ASEAN COMMUNITY 2015
• ASEAN Community of Security• ASEAN Community of Economy• ASEAN Community of Social Culture
MABNJ - 64% of the world’s oceans, their seabed and bottom
MGRs - megadiverse, must be managed sustainably
1. To improve organization health on University for good research management and Optimum research achievement and creativity,
2. To empower researchers to share knowledge,3. To work synergically for organization
success,
Research Target Indonesian DGHE
1. Food Sufficiency and Security,2. Agriculture and Estate Crops,3. Poverty Alleviation,4. Nutrition and Tropical Diseases,5. Climate Change,6. Environment and Biodiversity,7. IT,8. Disaster Mitigation and Management,9. Energy and Renewable Energy

Thailand Research Topic
9. Culture and Social research,10. Research on Disaster,
Thailand Research Topic
1. Limited Government budget,2. Low publication number,3. Linkage between research and graduate
education,4. Linkage between research and Industry,5. IT in research management,6. Industrial and other Stake holders
acceptance to research result for linkage and relevance,
Challenges and Future Direction
7. Diverse Universities condition in pursuing research,
8. Low percentage of University Staff earning PhD. Degree.
Challenges and Future Direction
1. International research Collaboration and Publication,
2. Research Center of Excellent (RCOE),3. Integration of Research and Graduate
Education,4. Priorities and varieties Top Down Research
programs,
Indonesian Flagship Program
1. Health and Medicine,2. Agriculture and Food,3. Energy,4. Environment and Biodiversity,5. Social Science,6. Basic Science.
Establishment ASEAN Research Clusters
1. Increase Research Center of Excellent (RCOE),
2. Synergic effort in pursuing research for benefit the Nation and Global society,
3. Research funding based on output and outcome evaluation
Future Direction
MGR surveys
-complex, costly
-developed states lead Developing states and MGR use, mgmt:
- indirectly involved thru their scientists (supportive research) and legislators (policy formulation)
- more as beneficiaries than users
-higher species diversity in subtropics and tropics
- fishery resources not to be overexploited
World fish stocks
- 50% fully exploited
- 20% overexploited
Marine fishery depletion/ overexploitation
- problem in spite implementation of legal frameworks
MGRs screened for potentially useful bioactive compounds for drug development
Use of MGRs(bioprospecting for drug discovery)
development of anti-pain drug : Ziconitide (Prialt)
Conus magnusDr. Baldomero Olivera University of Utah
UNIV. OF THE PHILIPPINES MSI’s INITIATIVES
• 6-year program• aims to develop:
– Anti-infective agents from sponge-associated marine microorganisms (for TB, S aureus infections, possibly HIV)
– Anti-pain agents from turrid snailsEnsure MGR use w/ minimal environmental impact
Local effort but learnings can be applied to policy formulation re: global marine bioprospecting, access and benefit-sharing
• willingness to be involved, trained in international ocean and research
• human capacity building esp in weak areas (e.g. taxonomic research etc.)
• increasing no. of trained pop’n geneticists/molecular geneticists
