended for specif ic
purposes. Donations totaling 9 billion yen were received in
financial 2014 by the University as a whole. UTokyo became
a national university corporation in 2004, at which time the
University of Tokyo Foundation was created to support the
University's activities by strengthening its financial base.
The Foundation's current balance is 10 bil l ion yen. In
financial 2014, the Foundation received 12,346 donations
totaling 2.5 billion yen, 53% by value and 97% by number
from individuals. The University is extremely grateful for this
strong public support.
