The Effectiveness of Yerba Buena as a Natural

Insect/Mosquito Repellant

INTRODUCTION:

Mosquitoes are carriers, or vectors, for some of humanity’s most deadly illnesses, and they are public enemy number one in the fight against global infectious disease. Mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, filariasis, encephalitis, West Nile virus, yellow fever, and dengue cause millions of deaths worldwide every year with a disproportionate effect on children and the elderly in developing countries( http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/bugs/mosquito/)

An increasing mortality and morbidity rate worldwide caused by mosquito-borne diseases forced researchers to find ways on how to address this problem. Different methods and strategies were already been implemented and not all of these yielded good results.

This study aims to produce an extract and to determine the effectiveness of Yerba Buena as a natural insect/mosquito repellant which will be very useful to many people and also to have another natural alternatives of insect repellant aside from those synthetic and commercially prepared sold in the market.

Yerba buenaMentha arvensis Linn.MINT, PEPPER MINT

Yerba buena is an aromatic herb of the mint family that is known for its health benefits worldwide.

The researcher aim to conduct a study to find out which insect/mosquito repellant is more effective, the Yerba buena extract as a natural insect repellant or the synthetic, commercially prepared insect repellant sold in the market.

Statement of the Problem:

This study lies to find out the effectiveness of Yerba buena extract as a natural insect/mosquito repellant.

1. Is there a difference on the effect of yerba buena extract and the synthetic, commercially prepared insect/mosquito repellant in terms of:a. Quality c. Effectivity/Effectb. Odor

Hypothesis:

Null Hypothesis:There is no significant difference

between the Yerba buena extract and the commercially prepared insect/mosquito repellants.

Methodology or Procedure:

Materials Ingredients: 30 ml Eucalyptus oil 60 ml Yerba Buena ExtractMethods of Research:

The method of research in this study will be experimental method of research. The purpose is to study the relative effect of the various set up:

Set – Up A: The mixture of the extract of Yerba Buena and Eucalyptus oil.

Set – Up B: Commercially Prepared Insect Repellant

Method of Collecting Data The method of collecting data will be a

comparative survey. It will mainly concerned only on the effect of the commercial insect/mosquito repellant and the Yerba Buena extract on the mosquito. The researcher will conduct experiment on the two used clothing. The first cloth will be treated with commercially prepared repellant and the second one will be treated with Yerba Buena natural insect/mosquito repellant.
