New Cross Walk Welcome to Millstadt our new cross walk at South Jefferson and Madison Streets. Director Patty Evansco has been busy this past year inquiring about the new cross walk in front of the Millstadt Senior Center. Everyone at St Clair County has been helpful in making sure this project is completed. Thank You Very Much St. Clair County.
Summer is definitely here in Millstadt. There are many gardens in and you can see the tops of the tomato plants are stretching their stems toward the sky. We will wait patiently for the crop to come in, but I’m not too sure they will be here by the 4th of July. This month the County Health Inspector stopped by for our semi-
annual inspection. We have in the past always received a perfect score, but unfortunately this time we had 2 points deducted for a score of 98. These docked points were from one for having dumpster lid open and the other from rust spots on the container. I didn’t realize that either one of these was a violation, but I know now. We are certainly going to be sure that lid is down from now on so we can get a 100% next time. I also called Waste Management and asked for a dumpster without rust on it. This week Millstadt lost two well-known and respected citizens, Lou Eckert and Vernon Wickell. Lou was the mother-in-law of our Executive Board member Ray Famula. Vernon used to own the bowling alley at the corner of Jefferson and Washington and was a frequent diner at the Senior Center Please keep all who have lost loved ones this month in your thoughts and prayers. We have been blessed with the generosity of the Schnuck’s bakery. On a regular basis everyone always has a chance to go home with a goody. We are very grateful for this treat! I would like to remind everyone that we will not tolerate racist remarks in the Senior Center. We appreciate your abiding by and respecting this rule. Have A Good Month and Hope To See You All Soon

Millstadt Senior
Center Donations
Last year over $154,000 was spent on providing meals to the Seniors in Millstadt Township and the Smithton area. $154,000 represents over 62% of the overall budget for the Senior Center. In April, 913 meals were served or delivered to seniors in the area. The Millstadt Senior Center is very fortunate to have generous donations from the community and in particular this past year the Senior Center has received $8,796 from the Sandra Bereitschaft Foundation and $4,000 in memorials for Dave Evansco. Currently, $11,086 has been raised to replace the Senior Center’s bus. While we have a long way to go to purchase a new bus, the generosity of the community keeps the door to the Senior Center open. Sandy was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels on program and enjoyed delivering meals in the community. She enjoyed meeting with her clients on her meal route and shared some of her caring qualities they came to love and appreciate. Dave enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He loved Chinese food, pizzas, calling bingo games and his truck. Dave had a special place in the community and the Senior Center. He knew how much the Senior Center met to Patty and how much the seniors enjoy having Patty at the Center. Memorial gifts and bequests are a way to remember friends and family members and ensure the continuation of senior services in Millstadt. Thanks to all who have contributed to the Senior Center with their time, monetary contributions or donations of supply items.
Vehicles Burglarized Early in June a pick-up truck stolen from Moore Asphalt was found nearby with a landscaping block thrown against the windshield. Several other unlocked vehicles parked along W. Van Buren, W. Harrison, East White and in Alpine Meadows had money, wallets and GPS units taken from them. Some of the missing items were found in a storm sewer in Alpine Trails. Always remember to lock your vehicle and keep money and other valuables out of sight.
Spelling Bee Winners
Janet Schilling, nee Sliment of Waterloo edged Chris Curtis of Columbia, to win the Illinois Department of Aging seniors regional Spelling Bee with the word sassafras. Both advance to the State Finals August 12 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Illinois. Schilling, won a local contest at Columbia, Illinois to advance to the Millstadt showdown. The other regional spellers were Al Lawson of Bellleville, Diane Jany of Waterloo, and Pat Meier of Mascoutah. Janet was a secretary at Ralston Purina and upon leaving there she provided home day care in her home. She credits the one room school for her spelling. I learned 8th grade words when in 1st grade. She attended Lepere School.

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.
Your Help in This Matter is Greatly Appreciated

Persons With Disabilities Parking Program This is the second part of questions and answers on the new P e r s o n s w i t h Disabilities parking program. January 1, 2014, is the date the new Persons with Disabilities parking program will t a k e e f f e c t . Recertification of all existing disability placard or license plate holders will receive a letter and certification renewal form in the mail from the Secretary of State, to be completed by the applicant and his/her certifying physician. Question: I just got a renewal notice in the mail for my disability parking placard but it doesn’t expire until 2014. Do I need to get my placard renewed already? Answer: Yes. Changes to the Persons with Disabilities Parking Program begin in January 2014, so you should begin your certification renewal process now in order to get your placard/plates renewed before the new changes to into effect. Question: What will the new placard look like? Answer: The new meter-exempt disability parking placard will be yellow and gray striped. Question: Will individuals who do not meet the new criteria still be eligible for disability plates or parking placards? Answer: Yes. All individuals who meet the existing disability criteria will still qualify for disability plates or a placard, which entitle them to park in accessible parking spaces. However, only those individuals who meet the new disability criteria will receive a new meter-exempt placard.

Have Some Summer Fun And Exercise Too, At The Millstadt Swimming Pool!
I Scream, You Scream! Picnic time is here and many of us still remember ice cream served in cones for just a nickel a scoop. Summer is the perfect time for a scoop of ice cream, root beer float, or maybe a favorite malt flavor. Ice cream is nutritious, a little heavy on the sugar and calories but is otherwise good for you. In 1984 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established
the third Sunday in the month as National Ice Cream Day. Charles E. Minches of St. Louis is credited with inventing the ice cream cone on July 23, 1904 at the St. Louis World’s Fair. He filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone.
Future Performances Millstadt’s own Emily Feazel will be appearing in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes at the Belleville East Performing Arts Center. Performances will be July 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7:30 pm and July 21 and 28 at 2:00 pm. For additional information or to reserve seats, call 618-409-0015.
New Quilters Wanted New quilters are welcome to learn from a group of experienced quilters. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary just a desire to learn and have some fun. Two quilts are set-up in frames on the second floor of the Community Center and one quilt is especially beginner friendly. Quilting experts on hand.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
All Lunches are Catered from the Millstadt IGA Or Aunt Maggie’s from Millstadt
